Hold the phone, Hold the phone! even though back then most of the stories in games such as Rocket knight adventures had most stories in the manual. There were certain scenes that were taken out from the American version. In the Japanese version it shows from he very start, how the town is in a peaceful time, but then the Pig army attacks. As for the old man that is the king who actually shows up along with Axel after you beat the first stage. Axel Kidnapps the Princess and takes off in a large flying ship and sends Sparkster Flying off the castle. After clearing the second stage the King catches up with you with his cannon to launch Sparkster into the flying ship to save the princess! Honestly have no idea why they changed and took out some of the scenes but were and still are there! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip2nipaOq56sg5I
@retroinspect7 жыл бұрын
All of those scenes are definitely in the American version except the intro. I don't know how Jirard missed them.
@censored10807 жыл бұрын
Actually, only the opening cut scene was changed, all the other cut scenes are exactly the same. There are only two other differences. The title card for each level were changed and the difficulty modes were relabeled to Children, Easy, Normal, and Hard. Originally the levels were labeled Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and CRAZY HARD. Also, the last two difficulties had to be unlocked by completing the game on the previous difficulty.
@Jofe0007 жыл бұрын
It was so weird when he didn't mention the one where the princess gets kidnapped (possumnapped?). I mean, ok the manual paints a(n extremely) larger picture than the game but at least the game's cutscenes show you that you're trying to rescue a princess.
@SoulHero77 жыл бұрын
The other main change from each version I saw was the introductions to each stage. In the American version, every stage starts with just Sparkster in different poses. In the original version you see a live orchestra playing the stage intro music with nice attention to detail like the trumpet members lowering their trumpets when their instruments aren't playing in the background.

My favorite part is at the end where they painstakingly put in Jirard's reflection in the tv screen. 10/10, don't change it
@justanotheryoutubechannel6 жыл бұрын
The Japanese version has a bit more story, it has a very simple cutscene at the start that shows Sparkster’s family and princess peach getting captured by the bad guys, but it was cut out of the Western releases because it was too cute, and they replaced it with the much more advanced intro to the English versions.
@skwiskwig7 жыл бұрын
It was 1994 when I found a copy of this gem marked down to $20 in the discount bin at my small-town Canadian Tire. I immediately picked it up, having recently seen something about the sequel ("Sparkster" ) in a gaming mag. I was 10 years old. This game beat the CRAP out of me ... but here's the thing, I kept going back for more. And more. AND MORE. Until I could finish it at the hardest difficulty and see the full ending (you don't get the cool credits on 'easy' btw). I have a lot of fond gaming memories from that time, but the time I spent with this game in particular was some of my best. The soundtrack ALWAYS blew me away, and to this day if I want to get pumped up I throw on that boss music. One of my favorite boss themes of ALL time. I was so stoked to see you cover this, brought back a lot of happy (and frustrating) memories.

It's good to see that Sparkster is still getting some love all of these years later, I grew up with this game and loved it for a long time till one day it faded from memory like a lot of games do. Today's episode made me get so hype and reminded me of a lot of good child hood memories, I will defiantly be talking to my sister to see if she still has our copy around that way I can load it up and show my Niece and Nephew a great piece of my child hood. One last thing I have to say, it's not unusual for me to watch the Completionist while working on something else here in the office and the skits always get at least a short laugh or a grin but for some reason this episodes skit had me in tears. Keep up the great work! Oh and other retro games to look at would be Sparkster for the snes or Shining force. Shining force isn't super long there are a few secretes and it's a pretty fun game. The only problem I could see you having is that the fights are very similar to Final fantasy tactics and can take quite a while to complete.

