Just got the NTG5 in the mail! Here are my first impressions of the mic and I did some tests and comparisons to my Sennheiser MKE 600. The tests were really for me to get to know the characteristics of the mic and I figured I'd include them in this video for everyone. This isn't a detailed thorough review of the mic, but rather a first-impressions (as the title suggests). Honestly don’t know if these tests are even useful haha!

I completely agree about the missing lows and the thin sound from the MKE 600 compared. I made the same switch.

Great review. I shot a feature film with the GH5 and recorded sound with the Sennheiser MKE 600. In post, the sound mixer told the director that they were very impressed with the audio quality of my recordings. Considering I taught myself how to record sound, I took that compliment very seriously. That being said, I really like the audio quality of the NTG5. So much so, that I believe I will make it my next purchase in the area of audio for my films. Thanks for this Tyler. And I needed another excuse to buy more film making equipment.

I just received my NTG5 yesterday. I still haven't done any tests. But, I've seen others test it, and I was impressed with the quality. So I bought it. (EDIT: I like the fact that the NTG5 is a little hotter. I, too, have been using the Sennheiser MKE600. I recorded with it on a feature film last year. It's a good mic. But, I did find myself having to turn up the gain on my Tascam recorder more than I thought necessary. So, having a hotter mic will, as you pointed out, result in less self noise. Great tests, Tyler.)

Is there a mic for a sony camera that I can use that attaches to my camera and then if i wanted to, attach to a boom arm for videos filmed at a desk on a boom arm

Great video. I've been using the Rode video mic pro for years. I have the NTG4 also but my cameras dont have XLR so its been to much hassle to setup the zoom every time. I just want something simple like this for short setup and it looks like it has USB too so that will be nice. Maybe I can get the exact same sound if i decide to voice over a video and the on camera sound. We shale see because I just ordered the NTG5.

when you say you did levels adjustments what did you mean by that? did you compress or set the volume to a certain .db? Also what interface are you attaching the NTG5 to? I bought this mic 2 days ago based off of your video and I loved the sound you are getting here but I am outside trying to achieve that same sound and im getting all types of ambient noise from everywhere. Your audio sounds as if your in a flat room or you added an expander to your audio. It sounds that good!! How did you achieve such a low ambient floor outside like that? Great videos btw keep it up.

I’ve watched till the end and I’m currently deciding between these 2 mics it was nice to stumble into your video. Thank you! Someone correct me if I’m wrong. The bass warmth sound and less hiss sound of the NTG5 is nicer but the sound rejection of the MKE 600 is better and makes it sounds more natural.. I think If you were to buy a 3rd shotgun mic. Would you pick another MKE 600 or a NTG5?

Any opinion with this versus NTG3? For interviews, documentary, budget short film, value and would this work with preamps like saramonic which plug 3.5mm into the camera for run and gun?
@remektekmedia6641

The MKE 600 seemed to have better off axis rejection, plus it can be used with a AA battery for situations when you are plugging into a camera that doesn't offer phantom power.
@TylerEdwards

There are definitely advantages with the MKE 600 over the NTG5. Ultimately, I think the NTG5 sounds better.

Do you think the NTG5 would be the best mic for talking head KZbin videos in a treated 13x9 room? (On boom pole, above head, just out of shot). If not, what would you choose? (MKH 50?)? I have a baritone voice. Thanks!
@TylerEdwards
@TylerEdwards Жыл бұрын
I’ve used it for my talking head videos basically since I got this mic and I think it sounds great! However, if you are dedicating a mic to a studio space, the MKH50 is really hard to beat and if I had the choice, I’d use the 50 for sure.

Nice. I need a real mic that I can use on the Pocket 4k or a boom pole, so this does look good. I'll probably end up with the Deity S-Mic 2s for the price difference.

I've been using the Deity S-Mic 2 for a lot of stuff the last few months. I did some tests with the NTG5 alongside the S-Mic 2 and my Sennheiser K6/ME66 last night. All three are fairly comparable. I think if you're going to be out on location a lot, the NTG5 is a better option because it's MUCH lighter (and will make a massive difference to your arms on the end of a 10ft boompole all day), but if you've usually got a mic mounted from a stand indoors and you don't need the full location kit with the pistol grip then the S-Mic 2 is significantly cheaper.

It's an incredible mic for 380€, with all that stuff included. Isn't that a pretty good deal already? If you're not going to use the pistol grip, it's still a nice extra, no?

Too bad there is no little wind. For me the windshield is proven to be useless. With a small breeze it distorts and adds lots of low rumble in my recordings. I have to invest in a blimp. For that sake Rode could just sell the mic itself without the grip, the foam and windshield and offer it for less.

The NTG-5 sounds way better but the Senheiser rejects wind better. Could just be a better deadcat on it.
