There's a video on KZbin of Rodney Dangerfield on David Letterman's show but David Letterman kept interrupting the flow of jokes. Rodney D pauses before the punchline and Johnny Carson knows to keep quiet during that pause. David Letterman didn't know and tried to come in with his own wit - it's called 'treading on the jokes' and it ruins the surprise of a funny line. Johnny Carson seems to be doing nothing as an interviewer but in fact he is trusting the comic to fill the silence with something worth waiting for. That's a skill which many TV presenters are too anxious and too self-promoting to nurture.
@alexacolby50834 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Fallon is the worst of the worst. He constantly interrupts guests.
@bubbaguy44114 жыл бұрын
And that ..was just one reason why Letterman didn't succeed Carson. Letterman hates being the passenger and needs some sense of control. The best thing any talk show host can do (as we see) is sit back and let the guest flow.

Rodney had not been on Johnny's show for quite some time, And so he came up with a bunch of new material out of respect, and I have always been grateful for his love of comedy, and his friend

Me being an old fan of the "Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson," i remember this one in particular; the ending was brilliant. No one knew where Rodney was going with this before the commercial break.

Amazing intelligence. Miss Rodney. Unfortunately, in today's times, many younger folks will miss his point of humor and humility. Great guy.

Not only was Rodney Dangerfield a great comedian, he gave a lot of young comedians their start. He was a party animal too. I showed my grandkids the "Rappin Rodney" video and they couldn't stop replaying it.

"I can't get no respect." One of the greatest lines in stand-up comedy. It's right up there with Henny Youngman's line, "Take my wife... please." Rodey's brand of self-deprecating humor endeared him to everyone. When he appeared anywhere, you knew you would laugh.

I have to agree. Henny Youngman and Rodney Dangerfield, two of the best live shows you could possibly see. They new how to take command of an audience and work them into complete hysterics. The warm up comedians never stood a chance when one of these two were headlining.
@dwaneyocum17184 жыл бұрын
@@motogp001 Speaking of warm-ups... I never knew that programs like Carson's Tonight Show would have comedians come out before the shows started taping and "warm up" the audience for Carson. Carson mentioned it once when Buddy Hackett had been out and the program started with the audience in hysterics. Apparently Buddy been treating them to portions of his Vegas act which was not for prime time.

It’s hard to imagine that about the same amount of time has passed since Johnny first started the Tonight Show, to this episode with Rodney, and then to now. Have sure enjoyed seeing some of the appearances of Rodney over the span of the Tonight Show on KZbin, and of course starting back in the late 80’s when I was a teen, I could stay up late and see Rodney guest star on first run Tonight Show episodes. Rodney was always first class but always hilarious.

Rodney and Johnny. Two absolute masters of their respective crafts. Rodney with his one liners and masterful deliveries, Johnny being one of the best straight men in comedic history. Other times Johnny would just sit there and let his guests shine, not stealing their thunder. RIP guys. You brought a lot of hilarity to an otherwise insane world. Man, how we could use you guys now!
