The thing I love most about this movie is the "I'm not good enough" scene. It just hits SO HARD, because its _so accurate. I especially like Anxiety's reaction to hearing it. She's not happy about it, you can see a clear shift in her expression. Anxiety hears this and is _devastated,_ because despite being the one responsible for it, that wasn't her intention. She shows genuine concern, which is a perfect representation of real life anxiety. Anxiety doesn't exist to hurt you, its _supposed_ to protect you... But when taken to the extreme it causes harm instead. I like that this movie acknowledges this. It doesn't paint Anxiety as a _evil,_ it paints it as flawed but with good intentions.

I really liked the interactions between Joy and Anger here. In the first movie Anger wasn’t very developed because this emotion in children is often more similar to rage (temper tantrums), meaning it’s volatile and chaotic, how many kids have you seen get madder and madder after being denied something? It serves its purpose of communicating discomfort, but its excess makes it ineffective, you learn later that you can’t get what you want by stomping your feet. He did however do most of the thought processing and planning in the third act because Anger, along with Fear, is a very powerful and driving emotion. So when channeled into positivity, it creates what’s known as the _fighting spirit_ or _eagerness_ . Joy alone wouldn’t have been enough to push through the literal internal turmoil in Riley’s head, she needed Anger’s motivating power. 10\10 movie.

That panic attack scene made me tear up in the movie theater. I know all too well what that feels like. Back when I was a truck driver, I was making a delivery to a Family Dollar store and the owner of the dry cleaners next door got mad at me for parking near his store. I told him that I didn't have a choice because that's where I have to be to make the delivery. Out of spite, he parked his car in front of the truck to box me in. When I asked him to move, he laughed. I then threatened to call the cops, but he said he would lie and say that I scratched up his car. At that point, I sat in the driver's seat of the truck and just shut down. I had been having nothing but bad luck since I started being a truck driver and that was the last straw. I remember not feeling like I had the mental capacity to process what was going on. I was just frozen. I tried calling my parents, but I was crying so much, I couldn't even get a coherent sentence out. Needless to say, I'm not a truck driver anymore. Too stressful.

Despite not doing much, I feel like Embarrassment is one of the better ones of the new emotions next to Anxiety, because from a storytelling perspective, and much like Wall-E, he's what's called a Mute Character. Which is usually a character--animal, person, etc.--who is either unable or is unwilling to talk to others, and heavily emphasizes on one of the most important rules in creating stories: SHOW, don't TELL. A lot of people have been surprised at how this sequel outgrossed toy story and incredibles sequels despite those being more significant franchises. I think it makes a ton of sense. The idea of people struggling with anxiety and "being more broken then they seem on the outside" is so common as to be nearly universal, the majority of people probably experienced this at some point. Seeing it depicted in the straightforward way with little emotion characters is probably very cathartic to a lot of people in ways they won't want to admit. This film therefore also probably did a lot of good, even more so than the first one, with its message. And it's a clever message: for me it boils down as, to overcome anxiety, don't shut out the bad memories, but make them part of your self-perceived identity, acknowledge your shortcomings, and have a correct sense of who you are as a whole, both good and bad. Focusing only on the good leads to delusion and carelessness, focusing only on the bad leads to self doubt and excessive anxiety, but this is not a dichotomy. They can combine in the same way emotions combined in the first film! beautiful! Look I'm always perplexed when people say Inside Out lacks depth because its too focused on personified emotions. It has more stuff on the surface than a movie like Soul but it absolutely also has depth lol

25:13 Since Riley has had to leave behind friends before, like her old former bestie Meg in Minnesota, it reopens that trauma of having to start all over again - especially given that it’s implied Riley lost touch with Meg in the 2 years following her move to San Francisco, since Meg isn’t mentioned once in the sequel.

In my opinion, thought it’s not perfect this is one of the few times where I think the sequel far outranks it’s namesake. I actually don’t like Inside Out much at all, but this really took the good aspects of that movie and magnified them. The way this handles the concept of anxiety and self-doubt is better than most examples I’ve seen elsewhere. I personally learned how to handle my own anxiousness better because of watching this film, as in telling it “you don’t get to choose who I am,” while at the same time understanding that even anxiety or embarrassment have their place in the psyche, and actually can be good if handled correctly. This movie did a great job.
@usnatv2007Ай бұрын
What was wrong with the first movie in your opinion?
@wespauls9020Ай бұрын
@@usnatv2007 For me it was very topical and not special. Objectively I can't say it's a bad movie, but the way it's been praised as so original and such a smart take on emotions and how the brain works has always annoyed me. Inside Out's concept is not original, characterizing emotions has been done plenty of times already. It’s a very average Pixar movie. The emotional climax for each movie seemed leagues apart, like Bing Bong disappearing with his moon line vs. Riley on the verge of an anxiety attack and fighting all her self-doubt are eons away. Again it’s very topical for me, a Disney side-character disappearing compared to an un-ignorable visual representation of anxiety crippling every part of a person, they just aren’t equal at all. That and the humor for me was very lame and unimpressive and I feel that the humor for this sequel matured in the way that Riley's character has. The jokes seem more well-written and quicker, the first movie it felt like they were trying too hard at some points. Again it’s just my personal opinion, and that’s not to say I hate Inside Out or something. And that't not to say this movie is perfect by any means. But this seems like the rare case where the sequel outclasses it’s namesake instead of just rehashing it or not adding to it.

