A wonderful close up and personal interview. No audience to play up to, no questions pre-written on paper and resting on the knee to work down one by one. Just a fluid, warm conversation between two people. Rod Hull seems like a totally different person without his 'sidekick'. A fascinating man, and a fellow pipe smoker that I would have loved to sit and share a bowl with along with a few drinks. He is still missed by the people that grew up watching him. This interview shows just how sad a loss he was to the world.

Great, almost all tv interviews in the UK were like this in the 70s - no constant interupting, no gags or gimmicks, no smug interviewer. The guest was allowed to talk and talk and open up. Brilliant.

@@undercoverhamster2549 I think it's a pretty darn certain that people who once lived, like everything in the universe which once existed but no longer does, can't see whats written in comments on a youtube page on one handset out of the billions on the planet.. Imagine the tedium if u could, all those millions of random, pointless messages.. Lol.. Going on that assumption then it goes that they must also know every line and factual written piece on them in every book ever written, every documentary shown on TV and well, anything that includes their name... And what about all those who share names, do u have to read theirs as well just to make sure its not urs or does some universal fact checker assign each comment, message and article to each specific person.. Imagine being rod Hull from Essex, a comment start the late great Rod Hull, old mateys ears from Essex pop up... The message continues, such a great talent (Essex rod now knows what's coming but stays hopeful) he knew how to make that bird seem real... Essex rod sinks in his ethereal chair and sighs, it's that bloody puppeteer again.. When someone gonna mention me ffs.. Lol Yea, so er, pretty convinced old Rod Hull (not the Essex one, sorry pal to got ur hopes up again) can't hear messages on phones in the comment section of youtube... Lol... But if he could.. What a tedious eternity.. I can see some kind of envy occurring, just thinking of that obscure named person who shares his moniker with a much thought about celeb version...lol Cynical?? Yep, but then that's the world we experience.... For a short time.. Anyway. And no disrespect to u my friend, I'm just having a laugh with u. All the best.

I am now grasping why in spite of not being stereotypically handsome, according to several accounts the women were round him like bees to a honeypot. He naturally creates an intimacy when he talks. That quiet whispery voice etc + a kind of John Pilgeresque ravaged intellectual appeal.

Rod Hull spent 15 years working and living in Australia from 1956, the year television launched in Australia. I do noticed a tiny hint of Australian accent in his speech. Very slight and unnoticeable to some.

As a child of the 70's I could never stand the "act", but it is a pleasure to discover the man behind the act...clearly a thoughtful man, an intelligent man. Someone I can empathise with. What a treat discovering this interview. Of course I looked up Rod's bio on wiki after, and I was shocked to discover he was "only" 63 when he died; I would have guessed he was older than that, and indeed, he looks much older than 41/42 in this interview. Fantastic- renewed my faith in youtube.

Ah back in the day when people actually spoke to each other and told stories, before the scourge of the social media distancing, when even Rod Hull (no offence - but he was considered a clown act) nevertheless spoke more eloquently, more compassionately and more truthfully than most people can today. Makes you think (or else if it doesn't then it should!).

_At least two people have publicly reported Hull's sexual assault of women using Emu as a cover. Darts champion Eric Bristow wrote: ‘He used the puppet to feel up women and stick his hand between people's legs.’ In a 2007 interview with Chortle, the late veteran comedy producer Michael Hurll said to Hull: 'Look Rod, you’ve got your hand in that emu, up girls’ skirts and squeezing their tlt$; doing things you would get locked up for.'_
