One thing I didn't get to cover in detail but is really nice for podcasters: In the RODE Connect app in combination with the VideoMic GO II, you can use the same processing you can use on the RODECaster Pro. That includes the noise gate, compressor, big bottom, and aural exciter. Pretty impressive for a $99 microphone.

Excellent review, I purchased the NTG and was an excellent mic apart from a static type noise which was such a shame, I even uploaded the latest software but the noise was still auditable, I use a Samsung android phone with a trrs 3.5 cable so I take it I will have to purchase an additional cable?, At present, I use a micro shotgun mic, which does a great job, but I want more reach really for interviews and capturing events. Thanks

Sounds like a great microphone to add to my kit, the price and features are impressive. I recently purchased the NTG5 to use as an overhead boom, and very impressed with it. I have actually started recording videos without lavalier microphones and getting much better audio.

The NTG-5 is absolutely excellent. Sounds great, and extremely lightweight. Not quite as a good at rejecting ambient noises as say a 416, but in about 85% of situations where I'm using a shotgun, I go for the NTG-5 instead of the other mics I have simply due to how light it is.

Wifey at the end had me dying!!! Keep up the good work, Curtis. The only con that I really didn’t like was that the settings on the Rode Central app isn’t saved. The mic is hot on my Panasonic S5. It’s not the mic’s fault, but it could be a nice firmware update.

I just received the Røde WS-12 furry windscreen for this microphone, and with it was a little rubber-ring to cover the output you’re not using: If you use the USB, it can cover the mini-jack socket, if you use the mini-jack, it can cover the USB port. And this might be quite important. Robert Rozak (I hope I spell his name correctly) from Juiced Link had a very interesting video on his now closed KZbin channel where he blew on a microphone through a straw and showed how any crack on the surface of the mic was a potential source of wind noise. His trick was to cover every crack and crevice with tape.

I do not know enough English to write efficiently and I have to use a google translator. Unfortunately. :(. I watch these acoustics lectures with interest. I am grateful to admit that I have supplemented my knowledge of acoustics, sound processing and recording techniques a lot. You can say that I absorb this knowledge like a sponge with water. For 40 years I have been dealing with electronics related to sound, and for 10 years still image, recording and editing films. I must admit that I was pleased because there is a channel in which I can (at no additional cost) draw from the sources of well-prepared knowledge in your performance. You can hear that in the background someone (a woman ) watches over the funds, I know it :) I hope the translation is understandable. Thank you Curtis.

Hi Curtis, I return again, asking your advice. I need a budget microphone, cardioid or supercardioid, for dialog / v-log, that I can use indoor in acoustically untreated room. A lavaliere mic would pick too much noise coming from outdoor/windows as this room sited in busy city-centre. Another limitation is, I need to be 3.5 mm jack (no phantom power). After searching through many videos you have, I think I may find some options. You have two videos, one is about "RODE VideoMic GO II" and another one is about "DEITY V-Mic D4". Now, I have few questions: 1. Do you think such kind of microphones will work well for above described situation? 2. (I prefer Rode for my subjective reasons) - How did you find the output of Rode? Does it have enough gain in term not to raise too much the gain on a camera as Sony A7III? - Supposing I use the app, can I change the gain for the Rode microphone (to preset it) or this is exclusively for USB use? 3. Do you have any other better recommended microphone under €300 or around it? Many thanks!

Always love your reviews Curtis! One thing I've been trying to find out is when using the custom settings through the RODE app, it appears to only be applicable to the USB-C connection into your mobile device or computer. It does not appear to carry the settings over when you use it with your 3.5mm jack to your camera. The ability to adjust these settings to be used on your mirrorless camera would make it more powerful and it would be disappointing to know if it did not have that ability. Given that the Wireless Go ii can carry these settings over and and onto a 3.5mm output, I don't see a reason why it would be an issue as well other than a firmware update. Perhaps using a USB-C from Videomic Go ii to 3.5mm into camera would work?

Seems like the HUGE difference between this and the NTG is the gain control when connected directly to a camera. NTG had it; Go II doesn't at all. I was hoping you could use the app to set the gain and it'd be saved to the mic itself.

Any idea if this would work with the Atomos Ninja V by powering it through a USB power adapter while using the 3.5mm jack for the actual audio output? (after watching the video I'd say yes with maybe line level output?) The Ninja V doesn't supply power through the 3.5mm input so I've been looking for solutions I can leave plugged in. Right now I use a Takstar SGC-598 microphone with an AA to USB power adapter so I don't have to replace/charge a battery.