@@usnatv2007 So I haven't seen all of them, but when I Googled this topic some answers that came up are The Brood, Fight Club, The Nutty Professor, Colossal 2016, among others. Keep in mind these aren't necessarily "every character is specifically a human emotion," but might be a personification of different aspects of a personality or something similar but still fall into this category. Two examples I can think of are a tv show Herman's Head which is basically Inside Out as a bad sitcom (exact same premise,) and and episode of Fairly Odd Parents where Timmy wishes his emotions out and Happy, Sad, Angry, etc. are running around doing stuff. While Inside Out may have done this idea the best, it's definitely not an original idea.

Out of the Pixar sequels, this one is the most interesting and entertaining. I was surprised by Inside Out 2, the first set the gauge really high, I was worried that the sequel would be a step down, my frets were unfounded, the sequel exceeded my expectations. I really related to Reily, I had lots of moments of anxiety and stress during my teenage and early adult years, where the grown ups in my life did nothing for me, other than chastise me and tell me to suck it up, ironically, I know tell those same adults the same thing, it's karma as I see fit. Overall, I rank Inside Out 2 the best Pixar sequel I have seen in a long time, with Wreck-it-Ralph 2 still as the worst to me, which is why I found it greatly satisfying when Pixar riffed on Ralph, after that film's dig on Merida, for that "From the other Studio" gag.

Well, I suppose that, technically, if the sequels they make are good, then it isn't a huge problem, unless they run out of good franchises to make sequels for, then they will HAVE to make new franchises again.

@KaylieghHerefordАй бұрын
AMAZING video!!!!! Also, I have to say, as someone who has been struggling with anxiety attacks (Mostly due to overwhelm), this might be one of the most accurate depictions of a panic attack I've ever seen in media. Anxiety frantically racing through the console, and yet still being frozen in place is such a perfect visual. Your thoughts are racing, but your frozen. Your trapped. Your powerless. And that makes Anxiety race all the more. The way that none of the other emotions can get in there is just amazing, because it's true, when your having a panic attack it's so much harder to focus on anything other then the anxiety. I love how it's shown almost as a storm, because that's what it FEELS like. A raging storm that you can't get through. And the cuts between Anxiety, and Riley, is perfect! I especially love that it shows Riley gripping her heart, as anxiety almost makes you feel like your heart is being strangled. The dynamic, almost frantic camera shots empathize the way that the world gets distorted, you can't see anything pass the fear. The fast breathing, sweat dripping down her face, and panicked eyes, all add to the feel that this is a true panic attack. And the "I'm not good enough!" being her new sense of self, one MADE by anxiety, is one of the most accurate things I've ever seen. Because the more anxious you get, the more you start feeling really bad about yourself. You start feeling like your a bad person. Your not good enough. And the finishing touch is that I LOVE that this panic attack was triggered, not just by one thing, but by a slow buildup of things getting worse and worse. Until finally, you just can't take it. There's only so much emotional overwhelm one can take, after-all. This scene really touched me, as a girl Riley's age, who happens to be going through the "I'm not good enough" phase right now, this movie is helping me deal with my own anxiety. Also, what you specifically said about not viewing yourself as either perfect or worthless almost made me cry, because I really needed to hear that. So thanks!

Hello. Long time viewer first time commenter here. Can I just say here that, just like how this film is Pixar’s best sequel yet, this video is your best review yet. I agree with everything you’ve said and pointed out here and also pointed out some stuff I didn’t even notice the first time I’ve watched. You managed to put how I felt about this film in the words I had trouble putting in to. As always, I can’t wait to see what you’ll post next.