I remember one day mum had bought this game for me. I don't remember if it was a reward or just a "I saw this and thought you'd like it" kinda thing, but I remember puttingit in the MEga Drive and starting it up while my older sister read the manual to give me some back story and help me learn how to play. Once I'd got to grips with it, I played it a lot, each time getting a little further. Until I hit level 5. That level scared me as a kid. There were a few games that would brick wall me as a kid with something scary or overly difficult whereby I'd play up to that point and then switch it off. Maybe months later I'd pluck up some courage and try again, but until then I'd get to that point and stop. For me, those indestructable metal pigs that killed you in one hit were scary. And after getting past them, there was an even scarier giant mecha pig chase scene that got my heart going! I remember finally beating that mecha boss and moving onto stage 6 and losing my lives to the boss...the night before we went on holiday for two weeks to Spain. I loved the holiday, but it was agony waiting to go back and try again. Even now level 6 still has a fresh feel to it since level 6 and 7 are my least played levels. It ranks as one of my favourite games ever, not just because by itself it's so good, but also because of the amazing memories attached to it. The 90s was a fantastic period to be a gamer.

It's a great game, in a great series.. save for maybe the 7th generation iteration.. but seriously stop harping on the "made for a younger audience" crap. Even if you're doing it as a joke, it's just not right. Just because a game is "E for Everyone" and has bright and color graphics, doesn't mean the game is only for children. The whole point behind the character's appeal is so that everyone would enjoy the look and aesthetics. The game was literally developed to be fun and challenging and appeal to all ages, not just kids. That was the whole idea of the mascot craze of the 90s was so that all demographics would want to invest in their developed by committee mascot.. some worked, some didn't. Also remember when this came out, most of the console owners were in their early to mid teens. I was 13 at the time, and I never felt it was for "A younger demographic" in fact, I felt like it was meant for me.. and now as an adult, I still feel that way. Castlevania and Contra share the same E to E10 ESRB rating as Rocket Knight and both Sparkster games. Also, just because something is bright, colorful, and cheerful in look.. does not mean it's "For kids." Look no further than Happy Tree Friends if you want proof behind that, that series is definitely bright, colorful and cheerful and completely, and utterly for only an adult audience.

You definitely missed a few cut scenes somehow like when Axel Gear kidnaps the princess right after beating the first boss or when the airship explodes. Interestingly the Japanese version replaces the weird spin around intro with a setup to the pig invasion.But Rocket Knight was really cool because the "story" happens in the background organically. In the first level you see the castle being attacked by the giant spider boss with the airship floating in the distance. When you beat the boss the airship blows you away into the wilderness. When you escape the airship and fly to the pig city you can see the, uh, Death Star in the distance which you then fly into at the end of that segment.

I love your channel man, but i have to say, i straight up skip all the sketch segments with your friends all the time. I don't know i just don't like them i don't find them funny. Not every channel has to have a comedic focus or comedic segmets. Just my honest opinion. PS You are awesome

Diego García Barradas was litteraly about to write the exact same comment. Hes great at reviews, but the sketches feel kinda tacked on to me and i would say he should stick with his strong suits in my opinion
@diegog18537 жыл бұрын
Yeah... the sketches almost never contribute anything to the overall review. He is not expressing his opinion through comedy, he is making a joke about an opinion that he has previously stated. The reviews are excellent though

I never played first one but the second one was my first game i've ever played. The second sparkster is an absolute master piece IMO, the graphics for the time, the mechanics we're so clean and fast, and the music in the first level was god tier.

A few days ago I was remembering a peice of retro level design and trying to place which game it was from. It was like when you are trying to recall a tune... but can't. Anyway, thanks for the memory refresh... I now realise it was this game.

This is a great retro game to review on the show! I ended up with two copies of the game: one my best friend gave me from his childhood that works for a few minutes before resetting itself (like a demo cart or something), and one I found about 8 years ago (with case) for 5 bucks.

