"It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell everytime I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of it’s meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging it’s tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart." (Thom Yorke)

"'Street Spirit' is our purest song, but I didn't write it.... It wrote itself. We were just its messengers... Its biological catylysts. It's core is a complete mystery to me... and (pause) you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless... All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve... 'Street Spirit' has no resolve... It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song... It's called detachment... Especially me.. I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it... I'd crack. I'd break down on stage.. that's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning... I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together... That's what's meant by 'all these things are one to swallow whole'.. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion... (pause) I'd crack.... Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realize what they're listening to.. They don't realize that 'Street Spirit' is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes... and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh...and it's real...and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that to long, I'd crack. I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song... That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell everytime I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of it's meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging it's tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much. (very long pause). I didn't write that song."

+Too Good To Be True ciao. this is what the artist thinks about his work, thanx for posting. but every work - if it's Art - becomes of world as soon as the artist releases it. and in the same time begins to have BILLIONs of interpretations (more or less 7), despite its creator's ideas. much much much over him.. Thom itself says it clearly: we were just its MESSENGERS... every artist knows just a part (deeply, but just a part) of his creations, I believe
@insaynt99249 жыл бұрын
+Too Good To Be True First, thanks for posting the artist's thoughts on the song. I like using music, or looking for the original thoughts behind it, as a looking glass into the person's mind and soul. However, I disagree with his interpretation. If it's true he's just a messenger, then it's possible he may not fully understand it either. My own thoughts on this song are for the most part, in line with his: It's about the weight of depression, how empty things can be, and feel, how it all adds up, and swallows whole. The end however, is what convinces me the song isn't entirely focused on this, along with the melancholic YET hopeful melody. These convince me that it's not about love merely being a distraction from depression, but a cure, a way to redefine life, and the things in it, to give them meaning. If you listen to the song with this in mind, it's easy to smile through it. Opening ourselves to hope and the aid of others, letting them try, and taking what they offer into account, can allow all of us, as people, to defeat those demons, together. It's a matter of realizing we're not so alone, after all. The dark tunnel isn't so endless as it seems.

This song is about the passage of time, and the realization that everything is effected by death. If you listen to the rhythm, it sounds like a ticking clock. Also the steady rhythm could represent a heartbeat, and symbolize how much time a person has left. The whole song seems hopeless at first, like death always happens and there is nothing we can do to change it, but it has the best redeeming quality at the end when Thom says “Immerse your soul in love”. Basically he’s saying that life is too short to live in hate, and that we need to make the most of each moment by loving each other.

You guys do know this song is pretty much about looking the devil in the eye and knowing you'll never win in life. Thome York denies even writing it & saves it for the end of concerts bc it is so draining for him. He describes his fans who cheer about it and such being blind to it's meaning, in which he compares his cheering fans to a dog being driven to be out down but smiling the way there. I love this song as well, I'm just saying. It's probably the most morbid song you'd ever hear.
@eirenii10 жыл бұрын
No, he said the song "wrote itself" that it gave a feeling intended to give. At least that is what I read about it. I don't know where you got that idea but that's a rather odd interpretation of it.

+Rosetta Phon Sad can be very beautiful. When you are crippled with a sadness that is too much for you to bear sometimes listening to a song like this encompasses that emotion so beautifully that it allows you to purge part of those feelings into the melody of the song. It literally turns your emotion that you have inside into a tangible melody that can be experienced with the senses of your body and in the listening, it is not so much a healing but a recognition of the feeling and for some like me it makes the burden a bit lighter as it is materialized.
