I swear, this is how microphone comparison/reviews should be done. Just straight up tests right off the bat of the same footage by both mics not one continuous speech. Good job.

A primary advantage of the NTG-2 is that it can be powered via phantom power using a long XLR mic cable. This is important when using the mic on a boom pole, as the VMP's audio quality will likely degrade if used with an extension cable. I have both mics, and while the VMP is a great mic for non-demanding on-camera use, the NTG-2 is the superior for recording dialog/interviews and boom pole use.
@matrixate10 жыл бұрын
It almost sounds like you had the high pass filter on the Rode NTG-2 on every test which would have made the test inaccurate. The results you got from the NTG-2 weren't nearly as good as many other people testing out this mic. In fact, this test seems as an attempt to make the VideoMic better than it actually is while the NTG-2 actually has a better directional sound pickup and MUCH lower noise floor and greater signal to noise ratio. It would have been essential to have mentioned that and demonstrated it on the video.

Thanks! That's the best review I have seen (heard) of both mics and you can really feel the differences and similarities. I was planning to buy the NTG-2 as, although more expensive, it was supposed to deliver a better sound quality; which I haven't felt in your comparison. Video Mic Pro is not only cheaper, smaller, lighter and easier to work with when doing it with DSLR (which I'm planning to), but I liked the sound better too. You made me change my mind (and for good, I think). Thanks again!

I hope you didn't buy the Videomic because of this review, because it's not representive of the NTG2, the NTG2 sounds much better in real life, when used with the right TRRS plug

I had both the NTG 2 and Videomic. They serve two very different functions. Size and weight are by no means the only factors to consider. While the Videomic is more convenient as an on camera mic. I purchased the NTG 2 so I could use it with a blimp to cut wind noise which was big problem for me at the time as I did a lot of interviews outside. Also the NTG 2 uses and XLR connector which is more suited to professional audio recorders, this is particularly useful if you have to set you mic longer distance from the camera. The Videomic's range is limited as it's designed as an on camera mic. I would recommend assessing all your needs before making choice. Or better yet, get both.

@TheDemolitionMission9 жыл бұрын
The reason the Videomic Pro sounds better is because the Zoom H1 does not have good preamps and an XLR input. With the proper recorder and a good preamp, the NTG-2 would sound much better.

In a KZbin world severely lacking reviews for audio equipment, You, sir, are a diamond in the rough. A very phenomenal review with actual relevant information rather than simply what the microphone looks like outside of the box. As someone who has a Rode Videomic Pro and is looking to upgrade, how do you think this compares to the NTG2 when it is boomed vs the Rode Videomic Pro using a female 3.5mm to male xlr adapter on a boom? I have heard iffy things about attempting to boom the Rode Videomic, but would love to get closer to my subject.
@generalcontrol11 жыл бұрын
I haven't used any of these off a boom, but from my overall experience - you won't get any better quality buying NTG 1,2 instead of your RVMP. However you'll get XLR connection and there are 3rd party accessories like blimps for a regular shape shotgun like NTG.
@DylanRutter11 жыл бұрын
I think I might try it out and put a review up when I do. Since this video proves that the RVMP is the same quality , and maybe even better, than the NTG2. I just couldn't justify buying one. I do however want a blimp set up down the line with an NTG3.

Great review. I've not seen mentioned the fact that the NTG-2 has a 20-20,000 KHZ range and the Pro has a 40-20,000 KHZ range. Is this important in the real world? I, like others, have ironically heard more bass in the Pro.
@generalcontrol7 жыл бұрын
Not a big deal. You cannot hear 20-40Hz in most situations unless you're listening to music via a huge subwoofer or high quality headphones. And definitely not on human voice material which simply doesn't go that low. What people perceive as "bass" is rather around 100-200Hz. That range can easily be boosted with EQ to sound as boomy as you like.
@PIXscotland9 жыл бұрын
I came here for a quick comparison and test of the NTG-2 as a friend is selling one. The NTG-2 sounded quite disappointing compared to the Videomic Pro. I like the lower end on the VMP. Also the side rejection wasn't as good for high frequencies on the NTG-2. I use two standard Rycote Videomics and H1's at present and enjoy the sound from them for my budget work. I think I'll skip past the NTG-2 based on the sound seen in this video. Thanks.

I´m sorry but I think your NTG2 is broken or you left the hi pass filter on, at least mine sounds nothing compared to that. Maybe is your H1´s input impedance? Is there anyone here that can explain whats happening here? Anyway, great video, Regards!

Hi there, I need a microphone and I wish to record sound to a recorder instead of the camera. I have a Zoom H1, and I'm not sure what to get as with the NTG2, I'm worried that using an XLR to a 3.5mm jack adapter; in order to record to the Zoom H1 will reduce the quality majorly? Because I just don't want to go spending a couple of hundred pounds on a new recorder, as well as buying a new mic. So is the NTG2 good to use with the Zoom H1? Or would you recommend getting a better recorder aswell? Orrr should I just get a Videomic Pro? (I aim to use the microphone on a boom pole etc... for good quality sound, dialogue, foley and so on) Thanks
@generalcontrol8 жыл бұрын
NTG-2 needs 48V phantom power to sound good. Zoom H1 doesn't have it. So in this combination when NTG-2 is fed off a 1.5V AA battery it's just too noisy. I suggest you keeping NTG-2 (it's a more boom-pole friendly mic than Videomic Pro) and getting a better recorder that has XLR inputs and phantom power.

Thanks to your review, I'm definitely returning my NTG2. I have two VideoMic Pro and was gonna try to use the NTG2 for XLR inputs, but I think I'm better off just buying a converter for my VideoMic Pro to XLR. I can't hear much of a difference. If you have any advice regarding audio, please let me know. Likes testing situation and what not. Thanks again!

one big difference... mic pro is for apply to camara... single recorder, ntg2 is most to external recorder, dobly recorder. Maybe he used directly to the camera... thats the reason to sound no soo good the ntg2

there's no way in hell the video mic pro sounds that much better. that's pretty confusing for future buyers. I urge them to look at any other reviews of those mics. I have the NTG-2 and it doesn't sound that bad at 50cm, even on battery power

i think it's because the Zoom h1 doesn't have a XLR input, im not technical in this so dont quote me on it. no matter, its still a good mic i think and if you cant afford a h4n using what u have already is pretty good
@Krubus9 жыл бұрын
it depends on how you set it up, if it's plugged directly into the camera it could sound better or worse, if it's on a stand once again quality could change, your cable could be less tangled up.. Too many variables to compare but it's good to know the Rode ntg 2 sounds better than it did in this video :)
@PaleHorseMediaWA10 жыл бұрын
This guy has no clue what he's talking about. You don't put the NTG-2 horizontally to capture the audio or it will cancel noise like it is doing here. The proper way to use it is to boom closer to vertical so that the upper and lower lobes cancel out the noise to the floor and above. This is a comparison of apples and oranges folks so please don't discount either mic's quality. Professionals who use these mics use them together most of the time - the Video Mic is placed on the camera for reference audio and the NTG-2 is boomed (hand held or on a stand).
