Would it be possible to put the black sticky sheet underneath the SSD? It would then act as an insulator between CPU and SDD. It kinda seems that you could easily make the necessary cuts to the sheet, so it would fit under the SSD.

The only issue here is that the ssd is going to be right over the APU which gets very hot. Even if the ssd doesnt touch it there will still be enough radiant heat from the APU that it will slowly cook your SSD. It may not kill it but the SSd's controller is going to throttle the SSD to stop it from cooking itself, speeds will be very fast at first but will slow down after a few minutes of heavy use as the SSD starts to overheat. Its still a nice idea but i feel you would just get the Micro SD issue but this time with a more expensive SSD

The screw that does not come out is made like that so it raises the plastic back from the front part so that you can stick a tool to open the ally. They do that in laptops too.

A gen3 nvme (they get less toasty) + a very thin aluminum sheet on top of it, like the Kingston Fury Renegade has. That's how i'd do it. Maybe that would be safe enough to stay on top of a 80°C APU all the time

Hey bro I've watched a lot of your videos for a while I've been looking in to getting one of these Asus Ally's. Of course I'll be doing some upgrading myself I have a question for you how has that m.2 been running with it that close to the heat sinks.

Given the Ally cooks micro SD cards for breakfast, it's hard not to be cheaper. However, losing out on library quick swap, backups, etc. The SD card issue is a deal breaker, for me.
@mastersplinter483

it only cooks microsd cards if you are a clown. IE: ppl trying to play hogwarts at uncapped framerate with the quality settings maxed out wondering why their SD cards are cooking while they run games at 95 Celcius. If you know how to use frame rate limiters, use an aggressive fan curve, and upscale 720p, my ally never runs over 60 C..... If you aren't thermal throttling your handheld trying to play cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing, you will be fine.

@@mastersplinter483 I live where the high temps can go over 46C. I don't have AC at home, either and even if I did, I'd want to play outside, on the go. I would not have to be pushing the Ally to it's limits, just using it during a 30-60 wait in the sunshine. My Asus laptop is fine, it isn't frying anything. However, I use it mostly inside and to be honest it doesn't mind the heat, but I don't really enjoy the extra heat, when I'm already sweltering. On that note, the heat did fry the fingerprint sensor on my phone, but my phone hasn't ever fried my SD card, even though that poor thing gets toasty (although it has safeguards. Unfortunately a software update lowered those to kick off at 46C, instead of 50C, the second summer, which made my phone a lot less functional.) is SD 888, so very toasty and many complaints (no collateral damage) , and no SD card damage. If a tiny (ok phones are not really tiny, but relatively ) phone can be designed right protected, the larger actively cooled Ally doesn't get a pass.

Awesome video as always. I was wondering since its been two months since this video was posted has there been any problems with this modification? Any heat issues? Any performance issues? Im needing to upgrade my ssd in my Rog Ally and im trying to decide which route to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you're fiending for a ton of space for whatever reason, I'd rather spend a few more dollars and get the 2230 than some high performance larger size drive that generates more heat while next to the heat pipe. My first reaction to this mod was "but that heat..." I'll stick with a 2tb 2230 personally.
@1972lesteryan
@1972lesteryan 8 ай бұрын
@_mnejing true but I can get a 4tb 2280 for the same price if not a little bit cheaper than a 2tb 2230. I'm using my rog ally for not only pc games but also emulation of a lot of ges I grew up with.

Other than saving some money on a smaller NVMe, are you seeing much in the way of speed increases?
@juanyunis
@juanyunis 11 ай бұрын
I did this mod, using a high performance nvme and I'm getting 7GB/s speeds with the new drive but tbh, you don't really notice that speed while gaming, probably 1 or 2 seconds max while loading a gaming. You could save money and get a 5GB/s nvme.

Why does everyone use the Asus cloud recovery? Is there a reason not to clone the drive? I understand if it's brand new - but after a few months it's probably customized to your liking not to mention all the updates that would have to be redone

Yeah what's the heat on the M.2 looking like, can you fit a heatsink? My ally X had enough space so I did a 2TB 990 pro with the heatsink on it. The larger you go in capacity the hotter it's going to get. The Gen3 drives stay cool. No need for a gen4 drive for just gaming and OS level stuff like chrome.

the problem i seen with installing games onto the micro sd card. is how the data is written to the sd card. depending on the game. there are times where more space of the micro sd card is used than is supposed to. for example bee simeulator will only take a little under 10GB on the SSD. but install the game on the micro SD card and it'll take upto 40+ GB. so the less games you have to install on the micro sd card the better depending on the game.
@adaopavoni
@adaopavoni 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the Micro SD card upgrade isn't viable. The ally will just burn your card. It's a BIG hardware design flaw. Mine failed about 30 minutes due to high heat, even with a 100% fan curve. The way to go, and this hurts to say, is the internal upgrade storage, which is a lot more expensive.

Damn it I wish I had never even seen this video cuz I rly fkn wanna do this!!! But my responsible self will absolutely not allow it bc I know how hot some of these cards get and with no thermal protection and it sitting right above the CPU like that just seems like a recipe for disaster. UNLESS (and this is where I’m at war with myself) you get the gen 3 adapter which would throttle the speeds enough to HOPEFULLY keep it from burning up. But even then that’s still taking a hell of a risk on somethin I paid over $700 for and ultimately I don’t think it’s even worth trying..
