Old Dave here. yes I caught a nice 46cm flathead on chicken that was marinated in soy sauce and garlic. An old European gent gave me some to use when I was fishing off a jetty and it worked. Although I havn't tried it again mainly because I have pretty good luck with my go to baits of squid strips, salted bluebait and pillies.

We typically fish off jetties and have caught mackerel, leatherjacket, silver trevally, flathead, mullet, bream and Australian salmon using chicken. It's my go-to bait! I tend to use smaller pieces than you demonstrated.

Roger I use chicken all the time and it’s great. I cut the chicken into strips and place in a container. I then add some splashes of fish sauce and a teaspoon of oyster sauce to lightly colour. I then add a little bit of salt. Bream love it and are attracted to the smell. I have caught many bream at the beach using this bait.

Had good luck with chicken on the beach. I usually cut it into bait size and give it a decent coating of any number of things and let it absorb over night. Have found if you go too hard on the garlic or chili they don't seem to work, fine in small amounts. My best results were using garam masala and a bit of soy sauce to help it soak in a bit better. Caught salmon, flathead, flounder and dart. Can salt it if you have leftovers and use it at a later date, gets tougher the more salt you use, like any salted bait, but still seems to work.

Roger, I too have heard of people using chicken in salt water to catch many varieties of fish yet am yet to see any really evidence of comparisons on the day with other baits. My brother was fishing in Corio Bay in Victoria where many anglers use chicken and some swearing by it yet he catches just as many and on most occasions more than others with traditional baits of that region. Great video as usual and thanks for sharing.

Another great video👍🏻👍🏻 I’ve used chicken successfully to catch bream, Aussie salmon, tailor etc much to my mates disgust 😂😂 If my bait is frozen, I’ll stop in at Aldi and grab 1 breast fillet and just cut into small strips - yabbie size, just enough on the hook. No garlic😂, just fresh raw chicken breast. I usually use very simple running ball sinker set up and fishing in the same places as you but closer to the rocks, sometimes off the beach. I’ve found I’m only successful when the chicken is fresh though. Not 100% success every time but I have found it works👍🏻

In Greece they catch loads of shiphead sea bream using chicken breast (casting from the beach-no tides in Greece), tightened with some soft thread. I also knew a guy who was using chicken's backside to catch grey mullets at the port, but I was never brave enough to ask him how he'd cut the bum off the rest of the chicken!

Roger being a softer bait chicken is helped a lot efficiency wise by using as small a sinker as possible. We use 00 balls in the estuary or no sinker and then chicken holds its own against pilchards for big bream. The surf means a bigger sinker is required but the lighter you can use the better. One can fish 6lb line on the beach no problem and a light sinker. Thin strips as a few people mentioned is important and will also save you money. Baits should be no bigger then your little finger in all dimensions. The softer bait also is at a disadvantage for leaving the rod unattended in a rod holder. Best to hold the rod and give it your full attention.
@marmar724235 ай бұрын

Thank you, Roger, for this video. But I think it's a waste to use chicken breast for fishing, I'd rather eat it myself. What I use for sea fishing here in the Netherlands. Fresh chicken liver that I get from a local butcher. Because liver is fatty and bloody, I catch really well with it. From flatfish such as flounder, sole and dab. But also sea bass, mackerel and cod, just a random selection of what I catch with fresh chicken livers. I would say give it a try and I would like to hear your experience on and about the chicken livers Kind regards, Will👍👍

Mainly bream but I’ve caught jewfish in the Hawkesbury river up to 32lb and quite a few smaller legal fish and I’ve used it in the minnamurra river and have caught quite a few salmon and tailor with the bream. One night a mate and I were getting a lot of small picks and we downsized our hooks and baits and landed 8 mullet! I’ve also caught quite a few flathead on chicken and some very big girls over the 80cm mark. Hi Rog, Glad you posted this. I've met a lot of ol' school fisherman who swear by chicken. I've tried and had no luck. Many have said to soak the chicken in tuna oil. I've been trying a new method which seems to be a big win. Paternoster , top hook a berkely nemesis pilchard plastic, bottom hook a chunk of pili, 9 times out of 10 they smash the plastic. Every minute or so i give it a slight pull.

So the trick to using chicken is to leave it out in the sun the day before to draw out the moisture, then freeze it and use it the following day. This will help the chicken to toughen up and almost have the same texture as squid. Fresh chicken is too soft and will fall off in slightly heavier conditions. Good luck
