I was born and raised in Florida and still here to this day. My dad and that entire side of my family however are philly bred. With that said, he was obsessed with all things Philly. Eagles, Sixers and of coarse Rocky. This was the last Rocky movie we saw together before he died. I've seen him cry once in my life, and it was when Rocky delivers that speech to his son. This will forever be my favorite Rocky installment for that and many more reasons.

Best scene and motivational speech, words to live by. "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!" ~ Rocky Balboa ~

This was one of the very best Rocky movies of all time. I absolutely loved it and still do. The fight itself and the crowd was fantastic. Rocky had one of the very best lines to me in Cinema history. Talking to his kid about winning. Goosebumps! The end of the fight and Marie shouting win it! Win it! And both of them are trading blows. Mason Dixon gets on the job training in respect and delivers it. I get teary eyed every time I watch it and that is not really my way.

My only real issue with this one is that some of the stuff they cut out should have stayed in the movie. Paulie's breakdown in the alley in particular is fantastic. "Why didn't I die instead of my sister?" is a line that hits hard.

He was a self destructive alcoholic and people like that tend not to live very long and Adrian was otherwise quite healthy and getting the cancer was just bad luck. I loved this movie when it first came out way back then. Quick note... Mason Dixon is played by Antonio Tarver who is a retired professional boxer who beat Roy Jones Jr. TWICE. Not a small feat. Anywho... I agree with you about this character. They really did a great job in setting him up to be a very sympathetic antagonist with his old mentor/trainer. But they totally abandoned it throughout the rest of the movie and that was a huge missed opportunity. That bothered me back then and it still bothers me to this day. Still love this movie though.

You are the first of so many reviewers of this my favorite film (and series) of all time to give props to Rocky 5. Rocky has been my favorite film since the late 1970s when I first saw it. 1. While I do find Rocky 3 to be memorable & a fine film of the series, it doesn’t match up to 1, 2, or 6..I found myself disappointed with Rocky 3 mainly bc Mickey was so crucial to the heart of this character, seeing him die literally left me in tears (albeit quietly crying, & thankfully it was a dark theatre back in that summer of 82). The only other criticism I have of Rocky 3 is the final fight with Clubber, while Clubber was a great character (cldnt hv been better after the awesome rivalry with Apollo), this Rocky 3 final fight scene with Clubber was somewhat unrealistic, but nothing compared to the sensational crap of the next film in the franchise (Rocky 4). I feel like Clubber beating Rocky even the second time wld hv been more realistic..as all champions eventually loose. I even felt this way leaving the theatre the first time. Rocky 4 wld hv been much better had this happened & Clubber simply lost to Drago the first round..instead of Apollo loosing an dying (which was so sad); then Rocky appearing & training Clubber to whip Drago..if Rocky had lost to Clubber in fight 2..I cld pass on Tommy Gunn..and the street fight scene & betrayal of Rocky…just have Rocky 4 be the return of Rocky to his home of south Phili (just like in Rocky 5) seeing Drago beat Clubber (the champion) & Rocky moving in for a rematch with the Russian Bear..thus, part 4 & 5 wld be the same film..making way for the glorious Rocky Balboa later..Alas..At this point, it seemed the essence of the character, knowing how to take wins an losses with stride, was becoming the invincible hero. Gone was ‘no matter how good you are, there is always someone better. There is an end to every high, but how you take the lows determines the next high’ mentality of the character. Alas..we had part 4. 2. Rocky 4 is the flop of the series, or any movie series (imo)..I can’t stand the goofy-ness of the character, the death of Apollo was completely unrealistic, on two counts at least. Number one..the ref wld hv stopped it, & two..if the Russian beat Creed this bad..a definite equal to Rocky in fighting skill..how cld Balboa ever come back an beat this moster? Furthermore, how cld any man have come back after the beating Rocky took in this Russian arena? They couldn’t…this was also unrealistic. The whole fillm I wish never had been made; I loathe it that much. In fact, Stallone even said (later, regarding R-4), that he was just making money at this time, & was disappointed in himself over this one: it was just sensationalism. Not his exact words..but as close as I can recall (can’t find the quote now, as this was years ago). 3. Rocky 5 is a return to what I had missed for so long..the gritty Rocky on the gritty streets of Kensington Philadelphia, not near as good as part 1, 2, or 6..but I totally disagree with the critics of it. If part 4 in the franchise remains..this is a mighty come back for the series. 4. Rocky Balboa was as good as Rocky 2..i love it so much..if there had been no Rocky 3-5..this wld hv still been a perf sequel..this many years later, Rocky Balboa

This was actually the first I saw. I grew up knowing about the first 4 films(didn't know about Rocky 5 until I saw it at the rental store), but the positive reception to this one made me really curious. I watched this with my mom, who is a huge Rocky fan, and I was so taken by the speech Rocky made to his son it encouraged me to watch the rest of the series. So, I actually disagree that it doesn't work as a film to get into the franchise because it did for me. How the characters carry themselves; you get a history in how they talk to each other and know each other. It really worked for me and is my personal favorite of the franchise. Great video again, Cody.

