These videos are bonus content related to the December 2013 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store:store.guitarworld.com/products...
This month, I'd like to point out some relevant differences between the studio environment, where specific guitar parts are often meticulously crafted and arranged, and live performance, where they sometimes evolve, either out of necessity or as a result of ongoing inspiration, into something quite different that just feels or works better onstage, in front of an audience.
As an example, I'll demonstrate how I've adapted some of the guitar parts I recorded with Rascal Flatts for our 2006 hit cover of the ballad "What Hurts the Most" (Me and My Gang) to render a stirring live arrangement of this song.
The rhythm guitar tracks on the recording-an acoustic doubled by a clean electric, panned right and left-were performed as if the song were in the key of E minor and with a capo at the second fret, which raises everything a whole step. The guitars, however, were tuned down a half step, so the song sounds in F minor, only a half step above concert pitch, and not a whole step higher (in F# minor), which would be the case in standard tuning.

You can tell Joe's playing is very much rooted in rock. Rascal Flatts has always stood out to me. They're not a typical country group. Really, there just a rock band with some banjos, piano, mandolins, and lap steels in there music.

Why did you copy someone else's comment word for word? 🤔😂 The first sentence of your comment is a little copy and paste of a comment on this thread right about yours that was left 6 years before you commented. The "it's amazing how playing over the chord changes makes things sound so close". So gross when people blatantly copy people

Oh you copied more than one comment and just added them together 😂 Wow. You just looked at comments in the comment section and repeated a few things other people said. Even the thing you said with the ❤️ emoji is someone else's comment exactly. With the heart and all. Wow 😂😂

I think Joe Don is a good man and makes Keith Urban. I have met Keith Urban around 2008 in person and he was one of the meanest people I have ever met along with Nicole Kidman. He was very mean to me, a pizza delivery driver and another guard when I was working security in his neighborhood. He was yelling at me and didn't want me to go to the restroom and I was hurting for hours. The pizza delivery guy had every right to deliver a pizza but Keith and Nicole were really yelling at him to let them first through gate, so the delivery driver got scared and litterly missed hitting their limo by less than one inch at a high speed to get out of his way. He kept calling and hanging up several times. This was late at night past the closing time for the delivery company and I had no way to go to the restroom except to hurry to the next guard entrance done the road and close by. I saw on the CCTVs the delivery driver, so I rushed, putting wear and tear at my expense, over there and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban came sometime as I was flying over there without ever going to the restroom and they were very mad that I would even think to go to the restroom. The limo driver left after dropping them off saying that I should worship them and that they could have my job like nothing to them. Keith Urban called for hours yelling in rage at the other officer and kept hanging up. I heard he was a serious drug addict at that time. I think Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban should apologize to me because I haven't forgotten this after all these years, and I'm sure all involved never forgot about it. I also am on the spectrum, and that is not a way to treat someone on the spectrum. Also, this wasn't too long after I was hit by a careless driver and paralyzed (and several other injuries in which it is a miracle I survived) but I kept on kicking and have made an almost full recovery, bit need to see a chiropractor for the rest of my life.

Can someone please explain why he calls the two chords (Cm7 and Bbm7, I think..?) played from 1:42-1:45 the 3 minor and 2 minor? C and Bb are the v and iv in Fm, no? I am new to music theory and only just begun to understand the major scale, which is why I'm a bit lost here!

At the beginning of the video you can read "guitar tuned down one half step" so it's E flat (D#) A flat (G#) D flat (C#) G flat (F#) B flat (A#) E flat (D#) :)
