In case someone runs across this video 2017, as a film grad, I just wanted to point some key things out. 1. A directional microphone will give you better sound (if the goal is to hear a voice). 2. The Zoom is a recording device, with an OPTIONAL microphone. Keyword: Optional. 3. The Zoom records at a higher bit rate than in camera sound.. Without getting too technical, and using an analogy, think of your camera's sound like a 480p image, and the Zoom's sound a 1080p image. 4. After understanding all of these concepts, a directional microphone PAIRED with a RECORDING DEVICE (as a primary function, not an "add on"), will give you the best sound.. e.g. Zoom + Rode = Great sound. Hope this helps.

0:25 Videomic---> 60D 0:50 Zoom H1, synced in post 2:06 Zoom H1 --> 60D 2:35 Videomic ---> Zoom H1 2:55 60D internal mic I wonder if the Zoom H1--->60D would sound better if you lowered the 60D input gain?

Dinkymod thats right. what you need to do is set it to manual and knock it all the way down to the lowest input setting then pump it up about four clicks. that works best whenever i use an external mic on the 60D

One thing not mentioned is the Rode mic is a Shotgun Mic. therefore it does well picking up things directly in front of it but not so well at picking op sound from Either side. Great for interview or Boom work where you can point it directly at your subject. The Zoom however is a stereo mic which has a larger angle of reception. Both good mic's It just depends on what you need them for.

@pacificYO
@pacificYO 7 жыл бұрын
Arpan if you are going to do drawing videos, a lapel mic or a condenser mic (like a blue snowball) would be best. The lapel mic would only capture your voice if you are narrating. The condenser would capture everything including the environmental sounds like a fan, or etching charcoal in a wood desk. Blue snowballs are usb though, they MIGHT have an adaptor to plug into DSLRS

H1 is not a mic, it's a recorder. It has mics on it, yes, but so does your camera. Camera mic < H1 mic < Rode mic
@BenWyrosdick

@@iamnaveenkulkarni you are also using the h1 amp instead of the camera. Canon has not great preamps so it makes a difference. Also, the h1 has some filtering so it cleans up some highs and lows you might not want in the sound. You could do this in post but it's easier here.

Rode into the H1 definitely sounded the best to me. I have an H1 and while I like as a recorder the mic does leave a little to be desired. The main advantage of using the H1 tho is that you can plug in a lapel mic or even just drop the thing near your audio source and then shoot from half a mile away eliminating camera noise and getting you much closer to your subject than you might get otherwise. I also keep an H2 in my bag which I feel has a much more sturdy casing so you eliminate some of the case creaking I've found to be a problem on the H1, and it also boast a much nicer set of mics if you want to record with it directly. Probably my favorite setup is having the h1 hooked into some kind of better mic (either a shotgun if I have a sound guy or a lapel if that's a practical option) and then the H2 close to wherever some action is going to be happening that isn't really lavable. I'll usually also stick a cheap shotgun on my dslr aswell just to ensure good sync sound. Granted I'm usually shooting in very large venues where it isn't practical to get the camera all that close to the action.

@FireflyShrimp Absolutely. You can definitely hear the sound overpeak and you could improve on that a lot by bringing the levels down. I had the levels set on both the camera and the zoom to match using the Rode, so that's why there is such a big change. That being said, using the Zoom independently and syncing in post is really the way to go. Having worked with it, in my opinion, I'd rank the quality from best to worst as: H1+Rode, H1 alone, Rode to camera, H1 to camera.

@hitsu007 Sometimes audio can get thrown out of sync over longer periods of time because of frame rate, but in practice this only occurs in long timelines with an equally long independent sound mix. So, to answer your question, I've never had any issues.

Yes Matt, people are still watching this video. I know this is 7 years later and mirrorless cameras have taken over a lot of the video making market, however if viewers are still using Canon DSLR cameras for video they should look in to running Magic Lantern on their camera. There are a lot of video and audio enhancements using this 3rd party software without buying a new camera. Your 60D would benefit greatly using Magic Lantern.

Fantastic comparison; Matthew. I've watched a lot of videos to find the best for comparison of the Rode Videomic and Zoom H1 and you've nailed it. For benefit of other viewers, I'm adding the sequence of this recording: 1. Rode Videomic direct to Canon 60D 2. Audio from Zoom H1 added to Canon 60D video in post 3. Zoom H1 direct to the Canon 60D mic input 4. Rode Videomic into the Zoom H1 mic input; added to Canon 60D video in post 5. Direct audio from the Canon 60D (towards the end) Personally, I think there is no doubt that the Zoom H1 audio quality is richer, especially since its a stereo mic. On # 3 above, the audio is much louder than in the other options but I suspect the input level on the 60D remained unchanged throughout the video. There should be a way to control this either in the H1 output or the Canon audio input level, or both.

Hi, I'm a 13 year old kid who is really into filmmaking although I'm finding it really difficult. At my age, it wouldn't be possible to use adult actors and a storyline using only child/ no actors. I have quite a lot of equipment but can't think how to make a solution. A lot of people would recommend a documentary style route, although would this still count as short film? I would love to explore story through film but I can't for these reasons, thanks to anybody who has an opinion!!

Hey there, Ethan. I made my first film years back when I was your age as well. What I'd recommend is to start from scratch, have a couple of friends or people who are willing to help you out and just keep improving yourself from doing your own shoots as well as taking reference online. People are generally supportive within the KZbin as well as certain filmmaking communities so don't miss out a chance to meet new people. Who knows, you might just find someone who could really urge you forward. Best of luck for the road ahead!