Nice review. I was on the fence about adding this to my camera kit because I already have the VideoMic NTG. But the fact that I can plug it into my Wireless Go II transmitters and I can use it in a pinch when I, um, don't charge my VideoMic NTG has sold me on it. Rode keeps knocking it out of the park. At this price point it's worth just having it in the bag.

Sadly this mic doesn't come with a case. But I've found that the inexpensive Røde ZP2 works well enough. It'll fit the mic with the furry WS-12 windscreen (and the rubber ring) on it, mounted on the shock mount, plus the foam windscreen and a couple of cables, and with a bit of thought and care you can even place it so that the fur doesn't get caught in the zipper.

I recently picked up this nice little mic. One thing I like about it, is that because you can slide the mount back and forth on the hot shoe mount, I was able to clip a Wireless GO transmitter on the area where the mount slides. Thereby, creating a boom mic that transmitted audio wirelessly. Of course, it works perfectly with the Wireless GO being a Rode product. Personally, I am very impressed with this mic and very glad I picked it up.

I never used Lightning, but I'm sure there longer cable that exist? Obviously not very long, those type of digital cables usually max out around 2 or 3 meters, but that should be quite enough for your application (or one can switch to a Active cable, but that's a whole different thing and the price explode up). And as always when pushing cable length, get a reputable brand, no need for digital to buy luxury or really expensive cable, but not the cheapest around either. Also, maybe there's a free solution too: don't you have some kind of hub or switch for either lightning or usb? You could put that in between your current cable, and a regular decent USB-C cable? So phone on the desk, short lightning cable into a USB switch (probably better if it's a powered one, that plug into wall power), then any decent USB-C cable from the switch to the mic along the boom arm? In theory that should work and you probable already have that hardware around?

Even after setting the camera gain all the way up, I’m not able to bump the gain on this mic. For comparison, the Rode micro does not have this issue. Yes, it'll pick up all that vibration. If you put some foam under the stand that will help to isolate a bit of the keyboard and mouse vibration noise which transfers to the mic as rumble in addition to the higher frequency clicks.

Hi Curtis. Thank so much for this. I have recently bought this microphone to pair with my canon R6, as my first shotgun mic. Not knowing any better and unfortunately up to this stage I have really not enjoyed the experience at all. The noise level or hiss from the Canon R6 pre-amps are terrible. I have treid different cables, and mics , all the same. This convinced me, its the cameras Pre-amps. I have already lowered the input volume on the camera itself, but the noise is still very prevalent. Is there any adjustments to make via the Rode Central app, to amplify the mics gain, to try and get rid of this terrible noise. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Handy little mic. Camera mic inputs seem to be improving. When are we going to be able to use the USB-c port on the camera for audio input? A side note - The “gain” control on the NTG is NOT an input level control. It controls output level. Not preamp gain.

Hi, thanks for a great channel and review. I picked up one of these mics for their great versatility, and was very impressed with it overall. I have one big complaint that I do not find discussed in any reviews online, and that is the ability to cope with wind noise. I do a lot of filming in rural areas in Africa which gets quite windy, so I purchased the WS-12 windscreen. But even with it on, the mic clips when used in high wind, which causes small little dropouts on recorded audio. I considered returning the mic, but love the versatility, affordability and sound quality. My work around was to use medical 3m Transpore tape to cover the openings on the front and sides of the capsule, the tape being slightly porous, lets enough sound in for decent quality. Have you come across this issue, is there a more professional work around or a firmware update that could solve this problem?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 10 ай бұрын
In high wind, the best solution is usually a blimp style cover which is much larger.

Thank you for all the tests you do. What do you think is the best professional on camera microphone today if you want it to be a bit directional and not so sensitive to hand noise from the camera. This is meant for brodcast audio, I am using MKH 416 today. I like it well but get light hand noise so I have to use an extra holder. Plus it is starting to get old so there is probably something better. Does not think Sony ECM 673 works well enough because it gets too wide. What are your tips?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Svend. I don't have first-hand experience with the Sony so I'm not sure about that one. For handling noise, I think that's more about the shock mount you use. Yes, some mics are more sensitive, but I've found the MKH416 to be pretty decent on that with a good shock mount (CineLa or Rycote).

It depends, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Zoom does some active work to make sure that audio from other participants that makes its way into your mic doesn't end up back in the call. But it isn't perfect. It MIGHT work if you keep your speaker volume low and you position the microphone just right and your room doesn't reflect too much of the sound from the speakers, etc. In other words, it isn't guaranteed to work flawlessly.
