After a recent interview with Todd La Torre my feelings have changed. What a nice guy, and his voice is amazing. So I’ll leave my last comment because I meant it at the time. I love Tate. His wife not so much. She’s disregarded every inquiry I’ve made since this chat. She’s read my inquiries and flat ignored them. For me a persons character far outshines their talent. La Torre has both in spades. His most recent solo album is awesome!

I disagree, Geoff was killing the band with his mediocre songwriting and bad decisions. I'm so glad the band is still alive and doing well, The Verdict is an amazing album and I consider it the true successor to Promised Land.

Absolutely true. Queensryche was pretty much an opening act. Most underappreciated band. I was there for the entirety. Very few can say that. I saw them when the 4 song EP came out opening for Twisted Sister at the Paradise in Boston in October 1983. Saw them opening for Kiss on the Warning tour November 1984. Then headline January 1985 at the Paradise in Boston. Paradise was an medium sized club. 1986 opened for Ozzy at the Kingston fairgrounds outside in the pouring rain in Kingston NH. 1987 opened for Def Leppard. 1988 opened for Metallica both Mindcrime tours. Then the breakthrough Empire saw them headline nearly packed arenas. At the Providence Civic Center in the summer of 1991 then the fall of 1991 in the original Boston Garden. Then in 1994 on the phenomenal and underappreciated Promised Land tour I saw them in a half full Great Woods Pavilion now known as the Xfinity Center in Mansfield Massachusetts. July 1995. Hear In The Now tour an even more empty Great Woods Pavilion August 1997. This was the last time to my knowledge that the band headlined arenas. So we are talking about a 6 year period. August 6 2000 Great Woods Pavilion again Mansfield Massachusetts opening for Iron Maiden on the Q2K/Greatest Hits tour. Saw them twice in 2003 Tribe tour with co headliner Dream Theater in the summer in a mid sized venue the Bank Of Boston Pavilion and on their own in the fall at the Hampton Beach Casino to a 3/4 full venue. A small venue as it is. 2005 opened for Priest in Mansfield Massachusetts on the Mindcrime II tour. Then 2006 their own mid sized venue Hampton Beach Casino headline Mindcrime and Mindcrime II tour which was just awesome but barely anyone there. 2009 headline Hampton Beach Casino American Soldier tour place half empty. Then 2011 again HBC place 1/4 full if that. So Geoff's assessment that they were an arena opening act for 30 years is pretty accurate except for the time period 1991 to 1997. As I said filled arena 1991 peak of their popularity then steady decline to 1997 then back to opener and headline small venue. Although they never had the popularity and longevity of Maiden , Priest , and Ozzy they always had the respect of those bands. I know Steve Harris of Maiden and KK Downing of Priest always spoke highly of them. I always believed Queensryche was an acquired taste. I often described their music as fancy. I always will have my memories. I plan on seeing Geoff in June up in Portland Maine. Thanks for reading.

Really great interview! Now that Geoff sounds so good in present time, I think it would be awesome id he put together a whole new band, with new music, new songwriting etc. Something which isn't connected with Queensryche at all -But they would have to play some of those songs live, of course. If Geoff put together a band with new songwriters, and maybe got DeGarmo out of his hide, it would be freaking epic! :D

Geoff Tate. Great guy. Even greater singer. His candle burns bright wherever he goes, whatever he does. That's all we are really- a burning candle. We should appreciate the flame that's inside everyone. You don't have to be a shining star to be great. As far as music goes now a days it's make your music then play your music. The simple truth is that Operation Mindcrime and Empire are epic albums, really unmatched in their era and genera, even standing the test of time. You can still play them today and there isn't anything dated about them, that say's everything. I could not, in any thought I had at the time, have imagined the FALL that band was headed for. It was as if they vanished. Their new 'music' wasn't good or great, no one wanted to hear it and for good reason. It sold poorly because it was far below the standards they had set. Once you take yourself too seriously...its over.

This is a really great interview. Many different topics were discussed. I appreciated Geoff's input about the differences between how the music industry operates today vs 30 years ago, YES, VERY differently!! However, swindling hasn't changed unfortunately.

i think he means for much of their existence, they were openers. That includes after Empire and Promised Land tours. The Livecrime and Empire and Promised Land tours, not sure about HITNF but heard that was a disaster, other than those they opened most of the time for their bigger tours
