Can a Freestyler Beat the Best TAS Hacker in Rocket League HORSE?

This is Rocket League HORSE, with a twist. In this video I had a Freestyler face off against a Tool Assisted Shot Maker in a race to see who can complete a variety of different freestyle shots first. TAS allows a player to control their car in slow motion, save progress, and then go back and repeat sections as needed. Meaning a Tool Assisted Freestyler can slowly build a complicated shot over time, working on each part until it is mastered before moving on to the next. Meanwhile a regular freestyler has to do the whole shot, at regular game speed. And if they mess up? They have to start back at the beginning. It may seem like an unfair challenge, but with this video I found the perfect way to have these two types of Rocket League players compete in a race to complete flip resets, musty double taps, ground pinches, psychos, and a whole lot more.

That was something I spent the last month or so trying to figure out. It still wasnt a "fair" challenge but I think I came up with a way that made it work and gave both players a chance to show off their skills. Glad you enjoyed it!

Honestly, I think this was fair because it gave the freestyler the advantage that all of the shots are stuff he can hit and that if he hits it in the first couple tries he'll be quicker; however, it also gives the tas fella time to have set the shot up from 0 and worked through it. And because of how tas works, he had the disadvantage that it'd take him longer to set up even the simplest shots simply as a result of slow-mo and checkpoints. Idk, but imo for comparing two vastly different types of players, this seems like it was a pretty fair setup

The TAS plugin seems like it could be crazy good to practice individual mechanics. Just resetting right into the position where youre missing muscle memory. I could probably really use this to get the flip right after my first reset to get more consistent at landing 2 resets. Or maybe just learning to do a consistent musty

@@dahuday That would be wrong cause 1. you would still need to do the full setup again. Which is the entire thing you would wanna skip. If you have infinite skips whats the point of the double reset? Like I feel like that wouldnt help with acquiring a reset only using the reset afterwards

That is a good point and probably would have balanced that shot a little better. But it would have been overly complicated try and have different requirements for each shot depending on if it was TAS or not. And in the end I just decided to accept that fact that some of these weren't really fair.

The main advantage of TAS in a live battle is just speeding up the setup and getting to your checkpoint almost instantly, especially if it's a very long shot. You can do like 4 attempts while the other guy would still be in his second attempt. Don't know if this is fair..

My biggest problem with freestyling nowdays is that the player have gotten way too good at recovering bothed setups. That's why I like when you call out the exact shot before hand so you can air dribble recover the shot into something completely different and still make it look like I did whot you tried to do.

@@roseflows6585 I just personally think being able to call out your shot beforehand is more impressive. I think freestyiling is just adding some "unnecessary" flair to a shot so planned shots are freestyles and so are recoveries. It's just a matter of preference which you prefer.

One thing I always think is weird (as someone who is in the TAS community) is calling stuff that isn’t speedrunning TAS it would make more sense to call it TAF (Tool-Assisted Freestyling) or TA… for other games. Just my thoughts. Good video tho!

The term I'm trying to encourage for these is "Tool Assisted Shot" which lets us maintain the TAS designation. TAF is another way to describe it though too.

Yes, and I also know how to to write youtube titles too. ;) Not to mention how cool that thumbnail looks. Regardless, TAS is often called "cheating', so "hacking" is not that much a stretch especially when putting a TAS maker against someone playing normally. If a player can pause and rewind the game due to programmed exploits I think I'm safe to call him a "hacker" in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. The only people that might care are the ones taking this a little too seriously.

Unlikely. There's very few people that know how to do this and care about spending the time. And when they do put in the effort they don't make some regular freestyle shot, it's something that's very obviously TAS. There's not much point in using TAS to fake a FS shot as you still have to be able to *do* the mechanic to actually make it work. Also I think it helps that you require a PC. That eliminates 90% of the community from even having access to these tools.

@@othorl I think you didn't watch that video. The title is meant to be controversial and based on real tweets by freestylers *claiming* they were getting banned for freestyling. In reality they were getting banned for smurfing, and (surprise?) I am against smurfs (hence the "good"). So nothing hypocritical here at all. A lot of their comments highlighted in that video *were* hypocritical though, so I recommend watching if you want a good laugh.

@othorl I know what it isn't. And so does Rocket League's Terms of Service. So yes it was good that freestylers got banned for purposefully keeping their rank low to clip on new players. And since I don't make content that involves smurfing freestylers, nothing I'm doing here is "hypocritical" and I expect to continue to work with freestylers in the future. If any freestyler doesn't agree with my stance they are free to turn down my invitations, that has yet to be an issue though.

I've supported TAS since day 1. Partly because it's a unique way to show off what the is technically possible in the game. But mostly it's just entertainment. Thus TAS is featured in the content of many other games besides RL. Personally, I consider it no different than the Rocket League Air Show Sequences, Custom AI, or even all the modded content you see in RL videos. That being said, I understand not everyone is interested or entertained by it.
