Greetings from Edmonton Alberta. Canada. Thank you for that awesome review. I just went to the fishing hole store here in town and purchased this rod.. I'm glad I did! I think I'm going to love it on big Rocky Mountain Bull Trout.

The new series is better than the last, which were some of the worst casting rods I'd ever fished. If you only fish a couple of days a month then they're acceptable. However, if you fish more than that there are much better rods available. For slightly less money, look at Echo or Taylor. The Hardy Shadow rods are in the same class as the Orvis Recon rods, but substantially less expensive. I have picked up Hardy rods for $300 or less and they run circles around the Clearwater. The biggest advantage to the new Clearwater rods is three-fold: if you live near an Orvis store you can walk in and test cast them, you can get them as part of a complete package, and if you break a section Orvis will send out a replacement section. For many people, that might outweigh a better casting rod. Before running out to buy the Orvis look at the Yellowstone Angler rod shootout reviews. These folks do direct comparisons to many rods.

Thanks for the input! I bet anyone out there in the market for an 8 wt will find this useful.

Not sure I will buy one but I will definitely take one out to cast it at my local shop. Ty for the review

I like his enthusiasm for his Clearwater. My 5 wt Recon got stolen in MT, so I bought a 5wt Clearwater at a local fly shop there as a filler, and it did the job quite admirably. It doesn't have the accuracy at short distances that the Recon does, but it got the job done. Couldn't ask for a better budget backup stick👍

I have way too many fly rods. A few manufacturers but mainly all TFOs and Orvis. I do have others but in general I tend ti like them. Personally my favorite is the Axiom 2x anything from 6 to 8 wt. But, after seeing this video I picoed up the 8 wt clearwater. I have many 8wts for carp, bass, reds, and speckled trout. I gotta say I like it more than the Helios 3 and my recon 2. It just feels better to me. Simiar in my memory to one of the green TFO models. I think the signature series. I really liked that rod at one time. I just did an 8wt side by side and it is now my main backup rod over the Helios 3D. It is not as accurate, it is not as light, it doesn't even feel as smooth, or can I cast 8t as far as others. But, for me it just feels better to cast and did easily put line out 75ft. I feel like the my mental work put into the cast is less thoughtful than other rods if that makes sense. So, even with it's faults 75 feet is a decent maximum range while retaining decent accuracy. For me, in practice that is laying the belly of the fly like close to what i was aiming at at X number of feet. Most casts are within 1ft at that range for me. But, I did have more errant casts than other rods. Still, just feels right. I tried wff, sink tip, and full sink. I did not like the feel quite as much with the full sink. Great video and very accurate.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, you said "less thought" and that is a great description of how easy that rod is to lived with all day. Thanks for watching!

🌴So tell me about your older Clearwater, I just bought one for $20 bucks at a local flea market that looks brand new , I wanted something to carry in the truck Incase I get the urge , I figured that if it had the Orvis name on it I couldn’t go wrong , the action on it seems a bit stiff and the rod isn’t a lite weight it does feel substantial, I’ll be looking for a 8-9 wt reel next , this is now my budget rod to see how cheaply I can put a combo together, 🤔

Thanks for watching, Dave! My old school Clearwater 9ft 8wt. Lets just say it gave me my PB snook, LMB, SMB, carp, catfish, redfish, and striper. Lot of years, lot of trips. It is my favorite close in combat style bass and snook rod. When ya got to cast it 30 ft and 10 of that is under over hanging branches and the fly is not small. Compared to todays rods it is slow but that makes it great for loading a rod for short casts, A bass bug taper helps.. Even with my flawed cast timing, I can cast that in wind with big flies for days. However, if ya need to lay out a 70 foot accurate cast to spooky bones in the wind you really want a faster action. That being said I have seen a guide cast mine to the backing and into a small break in the mangroves in high wind...I cannot do that. Great rod for what you want. I would look around for one of those cheap plastic reels and take the savings and put it in the line. Add a spare reel with a sink tip and you are good to go. See you on the river sometime!

@@derekspace thanks for the info , I fish saltwater flats and was looking for a snook and redfish rod and small Tarpon, this rod seems to have plenty of back bone , as for a reel the hunt is half the fun 😄 I’d like to get a 9 wt reel only because of its larger spool capacity, all to often I’ve hooked something and didn’t have enough line ( fly lines are expensive 😳) for what I saved on the rod I’ll probably sink the money into the line and reel , been watching the budget as I’m in process of refurbishing a skiff into a nano flats skiff, 💸💸💸🥴

Quick question.......I am thinking Everglades area for November. Good time/bad time? Thanks for advice I was out years ago in April and it was nice.
@derekspace2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Last Thanksgiving (2021) after the family meal, I started a 9 day Everglades trip and it was very good. Temps were 75 to 80. I did not get rained on once, the skeeters were not bad, and more importantly the fish were biting very well. I'm not that good at the salt yet but even I caught a lot of fish. I did notice the fish were much more active in the afternoon till dark. Seemed like early morning was a waste of time. Yes, definitely go down there November to March. BTW, to see how it was, go to my channel and watch my last series of Everglades videos. I would check the water levels tho. If they have had some late tropical storms and a lot of fresh water is coming in, I don't have as good luck with the saltwater fish. I went there after a big storm in late Nov early Dec 2020 and the peacock bass saved the trip. I think the saltwater fish move closer to the ocean when there is a lot of fresh water. Hope this helps and good luck!!
