Roger Moore isn’t my favorite Bond but he is 100% the best ambassador the character has ever had. Connery and Lazenby are bitter towards it, Dalton and Brosnan seem to enjoy their privacy(which is fine) and Craig is a drama queen about it and thinks its awful(and sometimes he likes it idk)
@BanCorporateOwnedHouses4 жыл бұрын
I'm 100% in agreement with you on this opinion. Moore seemed to have loved the character, the fans, the crew, and his fellow cast. He did interviews and promotions about his role up until his death. He isn't my favorite bond, but he's definitely my favorite actor to have the title of Bond. I think Brosnan is my personal favorite bond, but as you pointed out, he's very private about his life, and doesn't really go out of his way to interact with his fans. That is totally okay, and it was actually nice to see him do that GoldenEye watch-along stream last week. I wonder if Brosnan realizes the positive legacy he has for a lot of folks between his films and video games.

Yes Roger Moore didn't really have an entrapment syndrome with his Bond character compared to the other stars, perhaps because he was lucky to actually play the softer Bond model that started with "Diamonds are Forever" which imho didn't really fit Connery's portrayal of Bond.

I saw this when it was on tv way back in 1987. I was a big fan of Roger Moore and saw him in 2008 in London. He was promoting his book "My Word is my Bond". Emma Forbes interviewed him on stage and at some point was taking questions from the audience. I asked Sir Roger " What was it like working with the other big stars in The Wild Geese"? He replied modestly, " What do you mean? The other big stars, I was the big star! The whole theatre erupted in laughter. He definitely had a good sense of humour!

Moonraker will always be a personal favorite of mine. I just got done watching A View To A Kill last night for the first time, and I actually really enjoyed it. My only frustration wasn't Moore's old age, but the lack of acknowledgement about it. They could have told a great story about an aging Bond in that one.

My hot take on the codename theory? Connery is one Bond, retires due to boredom. Lazenby/Roger Moore are the same Bond (retires due to old age). Connery Bond comes back for one more mission after Lazenby/Moore Bond takes leave of absence. Dalton is one Bond (sacked after going rogue) Brosnan is another Bond (retires) There’s a few issues with continuity here but you can iron most of them out/explain them away. It’s the most logical approach for me. Craig isn’t proper canon.

I somehow find Roger Moore's doddery and long in the tooth characterization of James Bond more appealing and endearing than his younger performance. I dont know why. Perhaps because as a younger Bond one always compares him to Sean or other younger Bonds. But Moores charm really lasts and infact glows when he is older, since he isnt competing on the virility criterion now. He seems more at ease and charming, and almost detective-like in the older ones. As if he knows that it's his smooth talk and grey cells that will help him get through the situation and not a punch up. Perhaps why I really like A View To A Kill despite the obvious flaws and terrible make up and an obviously aging Moore. It will take years before someone else will have that sort of appeal to make Bond so alluring at 56.

He looked good for one more film but I think they did right casting Timothy Dalton when they did. To many of the next generation he was their Bond and he did bring a serious quality to the role much like Craig has done. When you see Roger in this and then come to Dalton it reminds me of going to the cinema and having to readjust my expectations for the films to not expect any charm humour or fun or eyebrow raising. Thankfully Pierce brought back a lot of the elements of Roger and Sean brought to the role.

I suppose this is the closest the series ever got to a 'Dr Who' style hand over. The contrast in styles between the two Bond's is noticeable and I do think was a factor in why Dalton struggled to win general audiences over, coming so soon after Roger's long and popular stint which mostly had a lighter tone. Certainly, by accident or design, Brosnan and Craig having a bit of a gap before there first entries helped them as audiences were open to a re-fresh after Bond had been away. While he was fine to help out with the promotion, Roger later admitted he didn't watch the finished film [or Licence to Kill] as he couldn't help being honest [as shown by his critiques on 'Die another Day' and 'Quantum of Solace'] and didn't want any potential negative comments to harm Dalton [similar to why he never watched 'Never say never again] so he felt it best to stay away.

The basket is still being used with wines which have a lot of sediments. In short the idea is that it allows us to move the bottle to a minimum, hence the sediments stay at the bottom corner of the bottle instead of being poured into the glass(es), an alternative is to decant it, but that’s done with cheaper wines since with expensive ones the bottle itself is a pretty big deal.

Roger does look younger here. Maybe the producers knew what they were talking about when they wanted to bring him back for another Bond film.

Moore is on the lower end of my Bond actor ranking. That's not because I harbor any vitriol towards his Bond. I just think that the ideal Bond should be charismatic and dangerous.

'The Man Who Haunted Himself' is a rare glimpse of Sir Roger garnishing his acting chops. A class act in anything. I think he was the final special guest they had on the original Muppet Show.

Incredible discovery. I didn't know anything about this special. The truth is that without looking wonderful, Roger, as always, makes it an incredible experience. I love Roger's accent, English is not my language, but I study it and have always tried, without success, to imitate his way of speaking to be credible with my English. LOL. Definitely a good video today Calvin

Wonderful stuff. Considering this was a time before the internet and the home video market was just coming into its own, these specials were probably a pleasant reminder for audiences of their times at the cinema with Bond and that there was more to come. BTW congrats on reaching over 25,000 subscribers!

