There is much preparation in building a custom rod as you know, teaching yourself to layout the guides and plaining colors is important before you start. You are definitely telling novice builders how to fix up mistakes but I would rather teach them how to layout a build and practice on a piece of old rod or dowel. Just my thought on the aproach.

I can respect that opinion. I also know there are two extreme ends of the spectrum, those who plan and those fly by the seat of their pants 😁 I fall somewhere in between so I can relate to both sides. I mentioned in the video I had ran into the same types of problems myself when I first started and that is how I knew some workarounds. If I'm able to help someone out and they stick with it, they will learn to anticipate those things in the future. I want people to stay in the hobby so I'm always happy to help. I can also say with 100% certainty that I've learned more from mistakes than I've ever learned from successes. That is across the board with everything in life, not just rod building 👍 If someone made a mistake and tries to fix it, that tells me something about who they are and I can respect that!

@@TheFishingHobby Certainly that is true in everything in life. A person that says he makes no mistakes is not telling the truth or doesn't do anything. I made my share of mistakes and learned to slow down and study a little. But that is my experience in 73 years. You have a good grip on teaching others, I hope you don't misunderstand my comment.

Not at all and I don't disagree with you either! I pinned it to the top of the comments because I think that is an important point to bring up. There is no substitute for planning things out. Even still, being able to adapt when the plan isn't working out the way you hoped is a good thing to be able to do too! Now, if I change my mind, I just undo my wrap and start over but I definitely remember getting a good wrap on was tough in the beginning so if I wanted to add something, this is how I'd do that. Practice is definitely the key to getting to a point where starting over isn't a traumatic experience 😆

@@TheFishingHobby i first want to thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us noobs. i am new to the hobby and am working on my first rod. It is a spinner with a split grip. When i was prepping the blank i accidentally went past where the butt grip starts. It is going to be visible when finished. My question is , can i wrap in between the winding checks and finish it just like a guide?

Sure! As long as you are happy with how it looks, it won't hurt anything at all. Good luck!

No, but it is a pretty popular thing to do 🤷♂️

@Jose Garcia Looks fine to me. It was recorded in 1080 60fps. Sometimes KZbin defaults to a lower resolution. Take a look at the settings for the video in KZbin and make sure it is set to 1080 and not a lower quality setting.
