Will Durant - and Santayana - represent the apex of literacy often forgot so soon. Ironic to be reminded of them in this forum, but thank you!

[“The fact of having been born is a bad augury for immortality.” The only immortality that will interest him is that which Spinoza describes.] Santayana began as a poet-as Plato before him-it is no surprise that he is more pleasurable to read than the majority of other philosophers.

Christopher Hitchens used to steal that line

@@pliantgraymattersociety7233 It is a good line. Hitchens is my "minister," but, sadly, he recommended not voting for Hillary "because it won't make any difference." Well, you know about catholicism's place on the Supreme Court today; we're at 417 ppm CO2 and climbing without pause. The Arctic Ocean loses much of its ice cover sooner and sooner in summer, causing less solar energy to reflect back into space while the ocean absorbs more radion. And Trump called all of this a "hoax." So it goes. I am a Santayana fan.

An aa erican walter pater. Philosophy in america after the war is still wholly in hoc to european tradition and forms. Mostly of little value like quinean metaphysics (lol).