I saw this film with my younger sister, Rose and our best friend, Alex, we're all young adults, Alex and I are 21 and Rose is 18, and yeah, this film really helped me realize that I have been struggling with Anxiety for quite a while now, because I've constantly felt like I wasn't good enough, and so hearing Riley say "I'm not good enough." to herself, it just broke my heart, because I've felt that way on many occasions, and during the climax when Riley is having an anxiety attack, I was literally shaking in my seat, and panicking, and it was so noticeable, Alex had to reach across Rose and grab my hand, he even did the thumb rub to help comfort me during that scene, it was that intense, and like it felt so real, it was like I saw myself in Riley during that scene, and you can really tell that Pixar did their homework when executing it! Loved this film, as well as its predecessor! 10/10 Would absolutely recommend!!!!

This 1-hour review is worth it for how perfect this movie is. I certainly didn’t know what to expect, but this movie blew my mind ten-thousandfold. - The characters (especially Anxiety) are so good and hilarious while not deviating from their original characterization in a big way. - Anxiety is a great antagonist (not a real villain, since she’s not “evil” in that sense of the word) because she’s so relatable and funny. - Joy is given more fleshed-out insecurities and ends up being more relatable than ever with her struggles with optimism (especially when I’m going to finish high school soon and with my view on current pop culture). - The Sense of Self system is really cool and a smart new idea to explore. - Like Rockotar says, the conflict with the Sense of Self is so good and relatable as well. - Riley’s hockey hobby is really well expanded upon since it was just a hobby in the first movie. - The new actors for Disgust and Fear did do really well. - The music and animation style is still great. In short, like Rockotar says, this movie is practically perfect.

I resonate so heavily with the bit about “making the right decisions when we’re young or be doomed forever, even though those choices might make you miserable in those moments” I spent my entire time in grade school worrying about having perfect grades that I literally didn’t have time to develop social skills or long lasting friendships, and then when I got to college, turns out I really needed those skills and that my grades really didn’t give me a better chance at success than anyone else at my university

I watched this movie recently with my grandma, and I was commenting to her about how accurate this movie is to teen life and anxiety. A year ago, I had an anxiety attack, and when I watched Riley have one, how fast Anxiety was moving and not be able to stop even if she wanted to, felt so accurate. You can't focus on anything but what caused the attack

One of my few complaints was the soundtrack. Micheal Giacchino didn't return, and it's very easy to tell. While there are great parts, it mostly sounded pretty generic to me. I wish they used the main theme of the original more.

I actually like the main theme of this movie more than the first's but I will agree that the first Movie's soundtrack is the superior overall.

I enjoy how both Joy and Anxiety are the anti-heroes in their own respective movies. In Inside Out, Joy wants the best for Riley and believes she is the remedy, but initially doesn’t understand the fact that Riley cannot be happy and positive in a situation that’s bad. In Inside Out 2, Anxiety believes that the other emotions don’t understand the fact that people could hate Riley if she doesn’t make a good first impression, and eventually she spirals further into her own concern for Riley, that she can’t see that what Riley needs is the other emotions. As opposed to being opposites, Joy and Anxiety are both quite similar, both wanting what’s best for Riley, but being blind to the harm they do until Riley faces the consequence.

I also love the "Riley wants joy" moment towards the end. I mean, it's so heartbreaking that she was so focused on fitting to get a place in the team for her future that she completely forgot WHY she wanted to be in the team in the first place : she loves hockey, it makes her happy. All of her efforts is supposed to garantee her happiness, but by letting anxiety taking too much control, she misses the point and ends up unhappy. And it's only after realizing that she needs to accept who she is that she's able to find the happiness of playing hockey again, the reason she went through all this. Damn, those movies, why do they always find a way to make me cry???!!!

I like how the film shows that there’s a difference between pushing yourself to be better & applying constant pressure. We see this when the pressure Anxiety puts on Riley to be better at making goals pays off. This is a hockey camp & practicing is a part of that. Getting up early shows her dedication to Val. This is an adequate amount of pressure to put on yourself when you have a goal. Anxiety helps us plan for the future & take our current situations more seriously. That isn’t a bad thing. It only turns into a problem when you don’t let up.

This movie has become one of my all time favorites just because of how much i related to it. I went though all those fears and emotions as well and i guess seeing it really made me happy to know that i wasn't alone and that most likely everyone else seeing this movie could relate to it. and that the message of accepting your flaws is what really made me cry because when i finally learned that cession, i truly became happy.

When i saw the first inside out movie i was in a very similar place as Riley. Moved away to far away state, left behind all my friends who at that point id known my entire life, and was stuck rebuilding the ruins of my mental health and social life. So when i heard about the second movie i was so excited to see another movie tackle struggles i had also been facing. Being a sophomore in high school it absolutely nailed it for me. Im glad theres a movie out there for younger kids that dosent just glorify high school and actually highlights the new struggles they'll most likely face. Its a very good way to help kids grapple with their emotions and learn its actually ok to feel these things, these 2 movies have helped me deal with my emotions better than any therapist ive ever seen. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk
