I am ashamed to admit I have not watched one of your videos in quite awhile, for that I do apologize. I liked one of your early videos, do not remember which one now but in reading the comments I saw Jared's. I am also a follower of his channel, have been for a time now. In that early video I had been reading the comments and I saw Jared's, thought he was rather rough on you! He was right though, a little on the sharp side but that is Jared. He is a reader, a lover of books and generally knows his rocks. It really surprised me to see this video, in a good way. I am happy to see this as I like both channels. I need to get caught up on both channels too, especially your astrophotography. Astronomy was an early love of mine. Good video, thank you.

The triangular shapes may be a fill material in the interstitial space between spheres. That is, the space where 3 spheres come together. The way that spheres stack, if they were free to move around, will produce a roughly triangular void.
@adventuresofshadowdog4 ай бұрын
That’s something to think about! I had to read your comment three times and then I was able to imagine what you are describing. Once I could see it in my mind, it makes perfect sense. Have you encountered this shaped agate or other rock formation before? Thanks for the excellent comment!
@charleslupica4 ай бұрын
@@adventuresofshadowdog no, but my university studies included crystal and molecular structures. The tightest packing of crystal structure is called , “hexagonal close packed”. This packing should result in a roughly triangular shape. One of the specimens you showed looked like it had a curved surface, rather than a flat surface. Btw: sorry if my explanation wasn’t clearer.

It really was a very special day. I live in St. George, UT. The site we were at is just about a 30 minute drive North. On the day we shot this video, I was shooting with a new DJI Osmo 4 and DJI mic that comes with it. I’ve since shot another video with it and had the mic properly paired and I’m super happy with both so far. Previously I was using a GoPro Hero 10 which I also liked a lot. But the new DJI Osmo 4 has a much bigger sensor and is far better in low light. I shoot a lot in low light as I do astrophotography too. The GoPro, which is super in so many ways, is not good in low light. I think I’m rambling beyond your original question, but I hope this helps. Do you ever get this way?

To be honest, it is a steep and challenging hike to the top with a lot of loose rock. However, you can find smaller pieces lower down. But even getting to the lower areas requires some walking and hiking for a ways. Another area that is much easier to access is just outside Central, UT. The agate there is bluish, but a bit more difficult to find. I did a video on that spot too. Here is a link to it if you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6PJaZqFe8eigJosi=o364wnF0l2-LaP60

The agates found at this location are definitely formed within volcanic rock. There is an area further North called Brian Head where the agate formed within sedimentary layers and the tectonic forces of the earth which pushed up and folds rock layers created the heat and pressure necessary. So you’re not wrong in the sense that some agates are formed as you described. Just not here. Hope this helps and great comment!
