I’m mostly an inshore fisherman (here on Topsail island on the southern NC coast) but I do go out several miles for king mackerel, mahi occasional wahoo and cobia, etc. many times a year, I’ve been doing it more lately. I’ve caught tons of 40+ pound Kings and even several 50+ pound kinds (including a 54 pounder I caught late last summer) on a Penn Senator 112h 3/0...which is the smallest Senator available. I have 340-345 yards of 20 lb mono and 12-18 ft of 40 lb flouro leader. I have 4 3/0 senators on 4 7 ft. 15-30 lb boat/trolling rods by ECS. Caught tons of big mahi, some Cobia and some nice size wahoo as well. If I’m going on a serious king trip then I’m taking my main setup which is 2 Penn Squall 30LD Level Drag reels on 2 7 ft. Star Rods 15-30 lb boat rods...as well as 2 Avet 6:0:1 High Speed reels on 2 7 ft. 17-30 lb Crowder Boat rods. I also have 2 Penn Squall 50 Level Winds that are much larger and hold tons of line, I have each of them on 6’6” Star Rods Aerial Series Boat Rods rated at 30-80 lbs. use those for yellowfin, larger wahoo, med-large sailfish and huge Cobia. Great reels for just $125-$160 dollar range

Dear MR i live in Brasil and here does not has options to see, i fish in Rio de Janeiro and Panamá and take a large Tunas, withe spinning reel, Saragossa 18K and BGMQ 20K is a big reel, but they are very difficult to catch a big tuna more than 200 pounds, I intend to buy The Penn Fhathon II 30 or 40, for usind live bait, i using a litle bonito moer less two pounds, i need to cast 10 to 30 meters back comercial boats, with lever drag reels like phanton i can todo this cast? Thanks!
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge Жыл бұрын
You can still cast the 40 pretty well and it's good for tuna up to about 175 pounds. Bigger than that I woudl use an international 16 or 20.

You think a Squall II 25n star drag would pair well with the Rampage Jigging rod for Calicos and Yellowtail in SD? Would you go Medium or Medium heavy?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 жыл бұрын
Good for jigging yes. But for more all around fishing I wouldn't suggest a jigging rod. They are short and whippy. Get yourself a Carnage™ II Model #CARBWII3080C70. This is a better all around option.

Sorry, I know this is an old video/thread. From the line weights you have given for the spinning reels, it looks like you probably get between 200-250 yards of line on the spools. Is that right and do you have a line capacity number/ range you try to hit?
@LocalKnowledge

WE try to get 300 yards of line on our smaller stuff whenever possible but 250 will also work. Check out www.pennfishing.com and you can find the line capacity for all of their reels.

Those are both solid reels. If you haven’t yet, you might want to give a Penn slammer 6500 or 7500 a try. They are build like tanks and will stop just about any large fish.

Hey Rush I am new to fishing, I was looking at some of the PENN Rods. My question is what does Rod power mean. There is light , medium , medium heavy and heavy. What does that mean?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Daniel, thanks for taking the time to watch. To answer your question, think of the rod power of light, medium, heavy as the spectrum of fish. In this video, I set out examples for each rod and some particular species I would use certain rods for. For example, the first rod and reel combo, i would use for bait fish or small game fish. For the heavy setup I would use for sailfish or even big tuna. Good luck out there!

@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 5 жыл бұрын
@@hlwade No. If you're fishing 30# line for instance, we would use a rod rated at 40-80#. We find the rod ratings from the factory tend to be a little light. We like a slightly heavier rod because the reels have so much drag you can get away with a smaller reel but you still want the lifting power of a slightly heavier rod. Hope that helps.
