Only 524 subscribers? You surely deserve more! Just subscribed. I use the MOVO VXR10 because it's about 6dB louder than the Røde VideoMicro. That means your microphone volume levels can be lowered in the camera which means less hiss / noise because the preamp is doing less work :)

@@JakeMcHugh Seems like the Movo versus Rode assessment would be different depending on which camera you're using it with? I think Movo's advantages are well suited to Canon bodies, given their [apparently] poor quality pre-amps. I'm shooting with a 70D, so this is a helpful comparison as I'm considering which to purchase.

Honestly they both sound good, the Movo just has a bit more low-mids, which can create a slight muddy sound, but is super simple to adjust in post so definitely not a deal breaker. Overall quality on both was great, and i think it just comes down to what budget you're on atm. Great options indeed.

Hey Jake, thanks for putting this comparison together. There is definitely a difference between the two. In every test situation, the Movo seemed to produce a warmer, bassier sound to it. However, it also picked up more of the ambient noise when you were outside. It's a tough call between the two. Like you had mentioned though, there are different users for each one.
@JakeMcHugh3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I find that the Movo picks up the lower frequencies much more than the Rode. It works nicer for voices like mine for this reason I think. I personally find the Rode to pick up more ambient noise though due to it's omnidirectional pick up pattern. The Movo would be perfect for podcasts because it picks up the bass of the human voice quite well, and possibly ideal for recording an acoustic music performance because of it's extra sensitivity. We should not be fooled that the Movo is "better" because it records louder. In your editing you would just simply bring up the volume on your Rode-micked project. Final statement, if you are on-the-go, and doing a lot of outdoors or nature videos, sports, etc., then the Rode would handle better because it's not so sensitive to movements and i'd say wind-senstivity, too. But for studio work, seems like the Movo takes that prize.
@JakeMcHugh4 жыл бұрын
You make some great points and I agree. Also the movo is easier to use on a computer for a podcast as well. Thanks for watching!

I was thinking the same thing. I'm looking for a microphone to boost the sound when I film outdoors and I have a preference for how the Rode sounds in that environment. I've seen many video reviews filmed for the Movo inside and somewhat chaotic outdoor tests so hearing a calm piece of dialogue really helped.

Great explanation-- especially for me, I have the m50 mark ii, and you convinced me to get the Movo VXR10. Really well-presented to. Especially the in-studio stuff looked real pretty and you have a great voice. I do want to make one suggestion though. I had trouble comparing your examples-- after a while, I'd forget what the other mic sounded like. At times I was even a little unsure about which camera you were focusing on. You may want to consider going to a choppier compare-and-contrast narrative structure, as opposed to the more long-form structure you have. But, overall, really great job. And, most important, you helped ME. Thank you.

Great vid man. I like the Movo best. It has a more of an "in your face" factor, let me explain. It kind of channels and pushes your voice more towards the person you're addressing, and since I have a naturally quieter voice, I appreciate that touch. I also think that this lends to it being more directional, and I thought that it was harder to hear ambient noise with it in the vid. If you're shooting outside and don't want ambient noise, I think this is the way to go. Great stuff man, thanks for the review.

Jake McHugh For the interest of your viewers I should mention that I was going to get the Movo and went to Amazon to read reviews. Man.. the number one complaint people seem to have is the attachment arm being so stiff and brittle on it. There were tons of people who had it break into multiple pieces. Movo sells a replacement for $12 plus shipping, which means if you break it and replace it you’ve paid the same price at the Rode mic... considering I have a roller skating/rollerblading/ice skating channel I am always filming in heavy action settings and it’s not entirely uncommon for me to fall and slam my gear on the ice or pavement, so I ended up going with the Rode mic to use with my Insta360 One R. I feel like the Rode is probably the better choice also because it seems to cut out excess background noise better. Cheers man! Subscribed.

I own and have used the VXR10 for shooting race cars with loud exhaust, the Movo will clip and distort with the loud audio. I can’t find its maximum SPL rating anywhere, but the Rode has a 140 decibel SPL, and should be able to handle the louder environments better, in theory.
@AllenUnderwood4 жыл бұрын
Hey man - good job on the comparison. I will say at 3:55 - 3:57 (and in other places with the MOVO), you can definitely hear an electric buzz in the background. Even though the audio itself sounds like it has more body, that buzz basically kills it for me. I'm curious if you were using different cables or anything? I didn't notice the buzz on the outdoor vlog style shooting, but that's likely because there was so much more ambient noise. Thanks again for the effort you put in here.
@JakeMcHugh4 жыл бұрын
Hey Allen! So I was using the cables that were supplied with the mic throughout the video. I’ll have to listen to it more again, but I think it could either be my AC running (it’s terrible in that room) or just a really hot signal. On the Panasonic GH5 you can only go down -12dB in the settings and with my Movo you are getting close to peaking sometimes. I’m hoping to do a part two of this video since it’s been a year from this one being released and I have more experience with them. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!!

The Rhodes has a more pronounced sound at around the 800hz and 2Khz, making the voice sound more brittle and intensifying the sibilance ("S" sounds). Whereas the Movo has more happening in the low mid giving the voice a more full-bodied sound so it's not as brittle sounding as the Rhodes. I like the Rhodes for eliminating ambient noise, but I like the Movo for the more full-bodied sound. This might be a difficult choice for me because I don't want to have to do too much in post. The "S" sounds on the Rhodes are so harsh they're gonna need to be de-essed in post. Great review, thank you.

