Fun's fact: The demo of the track used to have one of the most bad-ass James Hetfield's guitar solos (if he did it on the record, it would be mind-blowing)!!!! Kirk Hammett wrote the riff from the intro/choruses

Hey Bryce, the fill in question you are referring to actually isn't very difficult. It just give off the illusion that there's a lot going on. Lars is hitting the snare 12 times consecutively with his right hand and his left hand is intermittently doing two tom hit accents while doing two triplets on the double kick. That probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it's not hard to pull off and it is very similar to a lot of other Lars fills historically

I watched a live version of the song from the year it came out, and he didn't play anything close to the same fill. Then I listened to the song at half speed to figure out what's going on. On paper, there's not much to it: a couple snare hits with two high toms thrown in on the 16th notes. But here's the thing: I never claimed it was impossible, I'm just questioning Lars' abilities. Again, this isn't because I'm trying to hate on him - I love the man for his kindness and what he's brought to the music industry - I'm just saying that there are a variety of reasons why I think this one fill might be manufactured. At this point in his career, he no longer had the second hi-hat on the right side of the kit, which means he'd be leading with his right hand on the hi-hat OVER his left on the snare. Using that left hand, he would have to go from the snare drum to the high tom in the timing of one sixteenth note at 162bpm; but because the hi-hat is playing throughout the fill, he'd also have to hook that left hand UNDER his right arm and upward to the tom, then back down before the next snare hit, which is quite clunky and uncomfortable on his Load kit. The fills like this on justice don't have hi-hat going throughout, so he could hit the first snare with his right hand, then cross OVER with his left hand, and it would be much easier. Obviously, it happens in the recording, so it's definitely possible that he COULD have played it. I'm just saying that his notorious lack of rudiment technique, gradual slowing/aging, and Frankenstein-songwriting methods all lead me to believe that this is an edited fill, not one that was performed.

@@MidnightNotion Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you were hating on him. But as a drummer and massive Metallica fan I think it's pretty common knowledge that Lars does a lot cooler fills on studio albums as he has the time to perfect it and doesn't have to worry about pulling it off live if he goes the easier route. There's a lot of crazier fills on the justice album that he doesn't attempt live. In this instance I believe he has the skill to pull off this fill in the studio at his own pace but yes, he does not even attempt it live

Now if someone could just talk to him about whatever is happening on the live version of "Sad But True"… XD

Glad you like it, one of my faves. About the 3rd arm thing, two options - 1: He could be tapping the foot pedal on the hi-hat. 2: They could have over-dubbed it, and kept the hi-hat on purpouse. Either way, great drum work.

I think the washy sound you’re hearing in the final verse is a very distorted guitar low in the mix. It has a buzzing noise that is barely noticeable

At 13:45 was it a double bass drum fill with the toms? But yeah I hear the high hat faintly I think... lol

20!? PERFECT score? Are you sure you're doing the math right? It's okay if you are, but I guess I'm just surprised that anyone would put "Wasting My Hate" as a perfect score for all 5 categories, placing it in line for best Metallica song.

I love to play this song (although at 1.25 speed) on guitar And it's a shame they didn't leave the awesome solo from the demo But hey, I'm glad they played it live couple months back

What are you gonna do if Metallica releases a new album this year, are you gonna keep doing the search for the greatest Metallica song
@MidnightNotion3 жыл бұрын
Nah, I’ll just review the new songs with the same criteria and add them to the list, wherever they fall.
