My dad said that this movie was instantly iconic when it came out in the 70's. All of a sudden teenage boys all across America, who were so inspired by the story, started waking up at 3am downed a glass full of eggs and went for a run. It really is about overcoming life's obstacles & challenges, pushing yourself, making good relationships with good people, being the best you that you can be, and never passing up a shot at greatness no matter the outcome. Man, I love this movie. Now it's time to go for a run...🎵Gonna Fly Now🎶

Virtually the beginning of the "modern" era in movies, that and Bonnie And Clyde and a few others (Alfie, Blow Up, etc...). What's funny is the part in Rocky that you're comparing it to reminds me of another iconic movie moment: Marlon Brando shouting out "Stellaaaaaa!" in "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1952), the performance that is the dividing line of all acting: pre-Brando and post-Brando. Also in many ways the story of Rocky parallels Sylvester Stallone's acting career. In the 1970s, Stallone had acted in some indie films, he tried pursuing major lead roles but no one gave him any chance. So he wrote Rocky as his last saving grace and he got Oscar Nominations.
@Bad_Wolf_Media2 жыл бұрын
One of the most overlooked aspects of this movie is the cinematography. While not the first film to use a stabilized camera, this was the first one to have extensive use of the new SteadiCam system. The training montage, long running distance, and running with him up the stairs, that was all stuff that couldn't really be done before without crews laying hundreds of feet of track for dollies. It's such a commonplace thing nowadays that it's completely forgotten that it had to start somewhere. And that somewhere is here.

It's fantastic to "relive" the experience of rediscovering my favourite movie with you, Mary! Thanks! At the age of 12 or so I promessed myself I would one day go to Philadelphia to visit the iconic places of the movie... It was at the beginning of the 80s after having dicovered the movie: I watched it on my own on a VCR and was deeply touched by those characters and the sensitivity of Stallone/Rocky. Thing is...I live in Belgium 😁! But I finally managed to fulfill this dream back in 2019. It took me almost 40 years, ah ah ah! And it was a fantastic feeling! The more I watch this movie, the more it touches me (to tears). And the more I find unfair to put Stallone in the same league than Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, Norris... Sly is proved many times he is a real actor, director, author & overall artist, even if he has mainly chosen action, movments and muscles to tell stories etc. Sly: more than meets the eye! 🤣

25:05 - Boxers used to do that when they were training. Nowadays they probably don't anymore since raw eggs don't carry and extra benefits that over-easy would carry. This was filmed on a very low budget for its time, and they cut corners wherever possible.

The scene that always gets me emotional is where rocky is told he's not Apollos sparring partner, but actually fighting him. The fact he believes he wouldn't be good enough, shows how downcast and humble rocky is about his abilities. That added to the gym confrontation with Mickey, where Mickey knows he had all the tools as a boxer, but being a leg breaker compromised him showed rocky could have been a contender through an orthodox route if he applied himself better, and Mickey had been better. Rocky wasnt a bum plucked from obscurity, he was always Creeds equal. It's a great lesson, all you need is to believe in yourself (Rocky), someone to believe in you (Adriann), and someone to guide you (Mickey)

Depois de finalmente conseguir vender os direitos de Rocky e faturar uma boa grana, Stallone pagou 10 vezes mais o valor que ele vendeu seu cachorro para tê-lo de volta, não aguentava a saudade que tinha dele.

The characterisations of Rocky/Adrian were brilliantly done, as in how they complement and enrich each other. He helps bring her out of her shell, as a shy and very quiet person to someone who's making jokes and laughing with him. And she in turn gives him an inner confidence and drive to do better for himself. It's explored even more in the sequels, but something that never changes is Rocky's feelings for her. Definitely a love story centred around boxing, rather than being an out and out sports film.

Clearly there is a scene or two that would have been handled differently if this film had been made today. But this film was an instant classic and remains iconic to this day. In the 1970s, Italian-Americans were still primarily working-class and lived in tough gritty neighborhoods. Also, cities hadn't undergone the renovations that they've mostly enjoyed since. Italian-American organized crime was still widespread, though it remains in pockets throughout the northeast of the United States and into Canada with influences in places like Florida, Phoenix, AZ, etc.

Rocky losing to Apollo here actually makes tons of sense. Rocky's fighting style is dependent on letting his opponent wail on him for a bit before countering with a few good hits of his own, rinse and repeat. He "blocks the hits with his face", as the announcer says, Its very effective in the actual combat portion of boxing, but for scoring points it is a disastrous technique.

You know someone actually took the time to find out how long rocky runs for his training. They determined with all the monuments, historic buildings and streets he runs by that Rocky actually runs a marathon and a quarter every time. This guy literally runs a marathon and a quarter every morning while he’s training. No wonder his stamina is high

That Simpson's scene is actually a tribute to the movie, The Graduate.

Not it wasn't. It was a call back to Wayne's World 2. 🤪
You beat me to it. I was about to say the same thing. Anyway, Mary, now you need to watch The Graduate and get the proper Simpson's reference!

Loved your commentary, Mary....and I look forward to enjoying your trip down this rabbit hole. The only advice I would give is that you follow it in order...as each one builds upon the previous one You don't want to find yourself watching and suddenly going, "wait..what...what happened to....??"

The first Rocky movie is one of the best films of all time to this day. Fun fact the actor who plays Mickey also played Penguin in 1966 Batman tv show. RIP Burgess Meredith.