In your case I think I would go with the Movo so you can keep your camera’s pre amps as low as possible, but I do prefer the build quality of the Rode slightly more. I highly suggest you check out my part two of this comparison as it goes much more in detail about these mics which you can find here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h16TZXavo9p5ic0 I hope this helps and thanks for watching!!

hey man! Dope video. I ordered the Movo but based on other comments I’m a little bit unsure again haha. I film a lot around nyc and Los Angeles (both indoor and outdoor), also experiencing lots of windy situations when vlogging outdoors. Specifically for high winds, is the Movo fine? Or is the rode better? I really do like the extras that come with the Movo tho..

Sorry for the late reply. What camera do you use it on? I personally like the Rode better for windy situations because of it’s deadcat, otherwise they are a horse a piece in the wind. I made a part two of this video where you can see the difference in deadcats in a mock test. I do think the Movo would be slightly better in a city situation due to it being more directional while the Rode picks up more ambient noises. So if you prefer the more directional sound stick with the Movo, but if your okay with more city noise and slightly better wind performance then go with the Rode. I honestly think the Movo with the Rode components would be a killer setup. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks! This was helpful. You got a new subscriber. I'm going with the Movo. I 'm just starting my KZbin channel. I do martial art and self defense so both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Thinking I will need to clip on mike next.

This was really helpful, I'm still undecided on which mic to get and was wondering what you would chose? I have a fujifilm XT20 and will be using the mic for various types of videos for my business, some examples are of different events (both indoors and outdoors) following people walking and touring homes and also interviewing people who will be stationary (both indoor and outdoor settings), with the videos for work being my primary focus. I also would love a mic that is great for vlogging and travel videos. With all that I mentioned above which mic would you recommend? Also for reference I have been doing photography for 4 years in a professional manner, but picked up my first camera and really started learning the ins and outs 8 years ago. I had my own real estate photography business that I ran until I became a Realtor and now continue to use my skills for our team but I am looking to step up our videography in what we do to promote our business and the homes we list.

You really can't go wrong with either one in my opinion! I find the Movo to be more directional which is nicer for dialogue situation because you just hear more of the voice only. When shooting outside I like the Rode more due to the fact is that it handles the wind nicer in my experience. The deadcat on it is nicer than the Movo which helps block the wind more I feel and it's not as hot or sensitive as the Movo so you don't hear the wind blowing as much in your videos. Both are really great mics for the price, I'm sure either one will get the job done for you! I hope this helps!

maybe im biased cause I honestly was hoping the movo would sound better. but I think the audio was more clear and natural sounding through the movo
@JakeMcHugh4 жыл бұрын
Could be! I find the movo to be more directional which could be why it sounds more natural to you. Either way you can’t really go wrong with either mic! Thanks for watching!

Hi! My nice headphones are broke and I can't really hear the difference myself with my current headphones, which one of these has a better sound quality, and which one has less noise? I would be very grateful for your answer! ✨
@JakeMcHugh4 жыл бұрын
Both sound great! The Movo is a little more directional so you don’t notice as much ambient sound as with the Rode. Generally noise is from the Preamps in cameras more than the mics themselves so if you have poor preamps (like canon cameras) then the movo is nicer. Movo is the better choice for smartphones as well since it comes with both cords. Thanks for watching!

@@JakeMcHugh thank you so much for the answer! I actually need one of these mics for my pc or phone(the other ones I've seen are too pricey for me, and I don't want a usb mic) I also have a phantom power if they require it. I tried searching for movo, but seems like I can't buy it in my country. I only found rode on AliExpress, people say it's an original one. But if I somehow would find movo...I've heard that the movo is louder than rode, and if you lower the wolume on the post production you'll get cleaner sound. Also people in other reviews say rode has more highs and movo has more bass. Sometimes when I do voiceacting with my current mic my voice gets annoyingly high sometimes, would it be nicer for me to get bassy movo to kinda fix that? And I've heard that if you lover the highs when editing you'll ruin the sound quality. Is that true? (。•́︿•̀。) Sorry for so many questions

Maybe you could look into the Behringer XM8500 which is a XLR mic for around $20 USD. It's good for the money and you could use it with a standard XLR to USB cable or with your pre amp which would be a little better. This mic is really great at eliminating background noise and picking up your voice only. The only downside is that it would be more difficult to use with a phone. You could see an example of me using this microphone in this video here around 5:25: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn-xm4Jta76VnrM As far as the Movo vs Rode, the Rode doesn't work with computers easily and the Movo does, but it isn't ideal. Both of these mics don't require a preamp, but it could help with the movo for computer use. The Movo would help a little more with bass, but you could add it in post as well. You can adjust the levels in post, but only a little bit. The best thing to do is to set your levels before you start recording and having your peaks hit around -12dB to avoid having your voice distort. Often with cheaper or lower quality microphones the higher frequencies begin to have a more "Tinny" sound. With all these mics mentioned you don't really have to worry about this. I would say if you are going to use a mic with your phone over 75% of the time then go with the Movo. If you are going to use it with your computer over 75% then I would go with the Behringer. I hope this helps!
