One of my favorite songs he wrote was " Sunday Morning Coming Down " and with Johnny Cash's voice singing it was a perfect combination

Great request Penny and great reaction Don. Anita Carter also did a _great_ beautiful live version of this song. Introduced by Johnny Cash on his show. Anita Carter - Lovin' Him Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again (1972)

This song was quoted by Charlie Pride (I think) in the Ken Burns country music doc as an example of the absolute pinnacle of country music songwriting.

Love the song, and have long loved Kris Kristofferson's voice and phrasing. Doesn't seem to matter what he sings, I'm always entranced. And, what an incredible lyricist!

Thank you, Penny. I really enjoyed this. There was a time when I thought Kris couldn't sing, but his songs just aren't the same when done by someone else. I also love "Sunday Morning Coming Down." Kris is also special because he shares a birthday with my husband.

Kris singing his songs has more emotion than someone covering itIMO

I completely agree. It's because what he's really doing is writing poetry, and there's a rhythm to the lines and a pattern even to the spaces between words that most singers don't realise is supposed to be there.

Have loved this song from the first time I ever heard it. The Highwaymen did it in the 90s and Willie Nelson sang lead. I've been lucky enough to have seen the Highwaymen live once and Kris 4 times.

I have been a Kris Kristofferson fan for 50 years. I was a senior in High School when I bought my first Kris Kristofferson album, using my tried-and-true teenaged girl method of picking music. He looked so hot and beautiful on the cover, and if the singer was drool worthy that was all I needed. I took it to my best friend's house and listened to it with her and she was unimpressed with his music and his looks. But I was hooked. I loved his rough gravelly voice, his beard, and how his lyrics painted pictures in my mind. This song was on the album and ended up being one of my favorites, although I don't recall there being a single song on it that I would skip. Even today when I hear this song it makes me long to love someone enough to make them think the thoughts of me that he expressed in that song. I hoped someday to find a man who I could love enough that my eyes would heal and calm him, and the touch of my fingers would wipe away his pain and regrets. Long story short, I guess I just wasn't that kind of woman for anyone I met. But even now, hearing that song makes me feel that a love like that is possible for someone, somewhere. Life is good though. I have two daughters, 6 grandchildren. I'm 68 years old, I am living with my youngest daughter and her 5 kids, and I am healthy, active, the terror of the local senior center. On Tuesday mornings I take my fiddle to the jam session and jam with my peeps and have even sung this song a few times. And on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 I go to the center to country/western dance and flirt with the old farts.

This is one of the most well written songs of our time and Kris was on par with any of the great songwriters in history. Pure genius. I know because i am a songwriter myself.

Song is a 9.7 or better every day. Kris was/is one of the best songwriters of all time. Love his writing. That said. I never thought Kris did most of his songs justice. He just doesnt have the voice or range to capture the potential of the song. I usually prefere the writer singing their songs. Many times others take it somewhere else. Tompall and the Glaser brothers did on this one. Waylon, Roger Miller, all did the song a little better. IMHO. Still, i loved this.

No, he's not dying physically. His studied poetry before his wrote songs. He is one of the best songwriters of my - the boomer - era. The other one is Paul Simon.
