I enjoyed your honesty about failing to plan, it reminds me of how I sometimes do things... Myself I intend to use 3/4 or 1/2" PINs on the sides to the uprights so I can easily PIN and Unpin the 2 x 12's for loading with a lower wall on one side. Thank you for the honesty and a few smirks.

Just a thought, you may want to reverse your bolts around so you don't have them sticking out where you might smack your face on one or snag them. I know when we did our sides (flatbed trailer 18ft) that we initially had the bolts sticking out and after both dad and I snagged clothes (coats) on those bolts and ripped them, we reversed them so the smooth bolt head stuck out.

So, couple things. I have done this to my 16ft Lamar dump trailer, but only went 1 2x12 rough sawn oak plank. The primary reason i did this is because my Kubota B3350 (a very similarly sized tractor to your 2038) could not effectively dump over the side of the trailer with the sides any higher, something i suggest you check. Second, i used my tractor to lift the heavy beams, had screws started roughly where i wanted my bolts, screwed the ends in temporarily for speed, then went back drilled my holes and galvanized bolted everything. While i have a 2x12 on the side i went with a rough sawn oak 2x6 in the front partially for the tarp but more importantly so i could see out the back.

For easy removal one option is to make the vertical 2x4s a tiny bit more narrow and a tiny bit less thick, use a thickness planer. Because that would introduce some slop, which makes removal easy, you could drill holes in the vertical metal mounting sleeves then use threaded inserts in the 2x4s and then bolt it on each time to firmly secure it to the trailer.

thanks for the video. i think after seeing how heavy it is with the 2x lumber i might use decking so it is only an inch or 3/4 of an inch thick. not as heavy so i can lift it out on my own and still strong enough to hold branches, mulch etc piled up. i would not fill up gravel that high anyway since it would exceed the weight limit of the trailer.

Maybe consider creating some brackets or slots for your forks to help install and remove. Once you get it started out of the pockets, you could lift from the bottom of the rails. May want to add some steel to the bottom to keep the wood from getting chewed up by the forks when lifting out.

I watched the video and wondered why you went solid boards? If you are going to haul brush you could have used 3 or 4 2X4 and left space between them, it should have been lighter. If you are hauling trash I get that, my idea would have to use plywood instead. Since you want hooks going with 2X12 might have been your best option. Since they are so heavy now you could put hooks or something along the top of the boards so you can use you tractor to lift them out carefully. Thank you and have a great day.

Will you be able to dump your loader over 2 boards? I just went with one board on my trailer for that reason. The original boards were splintered badly after 10 years of abuse, so I put new southern yellow pine boards on this time. I have them bolted in solid so they are very sturdy but non removable. My current tractor can clear the side boards by a few inches with the bucket fully tilted down. I found that if the boards were any taller it made it very difficult to dump firewood chunks out of the bucket.

I think I would not consider putting anything across the front side. You aren't going to be putting anything heavy in there that requires the extra height from the rails (gravel or soil), and the tarp/screen would be able to hold the rest in right? Kind of acting like the front board in a sense. I'm assuming a light material like wood mulch, leaves, etc...something you could really pile in there, the side rails and wind screen should be perfect for those types of loads.
