Rodney Stephen Hull (13 August 1935 - 17 March 1999) was a British comedian and popular entertainer on television in the 1970s and 1980s. He rarely appeared without Emu, a mute, highly aggressive arm-length puppet modelled on the Australian flightless emu bird.

Rod Hull is one of my heroes. 1979, he spent his Christmas Day morning phoning my nine year old sister, Claire. Someone told him she was dying of cancer and she had her own emu. He was so kind. She died on 6th January and was cremated with her emu. I have a recording of the call but too upsetting to listen to. He was a wonderfully kind and funny man.

In 1977, when I was 19, I was walking along Oxford Road in Manchester going to an interview at the NCC, next door to the BBC Manchester studios, and was very nervous about my chances of passing the interview. Suddenly, Rod was walking towards me and as we passed, Emu struck, savaging my head & neck! I was laughing so much, all my nerves disappeared and I walked the interview. Cheers Rod & Emu, love always.

Emu retired to a beautiful part of Australia and leads a happy and quiet life reminiscing about his zany adventures, and all the famous people he'd attacked; but most of all he lives cherishing the memory of Rod Hull and all the joy and laughter which they brought to so many people.

This took me back I loved Emu. I did a quick search to find out what happened to the bird and found this. "One of Rod Hull's last surviving Emu puppets has gone to live with Orville the Duck and George from Rainbow. The puppet, which was made in the mid-to-late 1980s for TV production company Endemol, was bought at auction by the man behind CBBC's Hacker the Dog, the puppeteer Phil Fletcher." This was dated 31 May 2018 He found a good home at least.

He was very different from his on screen persona: quiet, intelligent and well read: a deep thinker but still with a sense of humour. He is very sadly missed. Oh yeah and i loved him on the telly too! @@UnusualThings1 The story behind the infamous Parkinson scene was told to me by Toby and is typical of Rod. He wanted to go on the show on his own without the puppet. However the production team insisted. There was much more to Rod than Emu and he got frustrated with the puppet sometimes. Anyhow he thought “if they want Emu, they’ll get Emu and then some.” He was pretty pissed off as was Parky at time but it did not do either of them any harm long term. You notice first thing Emu(Rod) goes for is Parkinson’s script. Rod wanted to chat freely.

I remember Rod from his early days in Australian Television. As you mentioned, he was first known as Constable Clot. This was on the show Kaper Kops, which was an homage to the old silent Keystone Cops shorts produced from 1912 to 1917. Rod then took up the position of fictional character Caretaker Clot (Clotty) on the weekday morning children's live television broadcast of The Super Flying Fun Show, which was designed to fill the gaps between cartoons with adverts for breakfast cereal, ice cream, and lots of unhealthy children's snacks, in amongst toy and board game giveaway segments. Everyday, for instance, the host, Miss Marylin (Mayo), and Clotty, would sit down to have breakfast, which would involve Clotty opening a packet of Kellogg's cereal and happily discovering a small plastic toy inside to play with. One day, Rod found the Emu puppet in the props department at channel 9 Sydney, where the show was broadcast from, and the Rod Hull and Emu partnership was born. I have vivid memories of the first time Emu made his debut on the old black and white TV screen. Emu would suddenly pop his head in front of the camera, or around from a corner, and had to be hunted down by Rod, as Clotty, with a large net, because having a wild emu on the loose in the studio was causing everyone from the morning children's show to panic. After Emu was eventually caught, he lived under Clotty's arm for the remainder of Rod's time on the show. In these early days, Emu would mainly attack Rod/Clotty. Emu seemed to become more aggressive to others after Rod had quit the Australian show to make a name for himself in the UK, as Michael Parkinson found out, first hand. Meanwhile, in Australia, Channel 9 replaced Rod with new fictional caretaker Marty (Morten), complete with a newly made Emu puppet to look after. Marty was like the poor man's Rod Hull, and looked and acted nothing like the person he was replacing, apart from getting around with a slightly different looking Emu under his arm. After the children's show was axed in the late 70s, Marty made a modest living for himself touring the Australian club circuit as a stand up comedian and general entertainer with his Emu puppet by his side, but never achieving the fame that Rod went on to enjoy in the UK. There doesn't appear to be any surviving footage of Rod as Caretaker Clot, with or without Emu, mainly due to the live broadcasts not being recorded at the time they were taking place.

One of Rod Hull's last surviving Emu puppets has gone to live with Orville the Duck and George from Rainbow. The puppet, which was made in the mid-to-late 1980s for TV production company Endemol, was bought at auction by the man behind CBBC's Hacker the Dog, the puppeteer Phil Fletcher

There’s something a bit eerie about the thought of the puppets who brought happiness to millions, now stationery, their puppeteers sadly passed just lifeless in a glass case. But seriously, it is good to know that they’re in the hands of someone who appreciates them and looks after them.

That's good to know a puppeteer has Emu and others and maybe lets them occasionally come "alive" every so often. We can hope so.

I saw him one year leading the annual carnival through basingstoke town. Did not see the bird attack anyone. People were behind barriers.

My aunt put Rod Hulll on his backside. We went to Butlin’s one year on Holiday, where Rod Hull was performing. My aunt got dragged up on stage, where Emu tried to look up her dress, big mistake! My aunt didn’t take kindly to this so pushed Rod Hull away, he lost his footing and landed flat on his arse, much to the audiences laughter.

Hey there, you're actually really comfortable in front of the camera, very easy to watch, a natural presenter/speaker. Carrying on filling up the channel with content and I am very sure you'll build into something really popular. Enjoyed this one 👍

Started watching these videos after just stumbling apon them, interesting how some graves of high profile people are just plain & simple & surprisingly looking not well tendered after being buried not that long ago. I was a fan & it's good to see Rod Hull is still remembered, R.I.P

He was well known in the states in the 70s. As you know he was on Johnny Carson but he also appeared on The Smothers Brothers, which was a light entertainment, music, comedy show. Huge show at the time.

The only reason Emu attacked Michael Parkinson was because he wanted to appear on the show without the bird. Even though it was a puppet he made it look real

While working for Cambridge City Council in 1993, I bumped into Rod in the ticket office at Cambridge Corn Exchange (he was appearing in panto there and had just arrived for a stage rehearsal). He had an old battered blue suitcase with him. I looked at him and he twigged that I’d recognised who he was…I looked at the suitcase…I looked back at Rod….and he just nodded…we smiled at each other and never exchanged a word. One of the clearest conversations I’ve ever had in my life.

What a character, he was very funny and emu gave him the ultimate free pass to do some crazy stunts on people! I've always wondered what happened to emu, would have been nice if there was a smaller headstone next to Rods with Emu lay beside him. 👍

😎😎😎 I can see Rod Hull was popular in the UK. He had that weird, idiosyncratic wackyness which made him so endeering. I don't remember him telling gags but he had "funny" in his blood and, for all of his hyper-enerhy, there was never a sense of malice. It was all good, clean, silly fun. RIP Rod.😎😎😎

Hi Paul, I really love watching your programmes. Grew up watching Rod Hull as a child, I did look into what happened to Emu, and the last Emu Rod had was sold at Chippenham Auction rooms by Phil Fletcher, who was famous for his HackerT. Dog a creation for the CBBC. Thanks for the videos. It's really great 👍
