Rocky Marciano defended his title only 6 times. Twice against former Middleweight Ezzard Charles, Once against aging former light heavyweight Archie Moore, Once against the man he took the title from 39 year old Jersey Joe Walcott, Once against Britain's Don Cockell and once against some other fight I don't know the name of. Who were the 43 previous opponents he fought before he won the title and padded up his record ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmmYgaSipKekbJo

Rex Layne was a top heavyweight at that time. Awkward fighter, yet very well skilled, had heart and talent. Rex Layne beat Jersey Joe Walcott. He also beat the hard punching Bob Satterfield in a very exciting fight. Just to name a couple of excellent boxers he beat. One of the best heavyweight contenders back then, Rex Layne. Exciting fighter in the boxing ring.

@@MaximusWolfe Well put. I think he mainly meant he was a small fighter. His skill is VASTLY underrated, despite being in the GOAT lists. Rocky made great fighters look bad. Why you may ask? It's because they didn't know how to handle him. Rocky had an awkward fighting style and when they first got hit by him they realized this guy could hit HARD. His punching power made them not only respect him but made them fear him too. So they became very cautious and guarded which didn't allow them to use their usual fighting style. Rocky never went backwards. He was always moving foreword and didn't mind getting hit 3 times if he could hit his opponent once. He could also take a punch and never stopped throwing punches. He had exceptional endurance. Rocky threw punches from all angles until he just overwhelmed them. As nice as he was before and after the fight, when the fight was on he tried taking your head off from the first to the last round.

He collapses because he got hit with a tremendous right hand they clash but layne had no answer for the right hand that put him out. Wasn't fixed nobody took a dive if that's the case then rocky would never gotten the victories he did against the level of competition that he faced . For 10+ years Jim Cushman has described Marciano as being so ferocious that he basically killed all 49 of his opponents in the ring. Cushman writes, "Rocky almost killed Carmine Vingo." Well Mancini 'killed' Kim, but nobody constantly brags about that like Jim does with Vingo. Cushman has all these Marciano vids completely saturated with all his exaggerated hyperbolic comments about Rocky's power and those 13 forced retirements. What Cushman fails to tell everyone is that LaStarza (with all his "Broken Bones" and "Ruptured Blood Vessels") simply had minor surgery and was fightin exactly 6 months later. Rex Layne only sustained four (4) broken teeth (wiki) and was fightin exactly 3 months later. Tell EVERYONE exactly who's bones little Rocky broke Jimbo?? WAITING---TIC-TOC-TIC-TOC-TIC-TOC ...THE CORRECT ANSWER IS NOBODY!!! LaStarza had tiny miniscule bone chips removed from his elbow just like David Tua did after his fight against Ibeabuchi, which were all normal boxing injuries. Also, Cushman fails to ever mention Marciano's FORCED retirement. Why? Because Marciano couldn't take the pain anymore from two confirmed nose surgeries, hand surgery, hundreds of stitches, chronic back pain and constant migraines cause his head was used as a Pinata constantly gettin smacked around, here, you hit me five times, and I'll hit you back one time, Duh. Marciano was POUNDED into retirement and was FORCED TO QUIT during his PRIME. And all that talk about retiring for his family nonsense was simply a bull•••• publicity stunt because he immediately abandoned his family and left them penniless when he perished.
@Jabbing_Jack
@Jabbing_Jack 2 жыл бұрын
Rocky's numbers may not lie, but numbers minus context can easily lead to distortion. So let's examine his 13 opponents that he supposedly forced into retirement instantaneously: First, we know for certainty why Joe Louis retired. Joe was only back because the IRS forced him to, and as soon as they took his purse for fighting Rocky, he was out of there for good. We also know why Walcott retired. Jersey Joe retired because he was old and ready for retirement. He only returned for Marciano-2 because of that Huge $250,000 payday. Marciano only received $166,000. Walcott received the lions share both fights. Had Walcott continued fighting he would have only received a fraction of that. He had no choice but to retire. 250K back then is $2.6 million today. Rocky never retired Joe, he 'QUIT' Lee Savold age was 36 with 153 bouts. His manager, Bill Daily, asked referee Pete Tomasso to stop the uneven match at the end of the sixth round. "The will was there but not the body," said Daily. "I'm going to advise Lee to retire Tomorrow." Savold didn't even throw a punch at Rocky. He basically stood there like a washed-up has-been punching bag. Lee was only there for his last Big paycheck. Lee Epperson and Jimmy Weeks were both Debuting with 0-0-0 records when they faced Rocky. Pathetic to even count these as forced retirements. What a Shame. John Edwards only had 2 fights, a win and a loss, when he faced Marciano. Y'all gonna count this one also? How Embarrassing. Obese 254 lb Humphrey Jackson was a lousy 4-2 journeymen when he faced Marciano. He never beat a winning fighter. It only took 0:34 seconds for Humphrey to be KO'd in his first fight, and 1:28 in his last fight. The less said about bummy Jackson the better. Disgraceful. Jimmy Evans was 18-7 journeyman in a five year career when he quit. Sad. Harry Haft was 12-7 journeymen when he took on Marciano. Shake my head. Gino Buonvino was 22-11 with an 8 year journeymen career. Smh. Eldridge Eastman was 21-20, with a 12 year journeymen career when he fought Rocky. Unbelievable (12 year 50/50 record) SMH. Pete Louthis was 35-12 when he fought Rocky - His record was pretty good. This was probably a legitimate retirement due to Marciano. Carmine Vingo was 16-1, and the only medically confirmed legitimate retirement due to Marciano. Carmine ended up partially paralyzed but ended up living a long (86 years) happy life. It appears that the majority had lousy journeyman records and simply QUIT (unless you can produce more medical documentation similar to Vingo's). There may have been other reasons like taking too many other previous beatings for such low pay, but you decide. Anyhow if y'all wanna continue spreading fictional fabricated exaggerated hyperbolic delusional bull••••, go ahead if it makes u feel better about yourself.

