I was under the impression that the ceramic cylinders you can buy for tumbling are much harder than these tiles? The tiles i have used in the bathroom are made of some form of clay (the brown part) with a hardened top layer (the white part). I thought the ceramic cylinders were fully made out of this hard (white) top layer found on tiles? How often can you reuse this diy ceramic media? And is it suitable for polishing the last stage with aluminium oxide?

This is a great tip! I have a whole box of ceramic tiles and an empty tumbler at the moment... I think I know what to do with it!

💯! One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that you don't need to use grit. You can just run it for a week with water. Just need the edges slightly rounded starting off. As you use the batch it will get more and more rounded.

Great idea! I did something similar...a few mismatched thrift store ceramics (plates, coffee mug). $4 and I have tons of media now 😁

Did you use grit and water in the tumbler?
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 3 жыл бұрын
I used a bit of grit and water in this batch. But I've done it without and had the same results. It just takes a little longer to get the rounded edges if you don't use grit.

What is ceramic media? I have never heard of it before.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 2 жыл бұрын
Its used to help in the late stage polishing during tumbling. It helps get into the small tight spaces in the rocks. Also acts as a filler for the barrel

Honestly they only need about a week and they are rounded. You don;t even need to use grit. Just natural tumbling action.

Jason, so my dumb question is, why this as opposed to just using waste rocks from a gravel pit, back-alley, etc. And, are these intended only for stage one of tumbling?
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 3 жыл бұрын
You can use gravel but you want to make sure its hard material and all of the same hardness. You don't want softer rocks included or they will just tumble away to nothing. The good thing about ceramics, porcelain etc. is that they are very hard which is why they are good for tumbling media with harder stones. I use a vibratory tumbler for my medium grit and polishing stages and use the ceramic media in all stages. I just carry the same batch of media through with the rocks in all stages.
