Sound advice about charging cycles!! Great video. You nailed every aspect of this mic! Seenheiser’s are good and if buying a wireless mic will bring it to the Seenhiser ball park then the choice should be Sennhiser. Still this a a very good mic!
@CristiTomaPhotography5 жыл бұрын
You worry too much. Most modern LiIon battery chargers will charge only until 90% and report zero charge at 10%. A battery charged between these limits will last at least a thousand cicles. That is the battery actual level, not the indicator. Meaning 10% is zero and 90% is full charge.

Great stuff as always! One section I thought was super interesting was the mic quality between having it to the side of your face and under your chin. I know bass frequencies travel differently to mids and highs, but yours was the first video on the Go where I've seen that demonstrates that. It helps as it highlights what's needed in post, also I didn't know about the V2 so thanks! 👍

Except this is not how cycles work. If you charge from 60% to 80% this will be just 1/5 of a cycle, not one full cycle (www.apple.com/batteries/why-lithium-ion/). Unless RØDE uses a different DoD (depth of discharge) metrics from Apple. But still, not every single charge will count as a full cycle.

One thing to be careful about with the Rode Wireless Go is the failure of the internal mic on the transmitter. It isn't the mic failing, but the external socket contacts don't seem to spring back after you use an external mic. I have had two units fail on me now. My best advice for anyone who just wants to use the internal mic, is never plug anything into the external socket. I can live without the internal mic, but for something at this price point the failure of a socket does beg questions about the build quality of the units and their life span, but then if the battery is dead in two years, I guess that was the calculation. It is a real shame as they are nice small compact units, but not something I will rely on for professional use going forward. Rode you have let yourself down:-(

I'm sure that your 'Quad Copters' (DRONES) are using Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) not Lithium Ion batteries. Yes it is imperative that Li-Poly Batteries be stored at 3.8 volts per cell (Storage Charge) or they will quickly loose their full charge capacity. Also Li-Polys should be stored in fire proof vented bags or boxes. And never never discharge them lower than 20% to 25% of full charge.

A cycle is from 100% down to 0%, then charged up to 100% again. So if you charge batteries from 90% to 100% 10 times, that's only one cycle.
@jambononi5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the point he's making is that it damages the cells to charge small amounts back to 100%, so that use of logic doesn't quite apply to real life. So even charging a small amount, still counts as one of the 100 cycles that he references.

Charging 10% is less damaging than charging 100% for lithium ion batteries. In any case refer to this article batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

i get what you are saying but there is also the issue of keeping the battery at 100% is also not good for the battery. Storage charge for lithium battery are at around 3.8 volts per cell. At a 100% charge, you looking at 4.2 which is a lot for the battery to have to keep in constantly. It will ware on the battery.

Wai Lam I guess we need to do a practical test for both methods 😅

I watched this video a week before I got to a photo/video expo where, if this was an item someone had on sale, I would get one. Somewhere, sometime, at least one retailer is going to dip the price on a new product, so I kept my fingers crossed and including the savings from having a lower price and taking it with me instead of needing to order online, I saved C$62. Not. Too. Shabby. This video was a good start so I was aware of some things to consider before hand My early observations. Bluetooth pairing - blink of an eye quick. The information on the display is really handy. Something I know I would regret not having with the Sennheiser XSW-D. If you intend to use it indoors, dismiss most of those reviews like I kept finding that for some reason think you would record someone facing away from the camera at 50 feet and more and with it breaking up before that. That's a pretty unnatural composition to have a subject heard in a close up volume when you can see they are 50 feet away, let alone ignoring the camera. I ran out of room facing away at 35 feet indoors line of sight and in a second trial going 13 feet, then walking down a right angle hallway for another 24 feet, facing away. No problems. I am not happy that they wired the 1/8" output of the receiver to be TRS dual mono. It's a mono microphone. Keep the signal chain mono all the way. You can always mix out a mono signal to L&R later when you're editing. Also if Rode want customers to buy more than one Wireless Go unit, make it easy for them to connect #1 talent's mic to the recorder's Left and #2 talent to the recorder's Right, again for post mixing. Recorders with balanced input circuits don't play nice with this setup of dual mono either. eg. ATR-3350 lavalier into a Tascam DR-40 recorder needs adapters to kill that ring contact. PITA. Wind "puff" - still sucks. They don't stay on (the box contained 2) and I bought mine early November. I barely let go of it after pressing it down and it falls away. There is no feel or sound that it clipped in to the holes. Maybe with the serial number Rode can tell me if it's a first edition model. UPDATE - They have a redemption program - shipping replacement to me now. Battery - Not worried. I don't own anything where I couldn't find a how to on KZbin to crack it open and replace the battery. I've done it with tablets, phones, bluetooth communication headsets. If it's useless anyway after two years (which it won't be) what have you got to lose to try it. Also ---- you can operate the Wireless GO via the usb for power. Miniature battery bank tucked away on the talent as a last resort. The sensitivity pad function - It might be misleading at first to understand. I kept pushing the pad switch to step through the values and the level indicator never changed. That's because the display's level indicator is the strength of signal TO the receiver. That's handy to adjust mic placement. The pad adjusts the level OUT of the receiver to your camera or other recorder. There is no visual cue for that signal. I had both the Sennheiser XSW-D and the Rode demonstrated to me by their respective distributors for Canada. There is certainly not much to knock about the Sennheiser - talk about a solid feeling unit and top of the line lavalier with threaded jack. Different strokes, etc. but I have no remorse choosing the Rode.

I have stopped buying any product with batteries that are not user replaceable. Probably my next smartphone will break my rule ..no choice. The Wireless GO is really cool, but not on my acquisition list. Good review.

I have the sennheiser wireless but it’s 3-4x the size of the GO and 2.5x price. The GO sounds 80% of the quality of the sennheiser and so small.