Today's Super Heavyweight boxers average size = 6' 5" 252 lbs 79" reach. Marciano was only 5' 10" 185 lbs with the shortest ever 67" reach. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt and increase his weight up to 205 pounds. Still wouldn't help. Just can't see it. Ain't no way Rocky's taking out these modern 6' 5" 250 lb Super Heavyweights with excellent records. He'd still need the use of a stepladder inorder to reach King Fury. And modern training, nutrition and roids ain't gonna help little Rocky's T-rex alligator arms grow longer? Besides, if ya put an additional 20+ pounds on Marciano he woulda moved slower than molasses. Rocky wasn't born with fast twitch muscle fibers like Mike Tyson. Mike was genetically gifted with fast fibers and came out the gate sprinting like a 220 pound Quarter Horse. While 188 pound Marciano always came out the gate shuffling forward like a turtle. Prime Tyson KO's prime Marciano 10 out of 10 times. Maybe Marciano could have beaten that circus clown Jess Willard who was paraded around for 4 years without a single fight. Or maybe he could have even beat that other circus clown Primo Carnera who was daily alcoholic (like Andre the Giant) and 100% mafioso controlled. The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission. Even the majority of Marciano's 43 KO's came against lousy light heavyweight Journeymen which makes his power questionable.

Marciano's 185 lb punching power doesn't come close to a 245 to 275 lb Ibeabuchi, Lewis, Vitali, Foreman or Fury type of Heavier Weighted Power which effortlessly produces more torque and leverage. If u had to break up large boulder would u use 8oz ball peen hammer or 8 lb sledgehammer? Size matters otherwise boxing wouldn't have 18 different weight classes. Featherweights would be fightin middleweights and cruisers would be fightin Super Heavies. There are no height divisions, age divisions or reach division, because weight at heavyweight boxing is one of the most important factor. Super Heavyweights are increasing because Eastern European fighters are now allowed to fight in the USA since around 2000 (Hall of Fame Klitschko brothers dominated Heavyweight boxing for TWENTY years) and international travel is much easier compared to 30 40 50 years ago. Even a new Bridgerweight division between 200 and 224 lbs was recently added because too many 215 lb heavyweights complained. There is no more 175 to 200 lb old school cruiserweights for Ali to pick on and belittle anymore. We'll never see 185 pounders Ezzard Charles, Rocky Marciano and Floyd Patterson as heavyweight champions again. Boxing has evolved, PROVEN QUALITY SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT SIZE MATTERS, like it or not.

They were court-martialed and convicted after which Marciano was dishonorably discharged from the Army and sentenced to three years in prison. +pussie killer I am a Marciano aficionado. I was looking 4 a rare overachiever in this sport. Rocky is a rare, significant story. U will find no one with more courage, determination to win, who worked harder, was more disciplined to his profession, with less skill than Rocco Francis Marchegiano. He wanted to be a big achiever in something. His choice was baseball, but he failed to make it. He latched onto boxing as his only hope. His effort was truly Spartan. He, with the power of his attitude & immense hard work, developed incredible stamina & would never give up. I am not saying he is the greatest boxer, but he was a tremendous achiever. I like to imagine seeing him live.

People want to say Marciano was too small, fought bums and old men. They say the guys in the 60's would whip him. I say bunk! Marciano beat Layne who was a bigger man and a good fighter. Rex Layne beat Bob Satterfield. Satterfield was 6'2" which is a tall fellow. But this big fellow was ko'd by Layne, and also by supposedly small Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore. But here's something interesting: Bob Satterfield ko'd the extremely hard hitting and big, tall Cleveland Williams. And as we all know, Ali knocked out Williams. Williams got a title shot at Ali, but couldn't get highly ranked in Marciano's day because he couldn't get by Satterfield. Kinda destroys the argument that Marciano couldn't beat the heavies of Ali's day because they were all so great and superior. But Williams is the link between them. By the way, Williams is in fact considered to be a great heavyweight. George Foreman even said how hard he hit. My question is how come they never accuse Ali of beating an old man when he beat Williams? Anyhow, all these men were great fighters and we can take nothing away from their accomplishments and skills. But don't ever let anyone tell you that Marciano was not a great fighter. He could have fought in any era. My point: The big and tall guys couldn't get by the average size guys in Marciano's time. That's why you never hear about them. Just enjoy the fighters of each era. Stop making silly comparisons about height and weight, and quit trying to demean what Rocky Marciano did.

