yeah it's nice to think about,maybe your family and friends up there somehow know when it's your time to join them and come to welcome you and do they have some knnd of welcome party or whatever you want to call it. i'm picturing them dying at an old age since he mentions the passage of time in that last verse.

I got a little emotional there when Merle said he would be seeing Diana tonight. If I remember, Merle announced that he would die on his birthday - and he did. He said he wanted to go see his dad. I believe, near the end of his life, he spent most of his time in his bus.

Merle had a vocal gift no doubt. Merle had the added advantage of being a quite prolific GOOD writer as well. The longevity has to have a foundation of songs that resonate with the common man i think?
