Malcolm Arnold : Symphony No. 2 Op. 40 (1953)

Now this has made my evening! A Malcolm Arnold Symphony (for many fans, his finest though my own favourite remains the 5th) with the marvellous Sir Charles Groves at the helm. The emotional range covered is wide and far-reaching : whimsical, mercurial, warm, affectionate, celebratory, sometimes (as in the Lento) even edgy, haunting and slightly sinister......all signposts along one heck of a journey for the human spirit. The composer's orchestral style is, in my opinion, stunningly brilliant and so uniquely his own. I can sense a Malcolm Arnold binge-listen coming on, for me at least! Thanks for a fantastic and very welcome upload.......

I love this too Max and, indeed, the picture shown is actually my own copy as shown on Discogs. Like you, however, the 5th remains my favourite. Arnold's mastery of orchestration is, in my opinion, vastly under-rated.

Good to hear from you, Tony! Hope all's well. I figured it would only be a matter of time before you'd arrive at the recent "Our Malcolm" uploads! I'll be interested to know what you make of the Third.

Hi Max, I've not been online much lately but have been wading through the recent Polish uploads (which I enjoyed). I know the Third through a Naxos recording by the Nat SO of Ireland under Andrew Penny.... VERY Malcolm Arnold :)
