Context: I am a 35 year old 7ft former basketball player. In high school (2005) we were assigned to do a report on an inspirational person. Everyone expected me to talk about Michael Jordan or magic Johnson but I chose Rodney Mullen. Obviously I grew up playing the THPS games and Rodney and his flat ground specials in THPS 2 were just so interesting and different to me. I had watched his "beat the game" video hundreds of times and even brought my Playstation in class to show it to the class. I remember everyone being floored by not only me picking Rodney but also knowing so much about skateboarding and talking about him so passionately. Fast forward to recent years and now knowing how humble and soft spoken he is after being one of if not the most influencial person in skating makes him such a more interesting person to me. He is literally one of kind. Doesn't want to be in the spot light doesn't want recognition or praise. Literally just wants to do what he loves. I love this dude. He is a national treasure in my opinion.

As long as he felt the documentary wasn't about all his accomplishments, but rather to help better the world, through his thoughts, messages and actions. That would be key. Rodney's story about skating in the rain was incredible. I could hear how badly he wanted to make it about the skating - and not how good he is at the tricks. His relationship with skating is the closest thing to an example of unity and peace I've ever witnessed in another human.
@TysonHook-22- Жыл бұрын
Hearing him describe skating in the rain and the way the water swirls off the board as the deck spins, I couldnt help but think that sounds like true "poetry in motion" a phrase often used to describe MJs playing style and its so fitting for the art of Rodney's skating too. and it had been awhile since i watch that 360 camera project that he did, but i remember there being elements of color swirls/blurs in it, that i didnt really like originally or understand why they choose to do it that way... but after hearing him talk about it, it gave me an entirely new love and appreciation for it and when he stated that the filmer's had decided to tell a new story through the project and that they showed him a sample and thats what really drew him into the project... I think that story/experience they attempted to convey is Rodney skating in the rain with the swirls/blur of color around him... or at least thats what i see upon watching it nowadays.

I don't know if you two ever see these comments but I need you to know that was one of the best interviews I've ever enjoyed anywhere. Rodney Mullen is a universal treasure and shaman of not just skateboarding but universal truths.

Rodney is LEGEND! Also, never heard anyone bring this up, but he also did a gig where he narrated the entire intro to the game Ghost Recon Breakpoint. I booted that up and was like... "Mullen?? wtf"

Not only did he narrate the intro, he also played a character in the game itself named Jace Skell.

This was amazing. Being a skater in the 90s (and a shitty skater at that lol) I have very fond memories of skating in my buddy's barn as well and also sitting around watching skate videos on VHS and getting so so pumped. Fast forward now where I'm in my mid 40s and that same feeling is still there when watching skate videos, but even more so watching your skate hero's casually chatting about the old days.

The world and world of skateboarding NEEDS rodney mullen!!! The street skating side of things has gotten so big and grown so much there's nobody that would be better at guest commentary or judging or even just bringing his energy to the contestants. Not only can his modesty and energy light up a room but he's so respected that he can bring another level out of people!!! There will never be a doubt in my mind that rodney and Tony are THE goats of skateboarding.

It’s absolutely insane. I’ve been skating since 1972/73. & I can say without a doubt, what an amazing subculture skateboarding is. And it made the main stream now, but it still has a subculture that can’t be denied in anyway. I feel so blessed to be entangled in this web we call the Skateboard community. Absolutely amazing.

Tony: "The parallels of our life and how they intersect was that he went and started doing Ollie grabs on flat Jason: "oh you did that's right" Rodney: "because of you" Jason "you did the ollie indy air because Tony did the ollie indy air" Tony "I went and learned finger flips cause of him, and he learned air walks cause of me" Jason "Nooooooooooooooooooo Mate, Oh shit!!" lmao I would have had the same reaction and never knew how these 2 interacted. I'm an old School BMX rider and skater. I love this interview.,

Everyone loves Rodney & Tony, 2 skateboard hall of famers and legends! His brain is just 1 in 8 billion, the tricks he was doing in his prime nobody else was doing and I still see skaters today discovering old tricks by rodney and they struggle to do them. He was ahead of his time and his old skate parts have aged like fine wine

So stoked you guys put this pod together and this week's was just next level. This could have run 12 hours and not felt like enough. Incredibly compelling, entertaining stuff. Is this where we put in our request for Rodney part 2? I can't be the only one wanting to hear what happened during that night session in Oxnard that Rodney referenced (along with pretty much anything else he would want to discuss). Keep up the fantastic work Tony and Jason, you dudes are the best.

I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Rodney. I grew up skating the S.P.O.T. Mike Frazier used to take me and my friends up there . I talked to Mullen a few times . Then saw him at journey back yard bbq tour . It was completely by accident. Talked to him for about 20 mins. He claims to have remembered me from Tampa . Such a gentle loving human .
