I thought the breech is defined at the opening at the rear end of the chamber? Wouldn't this still be loading from the front of the chamber, like a cap and ball revolver?

Amazing collection! I can't imagine why muzzle loaders continued to be produced. Must have been cost.

A nifty aside to this is the south used a lot of these early in the civil war. A bunch of them were found down south. Thousands in little rock arsenal. They armed the Arkansas troops for a bit.
