I read & watched a documentary about Rocky 5 in which advidsen said he only agreed to do part 5 because of Rocky dying but Stallone changed the ending & because of this the whole tone of the movie had to change so in his eyes Stallone was responsible for the tone change because without killing Rocky it had to he different & it wasn't the movie he signed up for. He also said since Sly wasnt willing to kill Rocky it suffered a box office death instead & he said Stallone stepped in making other creative changes he didn't like. He said had Stallone just let him do the movie they both originally agreed on then it would have been good & Rocky dying would be a event people would go see. Now with all that said I'm glad Sly changed his mind & am happy with the movie we got. But I just wanted to point out his side of the story.

Don King was a corrupt motherfucker and a thief, but he was arguably the greatest boxing promoter in the history of the sport. Rocky V gets so much blind hate and thats unfortunate. I’ve always liked it….as a fan of the character, I enjoyed seeing what happened after the astronomical highs of Rocky IV (let’s face it, going back to the roots was the only real way to follow up that juggernaut of a film). Story-wise, I like the father/son relationship and how it mirrors what Sly and Sage were going through at the time in real life…those personal struggles really come through in Sage’s performance, especially when Rocky finally chases after Robert and they have their heart to heart. Yes, the weakest element of the film is the soundtrack…the New Jack sound that it adopts has not aged well at all. Thank God for that workprint version that uses (mostly) tracks from the previous films.

Interesting video and I agree with you on a number of points, but I don't agree on the overall product, it's bad, really bad, it does feel to me like there is missing footage, it's choppy in some sequences giving it an incomplete feel. I agree with all your negatives but I've got to add another and it's the fight at the end, we're told Rocky could suffer permanent brain damage if he fights again and we see how bad his condition is when it flares up just for chasing Tommy's car down the street, and so he has the fight, bare knuckle as wel so a lot more dangerous, we see he suffers a lot of punishment in the fight, but by the end, nah he's good, no problems here! It feels off, I get why they didn't want to go with a downer ending, but they shouldn't introduce it and note such possible severity with it and then they just chicken out and abandon it by the end.

I think what I like the least with this movie is the fact that Tommy Gunn is such an asshole, I dunno, pisses me off every time. But there are lots of interesting parts in there.

Someone defending Rocky V. Yes as a kid this was my favorite Rocky movie and to be honest it's now on the lower end of all the franchise movies but I still love this movie. Once I see Creed 3 I can't wait to do my re ranking. Also I have a ranking of all Rocky/Creed characters & George Washington Duke I have as #6. Finally I agree with you that this movie sets up the phenomenal later movies to come so it was needed.

I 100% agree. I remember seeing Rocky V in theaters when it released and was highly disappointed. Saw it again a few years ago and thought "damn, this really isn't as bad as I remember. In fact, it's pretty good all things considered". Is it the weakest in the series? Undoubtedly, but weakest doesn't mean bad.

Yes… Thank you, I don’t understand why this movie is so hated. I do enjoy Rocky 5 and it is completely underrated.

The biggest problem with a film is that the plot doesn't make a lot of sense at first but overall I do feel the film is underrated as well.

It’s the worst of the series. But! I can still watch it to this day. It was the first one I went to the theater to see with one of my uncles. I also have stated that we don’t get Rocky Balboa without 5

The ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on Tommy Morrison is sad but a great watch. He was on his way to going toe to toe with Tyson.

I have always loved this film. Got made fun of for it. Saw this with my dad in theaters. Good memories. Love to see that alternate cut cleaned up that’s floating around.

I totally agree with you, but Rocky him self hates this movie 🍿🎥

Cody, have you seen Avildsen's workprint cut? It is quite a bit better and does remove all the 90s hip hop music. Not sure if he was trying to claim that the hip hop music wasnt his idea.

I do know rocky v was supposed to be a very different movie from what we got due to the studio getting involved. So maybe Stallone will clear that up wit a directors cut. Let's hope we get that one day.

A recut of Rocky 5 would definitely be nice but I really don’t think Stallone would do it because his son Sage who was in Rocky 5 has sadly passed away and I think it would be too painful for him to do that.

Hopefully sly is doing a recut. I'll be there
