*IMPORTANT DISTINCTION* The dropouts at short range were only outdoors where there were no nearby walls. The range is significantly better indoors and outdoors when there are walls nearby to reflect the RF signal. Some people seem to be assuming that the outdoor test represents all situations. But fortunately, those reading this are now disabused of that faulty assumption. Love you guys!

No matter that I was an early purchaser and extensive user of the Wireless Go, I still awaited your review. Clear, detailed as always, and yes - love your screaming into the mic :) Also, love your background blue. After a lot of testing, I still have yet to get the thing to drop audio when outside and with bodies blocking line of site (during grappling, etc). I did experience a couple of drops, minimal, when outside and with the person transmitting at elevation (a mere 20' up and amid trees and stony borders). I shall do more and see if I can get it to crack. Just wanted to let you know I so appreciate your channel, your work, and your refined manner. Thank you.
@RedBearAK5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I noticed those immediate dropouts outside. Nothing for the signal to bounce off when your back was to the camera, with your body blocking the signal. Should have done another walk with it in the pocket or belt. If you never turned to place your entire body between the transmitter and receiver, it probably wouldn't have dropped at all, right up to about 70 meters outdoors. Great place to put it is top of the shoulder. It's so dang small that might actually be feasible, especially with any kind of coat on. Or clip it to a shoulder epaulette. Heck, you could even put it under a hat without any discomfort. Imagine trying that with a RØDELink.

Keep in mind that is outdoors. Indoors the range is much greater. But yes, if you're going to be shooting outdoors with the TX on the back of the talent, probably better to look at the RODELink system.
@Jinsuun5 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd that's a big minus actually. People tend to turn and not just stand still when shooting. So it doesn't really matter if you put the TX in front or the back of the talent. Great video! This is the kind of review I was looking for. 16 minutes in and you answered my biggest question. How does the built in mic on the Wireless Go handle loud places like a convention floor. I'll be getting this for a convention in September and I was wondering if the audio will be usable in a loud environment. I shoot on a GH5 and I think I would prefer to take the signal from the receiver and go directly into my Zoom H6 as opposed to the GH5 itself. Rode's lav mic is pretty pricey. Do you think that is necessary or would I be fine with just the built in mic on the Wireless Go for a convention? Please let me know!

Hi Techno Dad. Good news: I have a sample of the mic on a convention center floor here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnTUnXmOZZyghKs Ignore the handheld mic - we used that for backup but it turns out the the Wireless Go did really well so we just used the Wireless Go audio.

Simply state, as you did. ...This box contains... boom. done(I would put sooner though). You also put pros and cons at beginning which is great. Then you went through tests with little to no fluff. Great I would've added for newbs like me: 1) the windcover has soft foam circular cover that sits over mic that is meant to be there and is NOT to be pulled off..like I started to. 2) Rode symbol button on the transmitter only functions as on/off (i believe) not dual function how the reciever can also change display brightness length. You can figure out how it works with this vid as oppose to many others that want to tell you favorite features and exactly how to just get it going and what the not so intuitive design means. Hi Curtis, I wonder if it possible to attach two lav-microphones to the "transmitter" using a Y-splitter cable? Would be interesting to test.
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
Yes, technically possible, but can be troublesome if one person talks louder than the other because you cannot control the input level for each mic independently with a splitter.

I've been testing this recently, as Rode sent me the new white version to test and review. Although I always record audio into a dedicated recorder, I'm running tests directly into my Panasonic G85 as I feel most users would record directly into a camera for convenience. I'm feeling rather lackluster about the quality of the recording (the gear itself is fantastic). I noticed here yours sounded noticeably worse into the GH5 compared to Black Magic. Are Panasonic's built-in preamps just really bad compared to some other cameras? I don't remember my Canon preamps sounding this bad when I vlogged. Thanks! ~Brian
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, good question, I don't know. I don't use the camera preamps except when doing these reviews, to be honest. In fact, for my livestreams until just recently I fed audio from my Sound Devices MixPre into a Panasonic GH5S and got what seemed like very good results. In that light, I suspect there were other factors leading to the poorer quality in the GH5 shots.
@AudioforContentCreators4 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd Interesting. I too find the audio quality is substantially better when I first run into a dedicated preamp/recorder in line to the G85. Thanks for the reply! I'll keep testing and probably publish a series of a/b tests on this topic. It's been really bugging me.

