"If there's any bone in your body he's gonna brake it. Give the man a little respect". One of the best lines in this movie. Along with Dixon saying "He's got bricks in his gloves".

This is exactly what I noticed. Dixon felt the punches by mentioning that. That's why Duke said, everytime you hit him, you gotta make a dent.

@Alexi Barona The vast majority of those losses came before Rocky received any training from Mickey. He was very rough around the edges, basically untrained and with most of his potential untapped. A major theme in Rocky I (initially a standalone film) is that he could've been something if people around him had given him a real shot, if the opportunities had been available to him. The fight against Apollo, although a huge long shot, is his last chance to prove his worth as an aging fighter with battle scars.

So long as I live, I'll never forget the theater audience reaction when Rocky was able to hurt Mason. There were people literally clapping and cheering thunderously. There were some who were even crying, I know we're in the superhero craze era. This film was one of the most inspirational parts of my early 20's. Everytime this movie comes on, it takes me back to that time. It isn't over till it's over.

And honestly look at Rocky's career stats, 81 fights with 54 KO's going into this one. The Rocky movies were a small sample size and focused on some of those losses and decisions, but most of the time when Rocky fought he won and won big especially after Creed started training him. The ones he lost, even when he was overmatched against Lang and Apollo he never backed down or just gave in. His trainer was fully aware that if Dixon walked into this fight expecting Rocky to cooperate he was going to get knocked out. Rocky's whole strategy is taking hits to get inside the other guy's reach, finding their weak point, and caving it in.

There's two things I think are absolutely brilliant about this fight in terms of story. 1) Mason breaking his hand on Rocky's hip. Not only was it a great equalizer in the fight, but it also shows that Mason is getting older and fighting the same battle Rocky is, just at a different point in his life. 2) The end of the fight -- the final decision -- is exactly the same as the original Rocky movie -- a controversial split decision in a fight that many felt Rocky won. Absolute genius.

Whether Rocky is way past his prime or not, Mason needed to show that he can rise to the challenge when someone stands in front of him and doesn't go down and even throws back. At 2:01 you can hear genuine excitement in Max's voice. He's not just playing a role there, every boxing enthusiast has a special place for the Rocky films in their heart regardless of how unrealistic the portrayal of the sport is so he's genuinely pumped up to get to watch Stallone playing Rocky in the ring right in front of him against Antonio Tarver, an actual professional boxer. And this was one of the most realistic fights in the series because Stallone and Tarver agreed to engage in legit sparring, they're actually beating the hell out of each other at times. I bet Jim and Larry were just as excited as Max, they're just not quite as animated. Great movie, on par with the first one IMO. EDIT: Noticed at 7:14 Robert's "Go after him!" line is delivered with the same tone as his younger self's line in Rocky V when Rocky's about to KO Tommy. I wonder if it's an intentional homage considering Stallone reportedly doesn't like to acknowledge Rocky V.

I always wondered what Rocky's record was. Looks like he had 57 wins, 23 losses, 1 draw. 23 losses, that's a lot
@erickcalderon62573 жыл бұрын
Well before he fought Apollo he had 20 losses, 21 was against Apollo in Rocky I, 22 was against Clubber in Rocky III. Still don't know where that 23 loss came from.. Before his first fight against Apollo he had 44 victories, he defended the tittle 10 times so that's 54 victories, 55 Clubber, 56 Drago... Still don't know where that 57 win came from..

I love how they got a real boxer to fight in this movie to play Rocky Balboa and also cool to see actor Antonio Tarver in here also.

I love the message of this movie, you don’t give up you still have a chance. We should all have a little Rocky in us.

In terms of this fight, it was not only just about Rocky having one more in him, but finally being the opponent where Dixon could prove he was a worthy champion. It definitely reflected how weak the boxing scene is since the early 2000s.

2:08 Dude, George Foreman was in the Rocky universe? Was Ali in the Rocky universe? Where was Apollo vs Ali?
@TheSWFuniverse5 жыл бұрын
Frazier was too, he appears before the Apollo-Rocky fight in the original movie. Tyson in this movie of course.

Apollo was Ali.
@mkonstantinm15 жыл бұрын
You're right. At first Rocky was completely based on true event- fight of Ali as champion versus some unknown fighter, who stayed up on his legs until the end. It was inspiration for Stallone. He made Apollo be cocky, charismatic, intelligent and all other stuff like Ali. Carl Weathers was chosen for the role of Apollo because he naturaly was that type of guy - arrogant, intelligent, cocky and charismatic. Great project.

Old heroes, old lions are the most dangerous. They've lived to be this old in a profession that sent many young men to their graves FOR A DAMN REASON.

Also, there aren't words to describe how ridiculous a Mason vs. Drago fight would be. Apollo creed is a hundred times the fighter Mason is and Drago killed him in the ring with ease. Mason would probably have died the second Drago gave him that scary glare of his.
@AK-lg2ub7 жыл бұрын
Dang right!! Mason actually was a paper champion!!! when i saw those scenes in the film where those experts favour Mason for the win I was like "C'mon man Rocky would've KILLED him inside of 2 rounds in his prime"
@nuraby_92284 жыл бұрын
In real life Dolph nearly killed Stallone with one punch. If it wasn't for the movie plot, Drago would have wiped out pretty much anyone in the Rocky universe lol.

@EvanderHolyfield7 Long years of training, turns they're body into a complete stone, and the training that boxing requires, does not allow body to go weak, more like urm, EVER! Even with a small break, you can tend to return into shape in no time. One more thing, if you watched Rocky Balboa, as i mean, Rocky 6, in the begining, he does a bit of workout every morning, just to keep his body up. Even a little, gives a boxer bonus more, then any avarage guy, due to the past carrier of hard training.

For me is the best fight in the Rocky franchise: perfectly filmed and really catching. When they talked about Rocky Balboa everyone thought it would have been corny but was a really good movie, probably the better one after Rocky.