Following up on my favorite line is also the fighting choreography is done more realistic and they really hit each other more often and harder in this movie than the others with the exception of rocky 4 and Stallone is a boxer as well as a actor physically and mentally because Antonio tarver stated in a interview just how hard sly could hit and how he got in shape for the movie despite his age and it inspired tarver to push his own career harder and he was the light heavy weight champion and was thinking of moving up to heavy weight and rocky is all about motivating people to do better.

One of the best theater experiences I ever had was watching this opening night with a theater full of hardcore Rocky fans. There were people wearing Rocky gear and we were cheering like it was a real fight at the end. Place went crazy when Rocky knocked down Mason Dixon. I had been a fan of Rocky for a number of years before seeing it. I was probably 12 or so when I became a big fan and was 15 when this came out. I begged my parents for the five movie DVD boxset and they bought it for me. Never thought there would be more Rocky after V. So I was beyond hyped when the teaser for 6 was released. It didn’t disappoint. Still one of my favorites in the franchise.

I will say this was tied for one of my favorites because it ties everything from the 1st rocky all the way to this movie perfectly in my opinion and that's sly brilliant mind and love for this character and franchise and it's fans as well. There aren't many actors and directors like Stallone anymore and the man don't get the credit he deserves some times or enough in my opinion as well. He has said the fans of rocky are so special to him and unique that he could carry on with making these movies for as long as he can. I'm happy for the creed movies but if it had ended with rocky Balboa I think everyone would have been satisfied. I looked at the first creed movie when I seen it as a bonus round of rocky until it set in that this could keep going and going and would never be old or not good and we haven't had enough of rocky because the creed movies have been so good.

Mason Dixon is not just an actor. Its Antonio Tarver. The first man to beat Roy Jones Jr. Knocked him out cold in the 2nd round, and basically killed Roys prime, aura, and basically career as a top tier boxer with one punch. We go see a movie and the teaser trailer for this comes on and I just look at my dad and we both got excited. We saw the movie together and it was a great experience for both of us. I think the nostalgia in the movie is perfectly done. I'm honestly kinda surprised you didn't touch on Adrian dying more in your review. Like you stated in previous reviews, they're a power couple in movies. Him reading to her touched my soul. At the end with the normal tone "yo, Adrian, we did it." Just kills me. Anyways this is in my top 3 probably just based off the theater experience I had with this with my dad.

Since you mentioned Escape Plan, I strongly recommend that you should do a review series for the Escape Plan movies and reviews of them. I really like the first one, but a lot of people hate Escape Plan 2: HADES but I actually like that sequel despite the fact it was a straight to DVD release and that it has poor reviews from critics. I will defend that movie because I really like the high tech concept of the prison that is featured in the movie. I think that prison, HADES, is pretty cool; the concept of it is just awesome to me. I would love to see you make videos in the future about The Escape Plan movies. There's actually 3 of them. I actually have the Escape Plan trilogy on a DVD set. The first one is my favorite though. I love how Jim Caviezel is this dark, calculated villain. He makes a pretty good movie villain and a badass warden of a black site prison in the original Escape Plan with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

Rocky Balboa is a great installment to the franchise as well as a respectable follow up to the previous film. Rocky’s all alone in the world even though he still has Paulie and his son in his life but they don’t really support him until he gets his boxing license and declares that he wants to get rid of stuff in his basement and coming to terms with personal loss of his wife Adrian but when all was said and done against Mason Dixon, he told Paulie that the beast is gone he was finally able to come to terms with overcoming his sadness and his personal anger and become emotionally stronger than he ever was before which is why this is such a good movie and a compelling end to the Rocky franchise that spanned 30 years from 1976 to 2006. Unlike most other film franchises Rocky is still relevant and appeals to any and all who still have hopes and dreams of being winners and champions of all kinds. 🥊 #RockyFanForever

There are so many great things to be said about this movie it would literally take me forever to talk about everyone of them so I'll do my best to shorten this as possible. There are so many rocky iconic lines that people love and I do as well but one from this movie I love that I've lived by and don't hear as much and it's not how hard you can hit but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward how much you can take and keep moving forward, that's how winning is done. He tells rocky Jr that and when mason hits him so hard he goes down to one knee in the late rounds of the fight.
