Here is a way to do a guide wrap I never really explained that was in a thumbnail for a video I did previously about making furled thread for decorative trim bands or wraps. I thought this look was very nice and worth making a video about. It is an easy technique and produces a unique decorative wrap. You can make the Helix pattern longer by not twisting the threads together as much. More twists make for a tighter helix. I hope everyone enjoys the video and happy rod building!

You're a great person and your ideas have helped me a lot.Your method of wrapping is appropriate for people who do it as a hobby . I believe that most people who follow videos like these make one or two fishing rods, and complicated videos with expensive and unnecessary machines are a real waste of time. In any case, great respect for you and your approach to work.

Thank you, I really appreciate you letting me know what you think about what I'm doing with my channel! If someone is just building a few rods a year, they do not need a power wrapper. I know some people use them for turning the grips, but a small wood lathe would actually be cheaper than a power wrapper and is better suited for the job too.

I came across ur video great job and thanks for posting. I recently started rod making I am in my 2nd year. I only make ice rods right now but started twisting 2 size A threads and use that on the guides. I am curious why it’s not as structurally strong
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby Жыл бұрын
It probably is just as strong if done properly. The individual colors of thread are twisted strands anyway. What I was actually referring to and didn't make clear was how you stop and start the thread. Either way works fine on trim bands but it gets a little iffy if you transition from one thread to another on a guide itself. There is more room for error when you have multiple stopping and starting points (tag ends/pull throughs) on the guide area of the wrap. I hope that makes sense. If I wanted to do a decorative wrap on the guide foot, I'd go with twisting the second color as you go along the wrap in the guide foot area instead of stopping the primary wrap and introducing a second pretwisted strand and terminating it and moving back to the primary color further down the line. Those pull throughs are areas that are more likely to come loose if not done perfectly.

Do you have any ideas on how someone could do this helix wrap with silk thread for clear wraps...leaving the colored thread tagless?
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 2 жыл бұрын
I have actually thought about trying that before. If I were to try it, I would use a small dot of super glue to hold the tag ends of a metallic or color protected thread to the blank. The super glue would dry clear. It would be a little tedious to get right, but it would be interesting to see how it would come out in my opinion.

@@TheFishingHobby I should add that the only things I would worry about are the super glue finishing clear and air bubbles from wrapping the thread.
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 2 жыл бұрын
@@rhodesianhunter9360 the super glue will dry clear as long as it is put on in a low humidity environment from my experience. I've actually used it before to start a wrap. For the clear wrap (natural silk) you can minimize bubbles by using a slightly looser wrap. I did a video where I talked about that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKC9Y3ygmrJ4qbc Also, applying the epoxy with as few bubbles as possible helps. This is how I personally do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnrEf4SsdralbMk

Well I usually use my fingernails in all honesty. I have some stainless steel tools that were made for people working with clay and also some plastic clay working tools. I got those sets at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. I also have used some aluminum knitting needles and they work well too. Whatever you use, just make sure it has smooth edges and isn't sharp so you don't damage your thread. Please feel free to contact me thefishinghobby@gmail.com if you have any questions. I'm always happy to try and help if I can. I try to answer questions in the comments section of my videos too. If you need to send pictures or something more complicated, email would be best. I'm not using rod building thread here. I'm actually using machine embroidery thread made by Coats and Clark. You can find it at places like Walmart and sewing supply stores. It is slightly smaller in diameter than size A rod building thread.

@@TheFishingHobby do you have to use color preserver on that thread?
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 3 жыл бұрын
I do. The metallic thread doesn't need it, but the machine embroidery thread does need it just in case there is any silicone on the thread. I just use mod podge as a color preserver. 2 coats works great.

It is an old fiberglass blank. I'm not sure of the manufacturer. I like fishing with fiberglass rods, so I strip and rebuild a lot of older ones. I found the one in this video as an unbuilt blank at a flea market and picked it up for $1!!!