Your argument is a house of cards. Satterfield was supposed to fight a guy named Charley Doc Williams but Doc went missing before the fight so the 20 year old Cleveland Williams was brought in as a last minute replacement probably in hopes that the same last name would fool the ticket buying public. In 1964 Cleveland got shot by a cop and lost a kidney a couple of yards of intestine and had nerve damage. His manager loaned him the money for his hospital bills and recouped it by coming up with that sham fight against Ali in 1967. Williams was unranked when he fought Ali he beat 4 bums after getting out of the hospital. While I agree that it's unfortunate that no one knows about the fiction of Ali's victory over Cleveland Williams it still doesn't make your argument factual.

At the time of his devastating KO by Satterfield, Williams was unranked. In fact, Williams would not even be ranked until 1961, 6 years after Marciano's last fight. To even imply that Williams had anything to do with Rocky's retirement is laughable.

A lot of his early fights were against fighters with losing records and some you cant find a lot of information on. Did he have one of the greatest careers ? YES Absolutely but retiring undefeated doesn't make you the greatest ever. Why are fighters like Dempsey, Johnson, & Marciano protected when it comes to there opposition ? Joe Walcott turned Pro in 1930, Archie Moore in in 1935, Ezzard Charles in 1940. Sure they were all good fighters. These guys were fighting Rocky in 1952,54,56. Point being they were on the backside of there careers Roland LaStraza is the only common opponent he defended against as far as a fighter that was young and up and coming. Kinda like when Holifield defended against Foreman and Holmes back in the early 90's. They were still good fighters but not in there primes. There were better fighters out there like Lewis,Bowe, Tyson. Holifield would eventually fight all of them but what if he had retired after only facing the older guys ? For me, at the elite level of fighters and their greatness, the wins and losses start to take a backseat to the considerations of how styles and attributes such as size and weight, match up. Rocky was a small heavyweight but he hit like a super HW. Some of Rocky's best work for projections and speculation of how he'd match up vs other era fighters is his fight vs Charles, even though there were better ages of Charles 4+ yrs ago- Charles at 32 yrs old vs Rocky is still informative. We can stretch the analysis to include things he did vs Walcott even though Walcott was not at the level he was at as a 33yr old vs Louis.

ugly part of boxing when you see a boxer knocked unconscious as in this fight

I'll tell you this to see how this highlighted vid has over 1k in comments? Every highlighted vid of him and louis is this way In full matches of both the comments aren't close to that they are like in the low hundreds coincidence? No Well cause in those matches shows the real way they fought like my video shows every flaw and outdated techniques him and his whole era had and they aren't impressed by it I even just seen 2 days ago the video of Ray in his prime vs sam,on forums they have always said if we had more video of him in his prime,so why is it that video i seen of him in his prime isn't all chopped up of best moments like the highlights have and hace the same amount of comments? It's cause that vid in his prime just like the full or semi rounds we have in his old version shows mutiple outdated techniques and flaws and they aren't impressed by it

these are the average 70s fighter Advances in angles/tech/timing/fluidity Webner able to punch from range was sloopy but didn't have to stop fully just to punch,able to move forward double up on the inside while using mutiple angles randomly Chuck webar able to come forward while keeping his guard up doesn't just waste many punches,seems to in his Match to not be very uncertain as the pre 60s era like alot were then Rich fought ali doesn't waste many shots coming forward,able to agian like chuck was moving forward keeping hands up smoothly,doesn't look uncertain like they did pre 60s era able to punch from range smoothly with 1 hand and back up very quickly to his position Rich able to back up smoothly not as easy to read,picks shots from range,has good timing at times from range smoothly Terry who fought foreman,terry did these things very good at fighting from range smoothly,able to keep both hands up while moving back very smoothly,agian doesn't look uncertain,throws mutiple shots from different angles while moving forward or back,terry good at picking shots from range in the style of ali at times Duane fought Norton,able to keep hands 1 hand up while moving back and able to punch with the other,able to agian not stop fully just to throw shots off as they did most the time pre 60s,able to throw random shots agian like the others that aren't easy to read,moves back lateral,doesn't waste many shots,able to on the inside be able to punch from a standing up position then switch quickly to a crunch to a body shot back up to the starting up position 30s-40s very over extending alot of times to the body and are very hesitant in most movements they dont fight from range much,they leave themselves open alot alot of times will just throw to the body and not protect themselves they use mostly counters when up close,the lateral movement is very basic they dont seem to be able to punch from range while doing it smoothly they have to stop then punch most the time and their feet are mostly tiptoeing, missing mutiple angles the average 70s fighter used,timing isn't that great,very stiff and slow movements

layne could have been a better boxer then he was, poor handlers , poor training , and lack of defense, as is the case with many young boxers used by there managers, then discarded when they can't be used anymore

Looks like Rocky, love to punish his Opponents in the ring. Instead, of Just knocking them out in the First, or second round. Why? For What for! Well, I got to thinking That it was for the love of boxing, And being there in the ring. That's All.
