The author, Grahame Greene, divided his fiction into two groupings: (serious) "novels" and (popular) "entertainments". It is possible to apply this categorisation to the music of Shostakovich. This delightful Suite would, no doubt, fall into the popular category. Its broader appeal is evident in its straightforward melodic content and direct rhythmic exuberance.
