How can anyone give this song a thumbs down? Years ago I was at a Rod Stewart concert, and of course, Maggie May was part of the set list. Of course, the audience went crazy as soon as they heard the first few bars. There was a young couple - very early twenties maybe - sitting in front of us. They weren't singing, they just looked at each other. The girl said to the boy "This must be from his new album." I can't imagine anyone going to a Rod Stewart concert and not knowing Maggie May.

My FIRST encounter with this song was as a ten year old youngster in Ohio courtesy of the "Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show" which came on late night on Friday's after the 11:00 news on Channel 8 in Cleveland. They featured "B" movies accompanied with parody's and gags. This was used as "bumper music" coming back from a commercial break and now at the age of fifty four it never get's out of my head.

Today in 1971 {October 2nd} was a very good day for Rod Stewart... For on this day in both the U.S.A. and the United Kingdom his album, "Every Picture Tells A Story", reached #1 {stayed in top spot for 4 weeks on both charts}... And the cherry on top, "Maggie May", a track from the album, also peaked at #1 {for 5 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 Singles chart... Then one week later on October 9th "Maggie May" reached #1 {again for 5 weeks} on the U.K. Singles chart...

Don't tell the nuns!) ) while this song played in the student lounge.....it has been 50 years and while I have no idea where my Maggie is these days, I still love her and this song just reminds me of what it felt like to love that deeply...that feeling that you are going to explode if you don't see her, touch her hand or just hear her voice.....unfortunately it also reminds me of what a moron I was for breaking up with her.....