Hello Sir, excellent review! One question: I’m wondering if the output level at its highest setting is good enaugh for Canon cameras with noisy pre-amps (I’d use it with Canon M50)?

I don’t have a Canon on hand to test that but I suspect yes. Any Canon shooters here know?

Hey Curtis, do you have a reco for a cable to convert this to mini xlr for the Pocket 4k?
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
I would just use the 3.5mm input. Or if you're already using that for something else, you'd need a 3.5mm TRS to TA3M cable. I'm not sure whether this one will work, but it is about the only one I was able to find after searching for 10 minutes: bhpho.to/2pz80P9

just a notice!, you cannot find the firmware on rode site, and they still say 0, -6, and -12 db on their site in the specs of the Wireless go ??...well, we´ll see when it arrieves (15th of may, if i´m lucky!)
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
I am told by RODE that the updated firmware is pre-installed on all shipping WIRELESS GO kits so that should not be an issue for you. I had a pre-production copy with finalized hardware. Not sure why the site has not been updated.

If I am using this with the Mix Pre 6, is the audio able to be fed out the 3.5mm jack into an xlr adapter into the mixpre so I can mix whilst I have the Rode Go and a boom mic at the same time on the talent?

Hey Curtis, does the Rode receiver need to physically be turned on manually? Or does it have the same capability as the Rode Videomic Pro where it turns on and off in sync with your camera?

Hi, it must be turned on by holding down the power button. It does NOT have an auto-power-on feature.

Thank you for this. Quick question. If one put's this on talent that's on a stage (conference/public speaking) aand the client moves around a lot and turns their back, then do you think this system will still hold? The drop out when not in line of sight at under 10 meters seems like a huge con.
@mrheng5625 жыл бұрын
Kartikeya Bhalla , doubt it. I’ve done my testing and it will drop signal. But, that depends how far you are as well.

Kartikeya Bhalla , I’ve put out a video with some real world testing. Watch it and see if it’ll make or break your decision. Keep in mind that the system appears to do better indoors, if that's where you'll be shooting. If you're looking for a system for venues with a lot of RF activity and you need more range and a bit more out-of-line-of-sight capability, you'll probably want to look at RODELink or a UHF wireless system instead of a 2.4GHz digital system.

Thank you so much for these great info, i was considering this mic due to it size and flexibility since i had the Rodelink mic, but in all the reviews that i saw you the only one who talks about losing signal in outdoor!! i do must of my shooting outdoor so this was a deal breaker for me , i really appreciate the info..

You're welcome. It works well outdoors if you're within about 5 meters of the receiver. But not so well for longer distances.

Hey Curtis, I'm recording with this Rode Wireless Go on the Fuji X-H1. The camera has pretty good pre-amps. Will I get best results using a hot signal (0db) from the Rode and turning it down in post, or a softer signal (-12db or -24db) and turning the camera up?
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, I'd test to see which delivers the best results. Usually I'd run the RODE a little hotter, and turn down the camera. but if the audio clips, there's no way to turn that down in post.
@JimJepson4 жыл бұрын
During you range tests, it appears that with the Sanken lav mic, your signal was stronger than without. I’m guessing that the cable for the lav acts as a bit of an antenna to help with reception. Which makes sense because phones and the older radio Walkmans we used to carry around needed the earphones to help with signal strength.

Thanks Jim, that's an interesting point.

Do you recommend mixing these on recorder along with other lav systems (sennheiser, rodelink)?
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
Sure, they should work. The results may be better if you stick with the same system, however, at least in theory, since they'll know how to avoid interfering with each other.

Hello Curtis, do you think that I’m better off buying two of these as opposed to systems like the comica or saramonic that have 2 transmitters and one receiver? I’m interested in stability and quality and I mostly shoot narrative work so I’m close to the talent 90% of the time.

As usual, a very thorough, practical and useful review. Many thanks, Curtis. The Rode Wireless GO looks to be the same technology as the Boss WL 20 guitar transmitter/receiver system (of course, there are some differences). The WL 20s also operate at 2.4 GHz, depend on line-of-sight for consistent transmission, and have built in batteries which cannot be replaced. I would expect that we will see this technology improving.