@AussieVlogging I'm replying to this so it gets moved to the top and people see it as I'm sure a lot of people will ask about this. To be fair, I had manually set all the the levels to be the same, so I feel that I could have got a little better sound out of the H1-to-60D setup had I made adjustments between test. Obviously the H1 independently would still have sounded better, though.
@MatthewPearce
@MatthewPearce 13 жыл бұрын
@koalakisser The 60D has full manual audio control, so there isn't ACG as long as you turn it to manual. If I'm using in-camera audio I always set the levels myself because, as you mention, in auto your sound will get trashed with hiss and hum.
@product1349

Using both together sounded best. It is always best to use a preamp of some kind with this cheaper mics. It will make them sound much higher quality. You also have the option os running the rode mic into a Saramonic SmartRig. Depending on the model you get it could save you some money but at the end of the day its more about convenience and function. If you want fewer buttons and not have to bring in the audio as a separate track than the smartrig is the way to go but if you rather use SD cards and sync the audio in post the the Zoom is a winner.

First rule of making good videos: Know your audience. As I mention in the beginning, obviously these are two very different devices, however, everyday countless of beginning budget filmmakers choose one or the other to use in EVERY environment.It would be great if everyone could afford a full kit, but in reality people are looking for a single, versatile, setup; mostly for dialogue as you see in this video. I suggest if you ever want to make your own videos you always keep the viewer in mind.

I do test sound check and adjust so peaks are about -6, so it depends on the distance, the volume of the lines you are recording. Aiming and then adjusting as you go keeps sound pretty crisp. Also when syncing it's always good to use a clapper or jsut clap your hands together and sync the peak of the on camera sound with the external sound and then dropping or muting the video's sound track.

I bought both and it helps to have a back up recording in case something fails on the primary source recording. As well, the H1 is great for using at indoor live shows... you simply go to a 'dollar store' and buy some self-adhesive velcro strap... cut to size... then find a column or post at the venue near the center of the band and place the H1 up high on the post... record the show... and then don't forget to grab it before leaving the venue!

@FireflyShrimp This is precisely because the camera is a MIC Input, not a Line Input. You can fudge with in camera levels all you want, or on the Zoom H1, but what really needs to happen is a couple in line resistors on the supplied cable between the Zoom H1 & the 60D to change it from a Line Out signal (Zoom) to a Mic level for the 60D.

None if you are running the mic straight to: Camera or Zoom. However if you need a longer cord (say for a boom pole), would get a shielded extension of about 10-15 feet. Depending on length of the pole. The length has to be longer then the pole, since you should be wrapping the cord down the pole to keep it from swinging and banging.

You can certainly monitor audio on a DSLR with the supplied breakaway RCA cable. What you need is a RCA female stereo to 3.5mm female adapter. It's not even a cable, just a triangle looking connector that uses the red & white from the breakaway cable from the camera (on canon's the breakaway rca cable plugs into a mini USB port), and you plug your headphones into the 3.5mm on the other side of the adapter. Works at least on playback, but with the Magic Lantern firmware, you can use it recording.

@msbiogenic you're either getting hiss from interference caused by your cable's lack of shielding or the auto gain control is setting your audio pick up really high and it's picking up noise because of that. you'll either need better shielded cables or you need to disconnect the h1 and sync in post instead recording audio straight. try syncing and if it seems too much of a hassle try the new cables (if that doesn't work you're just kinda screwed, sorry)

Well. I am a beginner. But I think the Zoom H1 is better if your camera does not have a external mic. Am I correct?

Trying to decide if I should go this way combining the H1 and RodeMic for recording or to get an iRig Pre and connect it with the RodeMic...Anyone have experience using both methods? What produced the better result?

I also have the videomic but when i use it for my canon 600D you hear a lot of hiss. When you put the videomic into the H1 was there any hiss, or was the sound clean? Great video!

thanks for the comparison. One thing makes me curious, when you set the sampling rate to 96khz on H1 connecting to 60D, the 60D can still catch the same rate? or only 48khz? thanks

@rkrockstarmusic Yes, with an XLR to 3.5mm adapter. Since it allows a stereo connection, it would be wisest to get a 2 x XLR Female to 3.5mm stereo Y cable. Even if you use just 1 XLR at a time, you will still have the ability for 2 in the future. These are readily available from places like monoprice

What is the best setting if I connect my Zoom H1 into my 650D ? I mean the input level on both Zoom H1 and 650d ?

When you plugged the h1 into the 60D, it sounded a bit overdriven, or is it just me?

Zoom h1 internal preamp is definitely one of the best for the price. DSLRs preamps are not very good, thats why the best sounds here are the H1 standalone mode and the Rode via H1 preamp. Im very happy i bought this recorder. Thanks for the review!

I have the Rode Videomic Pro plugged into a Zoom H1. I tried recording behind my car at a standstill in my driveway. When I rev the car, the audio gets really distorted and sounds bad. I have auto-gain on the H1 turned off and the level set to 1. On the Rode I had it on at +20db. Any idea why the sound got ruined? Thanks!

I have the Zoom H2N and the Zoom H4N but any Zoom is great to have. Love the set up in this video with the Rode mic + Zoom sounds amazing. I ordered this Rode mic with the plans of running with either of my zoom. Great comparison on here.

@MrSquareZNation the settings in the camera are different than the h1. when the h1 was recording it was using it's own volume and balance settings but when he plugged it into the 60D it switched over to the camera's settings which were different than the h1's settings.

Gurudeclan is 100% spot on. My zoom sounded terrible plugged into my D7000 until I turned down the mic sensitivity and then it sounded great, except for the handling noise. Maybe not the greatest for outside, but the Zoom is an amazing mic and great bang-for-buck indoors.