Thanks, Michael! :D the 25,000 caught me off guard, I think my Myths of Bond videos work well for KZbin's algorithm as the views on those have been much higher than a lot of my other videos. Great to be welcoming a lot of new people to the channel thought! :D

Hi Calvin, Yes I remember when this was aired, I also remember James Bonds 21st birthday...They called Ronald Reagan the then President of the USA to comment. The Press secretary said are you mad hes not going to comment and low and behold he said bring the cameras in. "Bond is truely a symbol of the free world and some say hes just an actor in the movies but we all have to start somewhere". Brilliant! The Russians then responded with "Hes just an agent with a license to kill" always commenting as if Bond actually exists. Great video as always...really enjoyed it!!!

You'll appreciate this then. In 1983 when the "unofficial" Bond film, Never Say Never Again, was released it originally had a different ending. While Moore was under official Contract, Connery had actually wanted Moore in the film. When the film ends with Bond saying "Never again!" to take another assignment, his butler was supposed to walk by while giving him a glass and say "Now Mr. Bond, you know to never say never again." The Butler was to be played by Moore. Moore was not allowed to appear in it as per his 007 contract about appearing in unofficial Bond films.

I recorded this on VHS when it originally aired and watched a ton of it. It was where I discovered that ABC was butchering the films, as a few of the clips include bits not on the TV air. Specifically the aiming at your groin bit from TMWTGG.

I used to watch this special on tape when I was a kid and I loved it b/c it was like watching several Bond films at once. Although, in the version I watched there was no featurette on The Living Daylights but some footage from the movie and a narrator talking about the 25th anniversary of the series. There was also a final reel of clips introduced by Roger saying that the last thing Bond does is confront the villains and terminate them "with maximum prejudice." What followed were several main villain death scenes.

One of reasons Roger seems in character is that he was played these roles largely as a personality actor. He had tremendous charisma and charm and so playing James Bond or Simon Templar, he simply tapped into that. He didn’t try to act as he didn’t have to. He was already in character and that’s why it looks so effortless. If you see him in parts of LALD or TMWGG where Hamilton probably directed him to do something out of character, you can tell he gets a bit more wooden. Connery was largely the same. He almost always played the same character and certainly never changed his voice. Something that often gets overlooked. Moore was chosen for the role because of his charisma and screen presence and it worked very well in general.

I really miss him. I grew up watching his movies, and he was my favourite bond as he had a light hearted humour in him, but yet suave. But most importantly, what a wonderful and role model he was to all his fans and audience around the world. Never a man that was full of himself, or under any spot light of any controversial moments. A gem of a person.

I used to love clip shows back in the 80's. You have to remember we had to rely on TV showing Bond films, generally people didn't have them readily available and editing was much more difficult. Anyone remember Disney Time? My kids would be incredibly confused by showing a short clip of something. I prefer this kind of thing to the talking head shows you got later.
@davidjames5794 жыл бұрын
You're right, it's alien to think of a time before KZbin, but back then you'd get excited when occasionally a film clips show came on. I used to get really excited every week just watching the countdown on Barry Norman's film programme of the Top 10 at the US box office, as they were of films not released in the UK, so it was my first glimpse. Buying videos seemed such an expensive and rare occurrence then, that it was just sometimes renting, or waiting for a desired film to get screened on TV, so you could record it. As such glimpses on clip shows of Bond films I hadn't seen was a treat.

G'day Calvin, I happen to be a retired film and TV critic and this is the first of your videos I've seen. (KZbin 'logic' recommended your channel to me.) To kick off, I clearly remember the introduction of Bond films, and the name of "Dino de Horrendous', as he was known in the industry at the time. This is going to be a savage blow to you, Calvin, but it's a fact that the first several Bond films were judged, almost universally, by the industry and critics as worse than woeful. Yes, the box office numbers were there in droves, after a shaky start, and have been directly responsible for every subsequent Bond film. As a critic, I had admired the early work of Sean Connery so I wrote off his Bond as an aberration, a one-off 'mistake' to pay for a new house or swimming pool. Later, I came to believe that it was Sean who almost, single-handedly, assured a sequel and then more. When Mr Connery left the role the industry, myself included, hoped that would be the end of Bond, but - silly us - we had overlooked that as humans crave oxygen; producers crave cash in ever-increasing rooms’ full, and so the Bond 'spy operas' rolled on. Please don't get me wrong. It wasn't that I disliked Bond films, I just thought they were silly and did not do justice to Ian Fleming’s books which I read as a lad. My problem was that I had to avoid writing about Bond films because I knew the reader backlash would not go down well with my editors; and I was not prepared to pretend I was in awe of Bond films because, unlike critics now, I had a sliver of ethics and I would not fake a positive film review. Once that is done one's credibility goes down the drain. That was then, this is now and I can honestly say that I like Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond. He, along with much better writers, has brought a kind of serious dignity that tempers the improbably (as ever) situations that the character is tossed into. To finish off, yes, I'm old enough to recall wicker baskets for the service of fine red wines; they were widely used in the UK, some of its colonies, like Australia, and in upper crust restaurants in the US. I'm also old enough to be pedantic, as would any Bond, enough to chide you for having a 'droopy' bow tie where one can see the top button of your shirt, and, is that a pre-tied bow tie I see before me. It is, because not even Bond, nor I, or any other old codger I know can tie a real bow tie so evenly. Tisk, tisk, tisk. We can do better than this Mr Dyson...Calvin Dyson. Cheers, (with a Baron Ottard cognac), H… B.H. P.S. I understand that you must make a buck on KZbin but such a long ad for a little wallet is beyond the pale.