Ah yes, Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster, the old days where lives and continues meant something all right, where failure sends you back to the beginning and made sure that you remember that. This game was among the many slew of games where it pulled no punches, didn't dull it down and you had to WORK for results. Learn from the mistakes, and push your limits to reach success! This game didn't baby it down for the kids and inexperienced players, but still brings a challenge to veteran and advanced players, you had to learn it all, each mistake you had to learn from, the controls you have to master, it's a heck of a game. It wouldn't be surprising if it had a arcade port during the time. This game is CHALLENGING. There's even a difficulty setting where everything kills you in one blow! Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster is one of the many gaming gems of it's time and still holds up to today! Nya! This was a awesome jetpackin' possum!

I still own a physical copy of this game. When my brother and I first played it, I remember being surprised at how good it actually was. We only bought it because we needed games for our Genesis (Which we bought around the Gamecube era) and we thought this one looked like it might be cool, so we tried it.

This was the game I was never sure was worth a rental from blockbuster so I didn't want to waste my allowance. I had a neighbor who had it, I got to play like 5 minutes. I'm so glad you made this so I can now see it.

I had quite a history with this game. I was determined to beat it as a kid so much to the point that I'd play the levels over and over long enough til I had the timing on everything memorized. It was seriously a glorious gaming triumph when I finally beat it. I beat it on every difficulty except Hard (I could only get to level 4). Damn I loved this game though

This was a great episode! It really was a breath of fresh air and it really shows in this review, that it probably was for you as well. It' s up there with my favourite Completionist episodes.

It looks like it has some Kirby-esque aesthetics and ideas, while throwing in some of the visual design, character design, and level design ideas of Gunstar Heroes. It's all combined with Mega Man level difficulty. It looks really cool!

This is one of my favorite genesis games and the song you played in the beginning is one of my favorites. This was my alternative to sonic when I was a kid once I had played Sonic 1, 2, 3 and knuckles to death.

loved this game as a kid, tried to track it down again, but the price was just not where I wanted it to be, and a loose Sega version at a con, was even still to high. Your podcast with Pat was great, it led me here. Glad you shared the message and importance of health and wellness

I remember picking this game up on clearance for something like $12 during the heyday of the Genesis (usually the price of garbage games, but the cover looked neat). I had a blast with this. I had as much fun playing it as I did the Sonic games of the era.

If you want to complete a Rocket Knight game worth of being completed, get the 2010 reboot edition (PC/Xbox 360/PS3). It is heavily underrated for what it is, the story this time makes more sense while still without any words spoken, you have all the skills from the original game including some extra like charged attacks, hard mode is actually hard with more enemy placements and not artificial with one hit k.o. (even in gold Sparkster mode you still have like 5 health or something). Definitely one of the better platformers I've played during that time and still holds up today.

I freakin love this game. I was never able to beat Sonic 2 as a kid, but this game I was able to beat pretty regularly. It really is a shame that it never became the franchise it deserved to be. I think it's in part because the sequels weren't as good. There are things to enjoy about them, but the other games just didn't have the vibrant energy the original did. I'm glad to see this game getting more love here. Both Jirard and Movie Bob have talked about it, and that just makes life so much brighter.

- Says this game is similar to a cartoon that came out in 1993 on those "other" channels (presumably cable). - Shows an anime that came out in 1994 in Japan and 2002 in the US. - Also shows an anime that aired in 1996 in the US, though at least it actually aired earlier in Japan and Canada. - Makes reference to mature anime airing on cable channels when most of them (such as DBZ or Sailor Moon or Ronin Warriors) not only aired in syndication for years but also didn't air until around 1995.

I actually played the sequel "Sparkster, rocket knight adventures" before i got to play this one. And I think is actually a more refined game and the harder difficulties actually bring new levels that you skip during easier ones. Definetly a great game that you should also play

I played this game to death when I was a kid. I can remember there being Normal, Hard, Very Hard and Crazy Hard, the last of which is exactly what you mentioned in the video. I had to play through the game 3 times to get the last difficulty. Couldn't beat the first level. Not planning to, especially now I've seen your video. Great work!
