I have used a magnetic tank bag on my previous motorcycle. I put on a $ 12 paint protector film from 3M on the tank prior to putting the bag on. I removed the film when I sold the bike after 7 months. The paint underneath was pristine. The film had a brown coloration where the magnets were touching. I think it's because the bag moves around slightly and that over a period of time caused the discoloration. Since I had he film on, only it got damaged, that's all. I guess it can happen to any bike's paint. I now have a R3. I will not use a tank bag on it. Bought the panniers instead.

sorry to hear i've never used a tank bag how is the bike otherwise ? how are the panniers ? hope the dealer helps you! did you need your brakes bled ?

Check out our 6329 Rocket Review. The panniers are terrible. One just split apart at the zipper here on a Florida trip. The left front side marker also fell off the fork this morning. Just a cheap adhesive strip behind it, not water resistant. Yes, our brakes were bleed under recall last year. I contacted Jacksonville Triumph tonight, won’t know till tomorrow if I can bring it there. If I can it’s a 500 mile round trip from where I am at in Florida. The tank bag magnets leave paint welts. They used a cheap paint process. The GIVI panniers are pathetic with jamming zippers and plastic locks that reset themselves. As we sit here on a motorcycle trip knocked down to only one pannier. The panniers are to small, and are basically cheap plastic in the areas were it matters.

Putting a magnet on any paint job just doesn’t seem like a good idea.

@@OnDownTheRoadProductions that doesn’t make it a good idea to use them. Especially considering you could be moving it with your knees, or wind pressure making slight rubbing.

Maybe a crappy tank bag, my paint is fine!!

One tank bag is the Triumph Official Rocket 3 GT bag. The other is also very high quality. At this point, we have polished out the blemishes.

Tank bags are not a good idea on any bike. The bags move slightly, put a paint protection film on the tank before you fit them and you wont have an issue if you really must fit a tank bag. Personally l wouldn't ever fit one of these things on my tank. Other options are available to carry stuff. And also the is no evidence that triumph have painted the bikes with a water based paint or sub standard paint. My advice dont put anything on your tank.

Thanks for your perspective. Triumph does offer a tank bag for the Rocket 3 (we have). Across owning many motorcycles, this is the first one for blemishes caused by tank magnets. I was just in the garage polishing them out. Our Best, ODTRP
