Roger Linn tries out a new Akai MPC

Thanks again to everyone for all your kind compliments. It's truly overwhelming and much appreciated. If you don't mind, I’d like to kindly ask to show you two videos of my current “LinnStrument” musical instrument. There are close to 5000 LinnStrument players in the world, but surprisingly few hip hop artists among them. This surprises me because its 3D touch sensing adds so much to the musician’s creative palette, which I think would take hip hop in all new directions. Here’s a video I made, showing how LinnStrument’s 3D touch sensing can be used for beatmaking, capturing subtle touch gestures that ordinary 1D pads can’t do. As a hip hop artist 15-20 years ago, at the time, I drooled over your gear (still do), but it was just out of my price range. Looking back I wish I had just figured out how to borrow, or finance somehow because I think I truly would have had a different way to interface what I thought could be the new sound. Its hard to imagine the music making world without the innovations of Mr. Linn. He invented velocity-sensitive pads. He invented the concept of 16 pads. And he decided that any sound you can capture can be yours to use. He also decided that you should be able to play the drums with your hands live without needing a keyboard. I've also come to learn that with the 16 pads, you don't need a keyboard to play keyboard even. Mr. Linn designed instruments used by big name artists as well as the 9-5er who makes music for themselves after work. And in a badass little box. Now he's pushing the limits of expression with his MPE keyboards, continuing what he started with velocity.

I bought my first MPC back in 1991, the 60ii, the floppy drive only crapped out last year, superb machine. A few years after '91 I bought a secondhand ASQ-10, just as a backup, still works fine, all be it a little battle scarred from lending it out over the years. Bought a 2000xl SE1 when they came out, another superb machine. I bought an MPC-1 a couple of years ago, just to have a DAW style sequencer, and transient chopping capabilities for breakbeats, without having to have a laptop in my "therapy cell" set up, I really liked it, - so.., I bought the MPC live2 earlier this year, just to have the bigger pads, and extra audio and midi outputs. tbh, the only effects I currently use within the new units are the Air Parametric EQ, Custom Distortion and the Grime Distortion, I prefer using external outboard for the compression, reverbs, delays, etc, - not that the onboard ones aren't usable, I just have a tried and tested method for getting my sound, besides I personally feel that trying to do everything in one box leads to a less 3 dimensional sound, - but that might just be me. - I'm no professional, just another idiot with enough money to spend on toys that fed my autistic need for sonic manipulation, just someone who worked hard and played hard, - but my whole life experience would have been so very different, without your amazing, original ideas. god bless you Roger

I remember trying the MPC 60 in 88 at Sam Ash when I was 16-17, using the 60, 60II and 3000 on several records throughout the 90s. My first personal MPC was the 2000, but it contained your sequencer design. I own the One Plus and I have to say that even with all the new features, it still maintains that classic workflow. Even Reason having Block Mode helped me maintain the pattern based mindset for songwriting different sections. We really appreciate you and thank you for everything

Crazy cause I’m seeing this video because not long ago I thought of this year being the 30th anniversary of the MPC 3000. I also remembered me emailing Roger in 2014 being curious about the possibility of a 20th anniversary of the 3000 and he actually replied (which I was in awe) however his reply was direct, basically in short, he said to the degree of never again working with Akai. To see him even using and then reviewing a new MPC after his 3000 is great enough. I know we’d all love if a renewed relationship happen with Akai that’ll ignite a new Roger Linn designed MPC. Keeping my fingers crossed.🤞🏼 I’ve absolutely loved the MPC since my first time using a 3000 in 1996. Thank you Roger!!!

Roger Linn, an absolute legend. One of my first paid gigs fresh out of high school included programming the Linn 9000 for a music producer in Paris. I couldn't afford one but I was fascinated by that thing. That same year the MPC3000 came out and that changed my world. Thank you.

Hi Roger! You should measure the clock jitter of midi out with an oscilloscope. You’d be surprised how unstable these new mpcs are, clock’s all over the place. Had to sell my live mk2 as mostly anything being slaved to the clock was drifting out of sync, that’s just my two cents. I wanted to ask how was the original MPC 60’s clock so stable, was it quartz locked or something?
