Fun Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot guerrilla-style, with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

If you look at the locations that Rocky is running in Philly, he goes from the industrial rail yards, thru the Italian market, to the canal, to the docks, and then winds back around to the Museum of Art. That's like 10 miles total distance. Pretty damn good ,especially when he starts sprinting at the end and powers up those steps.

Sylvester Stallone will never ever be forgotten. Many many years from now he will still be talked about. Not because he was an actor, but because he made his own life. Coming from absolute poverty with a pregnant wife to feed, he banked on himself to make a living at a time when no one believed in him. people say that this role ensured that he was famous for the next 20 years and he didn't do anything worthy after this, but that's not the point is it ? every human beings dream in life is to live it with pride and be able to support his family, and that's what this man did , despite the fact that he was laughed at all his life. He is an inspiration and I will continue telling his story.

Tell me about it, Stallone is one of my greatest heroes and I met him in person twice and you cannot believe how cool he is. I drove him twice when I use to drive a taxi in New York city. He wanted to know everything about my family and how I was doing, told me stories of how he use to shop lift dog food to feed his dog ha ha. Bruce Willis on the other hand is a total dick. Wouldn't even shake my hand and refused to even talk to me so it didn't surprise me in the least when he pissed off Sly over the Expendables. Willis and his deformed looking daughters can go fuck themselves, seriously.

@@alshaeebi812 I sorta agree there as well, I was able to finish 4 but was disappointed by it as well. The story was totally farfetched in contrast to the motivating yet relatively grounded stories of Rocky 1/2 and just felt like a lazy patriotic jab as opposed to a well developed story with a good message. I felt the same about Rocky 3 but to a lesser extent. If the Rocky series was only Rocky 1/2 I would've thought of it as one of my favorite movie franchises ever, but with the later sequels I see it as a somewhat decent movie franchise for the most part.

As Roger Ebert wrote in 1976: "This young Sylvester Stallone, as he climbs the steps of the Philadelphia Museum and pumps his fist, he's not just sending a message for Rocky Balboa, he's sending a message to the industry, the whole Hollywood industry."
@Kane-ib5sn
@Kane-ib5sn 6 жыл бұрын
so let me get this straight; Rocky isn't just a movie about a man who defies all odds, to become heavy weight champion of the world, it is a metaphor of how Stallone went from being a child in foster care, a homeless young man, sleeping in a bus shelter, writing a story (Rocky), and holding onto that story, despite all temptation, and starring in it, to being the highest paid actor in Hollywood...one, is metaphorical to illustrate it in every man's imagination, the other is a real life story. that is why Stallone is the most humble of Hollywood actors...strange, but true.

He must have known it would work because he could see himself in the role, could imagine the conviction he's bringing to it, and I can't think of another actor who could quite have pulled off this performance. There's that exhilarating moment when Stallone, in training, runs up the steps of Philadelphia's art museum, leaps into the air, shakes his fist at the city, and you know he's sending a message to the whole movie industry." - Ebert

Something about the whole shot (at the top of the stairs) is just so mesmerizingly beautiful, and something I think you can only capture in film (not digital... *real* cameras). You can feel the cold in the air, see the fog over the city, and just experience that lived-in, real feel of that moment in the city. It's just Rocky alone up there saying, "This is where I am... this is who I am... one person here in my little section of the world in my slice of the human story on this earth." No phones or screens or earbuds... no electronics but the dim lights and the distant cars. Just a man and the world. It makes me feel proud and thrilled to be alive. If aliens or future historians needed to watch a handful of movies to get a snapshot of humanity in the twentieth century, Rocky would be one of them.

It's been 45 years since I sat next to my dad in a movie theater and watched Rocky for the first time, along with the rest of the world. I still remember every moment of it, from the trumpets over the moving word "Rocky" at the film's opening to Rocky's beaten-up face freezing in motion at the end. The movie itself was an unknown contender then, and it knocked out in surprise everyone who saw it, and still keeps knocking people down while lifting them up at the same time.

After Rocky and Jaws and Superman and Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, I just assumed that going to the cinema was like this all the time. But of all of them, Star Wars had me stunned like nothing else. The outside world suddenly became less real and more real all at once. God bless Lucas, Stallone, Spielberg, Donner.

Without a doubt it's the strings that come in there. The sound evokes the same feeling of your voice breaking from shouting your heart out, it's the most raw concoction of pride and strength and anger and inexplicable sadness that you can muster. Then you pair that with the visuals. Where last time he was exhausted by the time he reached the top of those steps, clutching his side in pain, like just crossing the finish line took everything he had, now we see him excitedly dashing up those stairs, leaping over several at a time like a little kid, blazing his trail to the top as if to say "yeah, I'm back, and I could go even further if I wanted to, and you can never, ever take that away from me" Honestly, this movie overall didn't wow me on my first watch. But this montage is genuinely one of the greatest pieces of film of all time. Few works of art can so powerfully and simply show what it means to be human. This is how you make a movie.

The speed-up to the sprint from 1:45 to 2:00 still gives me full-body goosebumps every time! Climbing up the steps of the art museum does as well, sure, but I feel like the speed-up shot doesn't get enough attention by comparison. Also, in the push-up shots, it's probably because your eye is naturally drawn to Sylvester in the middle of the shot and his impressive feats of athleticism, but I'd never noticed before that you can see Mickey and his assistant (on the other side of Rocky) actually counting the push-ups as they lean on the ropes. Fun Fact: the scene after this, Rocky's "Go the Distance" monologue in bed with Adrienne, was almost cut from the shooting schedule altogether. It was the last scene to be filmed, they were running out of time and money, and only after begging, bargaining, and very nearly threatening was Sly granted a single take to get the whole scene exactly right. So no pressure or anything!

October 1st, 2024. I went with my wife from Italy to Philadelphia just to run on the world-famous "Rocky steps" and honour Rocky. Both our fathers are big fans of Rocky and we grew up watching the movies. While sitting on the stairs my wife video-called her father to show him that she was really there: he was visibly moved and some tears apperead on his face. Later, we took our time to walk to the city center, we visited the City Hall and the Liberty Bell, and ate the famous cheese steak. We stayed in Philadelphia just a few hours, but it was enough to appreciate the beauty of the city and the kindness of the locals.

I watched this movie again last night and it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many times I’ve seen it and I have seen Rocky more than any other movie. It just gets better every time after it was over I say what I always say this movie is perfect. It’s my favorite movie for a reason because it appeals to the underdog in all of us it’s so relatable. I think the reason I love the film and the series so much is because Rocky is all of us. We’ve been written off, we’ve been underestimated, told we were no good and yet through all that we persevere and try to prove to everyone including ourselves that we can do the impossible. In Rocky’s case the impossible was taking a seemingly unbeatable and invincible champion to the distance of 15 rounds. It’s really inspiring and even though I practically know the script by heart I never get tired of watching it.
