Thank you very much, for this recording. It's a really great experience to learn about the father of modern philosophy and mathematics from a renowned historian & philosopher as Will Durant. I'm learning about Descartes, Kant and other Occidental philosophers to supplement my studies in Sociology and other social sciences. Please keep posting such invaluable stuff. We learn and teach, therefore we are. 😊

If you are into sociology check out Raymond Aaron's work on the matter. Unfortunately, Durant is not so well versed as he seems. Montesquieu and de Tocqueville are pioneers in sociology, geography, ethnography. Durant erroneously does not cover these two giants, perhaps his bias for Dewey and Spencer is more telling. Also.check out the work of Erich Fromm and Pierre Bourdieu. And lastly, it has been well established Machiavelli initiated the trajectory of modern philosophy away from the ancients. Followed by Bacon and Montaigne, culminating in Descartes and Hobbes. Cheers.

What universities accept Descartes' philosophy?s. Many subsequent philosophers started from the cogito, but they criticized it and went in radically different direction His physics has no empty space: hence, all those vortexes. Newtonian physics was far superior. You would be better to listen to Bryan Magee and Bernard Williams discussing Descartes, also on YT.

GreenDemon125 Will Durant was the author. A lot of the ones which are profiles of Philosophers can be found in his book “The Story of Philosophy”, one of my favorite books, especially the chapters on Spinoza, Kant, Schopenhauer, and Bergson.

Amazing how it’s clear that Descartes preferred solitude, had his peak experiences by locking himself up and thinking,widely recognised as meditation,yet the sheer arrogance that comes from racism and religious bigotry, his great observation has not led to people flocking to advaita Upanishads. I am sure decades more may be wasted on what is consciousness and it’s central role in human development. Sad.

One philosophy professor pointed out to me Descartes was not at all mystical Most think his famous dreams were in a stove heated room. Have you ever read about his dreams? They are described in Maritain's book, among others.
