Tim, you need to put a few cheap hinges on your new metal storage box so that it’s sealed at all times. I bet you have some in your storage shed.

Here is a thought! Food storage box, there is a way to forklift the feed into the container. Turn the container on its side, top facing forward, having reinforced the side of the container that will be the base. Then make the lid into doors on the front of the food storage box.

Could you put the box on its side and drive the pallets straight in. The pallets would be the floor. Lash the lid up with a few hinges so it flips over and secures at bottom

Possibly could work but not with the full height pallets how they arrive. Think I will build something out of blocks eventually once I know where is best for it.

Maybe try putting some hay bales in the bottom so the bags are reachable and less strain on you back…

A man of your talents could convert an end into a door no problems. Bit of angle bar for support and a couple of hinges? May even be wide enough to drive pallet in to unload?

We all need something like your box. I use a refurbished metal waste bin.

When I was younger, my dad used to keep chickens and kept the feed in a rubber bin. Bin bags were being used everywhere rather than the old style dustbins that everyone was getting rid of. One morning he opened up the bin to start scooping out feed to put in the bucket he used to carry the feed to the chicken pen and a rat jumped out. He then used to leave the bin with about 5kg of weight on top of it. That thing doesn't have hinges but they might be good to add. Also, the lid would fall back against the walls of the barn so chains to limit it's movement might not be necessary. I would personally add hinges and a latch to be sure that it's been closed all night because I don't like rats jumping up at me. A boot gas spring strut also struck me as a possible solution to opening it up if you hinged it but in all honesty, if you picked some up free it might be quite interesting to see them used this way.

Yes not a fan of that type of surprise either! Mouse in a welly boot wasn't great either recently. 😂

Why don’t you just put what is now the front on the floor, meaning that the lid is now the front. You could then put some hinges on the bottom of the lid and just open and close it, meaning you can just drop the pallet in and close it up. It would only be a little bit of welding for the hinges and job would be done!

I just have a small outfit, 10 chooks, and found you can pick up a big old broken freezer for almost nothing that holds a lot of food and rats can't get to it.

Yeah we use a chest freezer too, works great but just not big enough anymore.

I recently read about a humane society placing ‘career cats’ with businesses. They come with all shots etc, ready for their new life of hunting.

Perhaps we will get a couple more 'feral' farm cats once our old girl is no longer around. For now she owns the place! 😂

I have noticed that you don't have Barn cats and have wondered a bit at it.

Our cat and dog work in harmony rodent catching. Reggie the cat chases them out Bailey the dog eats them. You need a pal for Maggie 😊
