Lance, you found some nice specimens! I was concerned about you running into Gypsum! And refreshed my memory by looking it up. Gypsum can irritate your skin and precaution should be taken not to breathe the dust! So glad it wasn’t Gypsum and Shadow was not there. Love your New Toy. You’ll be able to see and share so many details!

That’s good to know about Gypsum. I have gathered Selenite, the crystallized translucent form of gypsum, from Warren Valley and didn’t have any irritation. But I also didn’t know to take precautions. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. And as always, it’s great to hear from you! 😎

This is how I identify the differences between all of them. But I am also caring less over time what to call it. It's all Silica. Great video, looked like a fun area to rockhound! Chert/Flint = Opaque, minimal impurities, more muted colors (black, gray, brown, green ect), typically no bands Chalcedony = Translucent, minimal impurities or inclusions, minimal number of colors or lacks color, typically no bands Jasper = Opaque, impurities and inclusions, more colorful, can have bands Agate = Translucent, impurities, more colorful, typically has banding Then you have the rocks where they are mixed with the different types aka jasperagate or what ever you want to call it :)

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. When I first read your comment I only saw the first paragraph. I left a simple “”Thank You” reply. Then after posting I saw the following paragraphs. So I went back and edited my reply. I really appreciate you taking the time to write out in such detail how you identify them. It’s super helpful and I’m sure others will find it helpful too. I do agree as well that in the end it’s all Silica. Beautiful Silica! 😎

@ You bet! It can be kind of hard to break it all down with what the differences are, and also I think there is too much emphasis on what to call rocks and the big picture is often confused and muddied. I have no issue with people calling it all agate, that term can be interchangeable with silica imo. Doesn't really matter. Basically, it's all Silica with the differences mainly being what other elements are intruding as it forms which is what makes the different colors, bands and patterns that creates the uniqueness you find with all of it! The variety really seems to be endless which is what makes it such a cool material!

Bentonite is used for kitty litter because it’s super absorbent. Absolutely terrible stuff to step in when it’s raining though. I believe they use it to lubricate oil drills too. Myron Cook does a cool video on it.

Can we do the same thing with muriatic acid?
@adventuresofshadowdog
@adventuresofshadowdog 3 күн бұрын
I honestly do not know. I took a geology class in college and we used hydrochloride acid. Since then, that’s all I’ve used. I’m just guessing here, but I think hydrochloride acid is stronger than muriatic acid. You can buy small bottles of hydrochloride acid online. It is a very strong acid. Watch “Breaking Bad” and you’ll see what I mean. 😂 I hope this helps.

At 18:43 your Jasper example is unquestionably an agate and pretty much anybody who knows agates will tell you that. That kind of banding does not occur in Jasper's and yeah agates can be opaque if they have enough stuff in them, although even when "opaque" you can usually see a little way into them as you can with your agate.

We used limestone (ground to a powder) in the production of cattle feed in the plant that I managed for 30 years. It is a very inexpensive source of calcium. We were able to successfully suspend it (which took a couple of years and 100’s of test batches) that I played a significant role in. Cattle like acidic so I know what happens when the ph is too low for limestone. We had some real fiascos. I also learned that phosphoric acid is more reactive when diluted somewhat with water. Don’t know if that is true with hydrochloric acid but probably is. Really enjoyed you taking us through your testing process. Very interesting stuff.

Calcium carbonate will react more readily with hydrochloric acid (HCl) mixed with water, meaning a diluted solution, compared to straight, concentrated HCl gas because the water allows for better dissociation of the HCl molecules into hydrogen ions (H+) which are the key reactive species in the reaction with calcium carbonate. Explanation: Dissolution in water: When HCl is mixed with water, it readily dissociates into H+ and Cl- ions, increasing the availability of hydrogen ions to react with the carbonate ions (CO3^2-) in calcium carbonate. Note of caution::: if mixing HCL with water, always add the acid to the water not the water to the acid. Spattering could occur so make sure you use the proper PPE. Also this process is an exothermic reaction which means it will generate heat.

Hello Wes! I too have loved rocks since childhood. In my case, it was instilled in me by my father who collected rocks from all around USA. His job had him driving the country and he often returned with a trunk full of rocks. He is an artist and he used the rocks all throughout the yard and even inside the home in the most creative ways. He is 90 now and still lives in that home surrounded by his amazing collection. Thank You so much for sharing your story. And it’s always nice to read a comment from the Motherland! ❤️UK!

@adventuresofshadowdog
@adventuresofshadowdog 3 күн бұрын
I have always used Lortone. They changed ownership recently and I don’t know if the product line is still the same. Assuming it is, the quality and service has always been good for me. So as to sizes: I have one 2-barrel tumbler and the barrels are 3lb each. Then I have two 4lb tumblers. And finally I have one 12lb tumbler. And they’re all going full time! lol. If I could only have one, I would go with the 2 barrel tumbler with the 3lb barrels. The barrels are smaller and you can only tumble rocks up yo about 1.5” in diameter. But because it’s small they turn faster and the rocks are finished quicker. I also prefer to tumble smaller rocks. And I can have two batches going at once. I hope this helps!

I sure don’t want to steer you wrong. My thoughts are that if you can make it to the Tuscon show, you don’t need to go to the Quartzite show. Which show is closest to you? Also, when I was at Quartzite, there were more vendors than now. The Desert Gardens show is still open, but the Pow Wow show has since closed. So I think you’ll find more vendors now in Tuscon. Double check me so that I don’t steer you wrong. But that’s my understanding. I hope this helps.
