CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) wants to fight again, but Mickey (Burgess Meredith) tells him that he doesn't have it in him anymore.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
By concentrating on character development with this first of several sequels to his Oscar-winning smash Rocky (1976), writer/director Sylvester Stallone earned critical praise that would desert him with the boxing saga's shallower subsequent chapters. Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia prize fighter enjoying his brief fame after nearly defeating world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). When Rocky is offered lucrative product endorsement opportunities, his limited education and lack of sophistication quickly become an impediment to his future success, causing him embarrassment and his pregnant wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), a great deal of financial concern. Meanwhile, Creed is brooding over his near loss to a fighter he considers an amateur far beneath him and decides to goad a reluctant Rocky into a high-profile rematch. With the family resources dwindling and his pride wounded, Rocky decides that fighting is all he knows and makes the fateful decision to climb back into the ring once more with Creed to vie for the championship belt, despite assurances from all concerned that he will blind himself irreparably.

The thing about the character of Mickey was that he was a lifer in boxing. It was established in the first movie that Mickey had seen it all from both a fighter and a trainer’s perspective. He had probably seen many fighters who were past it get badly hurt trying to hang on or get one more payday- and he knew the damage fighters take fight after fight. He himself had been pretty badly hurt in his fighting days- he told Rocky the story of how one opponent punched literal holes in his face because the guys gloves were doctored. Mickey had seen the beating Rocky took from Creed up close, and he knew that fighters like Rocky that have a ton of heart but not a lot of pure ability always get hurt against guys like Creed, who was the champion for a reason- he was the best in the world, period. Rocky looked to Mickey like a father, and you can see how hurt he is that Mickey doesn’t seem to have faith in him but it’s really Mickey having to give him a hard dose of reality- like a father would a son he loves and wants to protect. The chemistry and acting ability that Stallone and Meredith brought to these two characters and their relationship was incredible, and in many ways it’s the very heart of the first three movies, in some ways even more than Rocky and Adrian. Rocky was the son Mickey never had, and Mickey the father Rocky never had. Watching the relationship develop and grow from frustration and anger at each other to that bond was Stallone’s best writing. Stallone always has great ideas and writing, but so many wind up on the cutting room floor. Watch the deleted scenes from any of his Rocky and Rambo movies and you wind up saying, WHY didn’t he leave that in? Even the Creed movies- his deleted stuff is poignant and adds so much to the story, but it’s like Stallone cuts it to put in the rah rah crowd cheering scenes because he has an eye on the box office. It’s good finAncially, but it’s a loss to reputation, because Stallone would be known differently if he just trusted himself artistically more

As well as all the obviously amazing stuff in this scene, I love how much respect Mickey is showing Apollo, that because of Rocky’s weakness, he isn’t gonna go toe to to with him again, Apollo would batter him. Just a few small lines and it makes Creed out to be even more dangerous than the first film.

Another great scene from the rocky movies. It's great and very sad, you really feel sorry for rocky for not accepting at first what mickey tell him. But after he slap him he understand that maybe it's over and he can't fight no more . Mickey on the other hand tell rocky the brutal "truth" and he does it in a very painfull way . I think Mickey just wanted rocky to be healthy and take care of him . He knew it will be a hard fight and thats why he tells him those things in a very brutal way . Great scene ( one of the best for me ) from two great actors .

This is actually really solid. Several great scenes in the seond with great motivations. Micky is doing what all good managers do, protecting their fighter. They went with the hollywood ending and continued with the series but a way to make it worthy of the first best picture would be to have happen exactly what Mick said would happen. Much more realistic and less cheap.
@scottaznavourian3720

The fact is everything mickey said would happen in the rematch did happen Rocky was off...just as much because of his timing because of arldrian being in a coma as well as his bad eye....and Apollo beat the snot out of him worse then the first time....but the one line we overlook is 'yo got the heart' because other then the first fight with clubber you'd pretty much not only have to blind rocky but kill him to knock him out...

It's funny, both fighter's trainers were trying to discourage their guys from getting back in the ring with each other and for similar but different reasons. Duke to protect Apollo's undefeated record from a never-back-down brawler like Rocky. Mickey to protect Rocky from himself.

Biggest hole in the Rocky story. His eye was all but done, but yet even after he learns to fight right-handed, he still blocks punches with his face the entire fight and then goes on to fight tougher guys such as Mr. T (Clubber), Drago,!Tommy Gunn in a bare knuckle match, and Mason Dixon when He was like 55, and does it all left-handed while He continues to catch punches with his face and somehow His eye was never an issue. Luv the movies and I realize it's fictional but with a director as authentic as Stallone, where did that story go?

pretty much rocky becomes an unaging boxing god that gets better with age... before 30 lost 20 fights to bums... at 30 goes the distance against UNDEFEATED champ then beats him later beats a russian military killing machine by head butting his fists at 40 then going the distance at 60 against the champ in rocky balboa
