There is nothing Low End on JV-1010. It is even more powerful than JV-1080 since it has Session expansion board built in, extra E bank of patches from 2080 and even the DAC is the same as in XP-30. The only thing is that might hint the low end experience is the small appearance and the need to edit it via computer. By the way JV-1010 responds to CCs for cutoff, resonance, attack, decay and even volume of individual parts within a patch. SoundDiver works for me on Windows10 which is the best JV editing software out there. Anyway amazing video! Thank you for the comparison.

The sound banks of the XV-5080 contains all the sounds of the previous JV models. The XV5080 has much better DACs than the 1080, that's why the sounds of it have more "weight" and much better low end. The 1080 was a serious piece of gear back then and still today. But the XV-5080 became the heavy artillery of Roland's digital synths. Keep in mind that what really matters, is the quality of the music someone makes, no matter what gear he is using! A friend of mine had the 1080, it is very good synth. I own two XV5080s and I am still using them until today. Great synth and so is the 1080. Thanks for the video!

Funny, I've owned a lot of gear, a lot of it really good gear over the years, some of which I miss, but the only bit of gear I've bought again is the Roland JV-1010. There's something appealing about the combination of classic Roland sounds in a half rack module, simple interface and the lowest cost way to get into the JV line. Now free software editors are available, the disadvantage of the small display is not such a big deal. The one expansion slot is enough for me (I've put the SR-JV80-02 Orchestra card in). Having said that the sound of the JV1010 seems slightly darker/duller than the JV1080/2080, I'm not sure why. I don't mind, as the sounds I'm using generally don't need that top end. I did find the lack of sparkle disapointing on the Bell Tree patch, however. Another contender I'm considering is the JV2020. I am considering trying the Roland cloud too, theres a LOT of JV sounds available in it, but of course its the in the box solution. The tempation of the cloud package is I believe you get everything, even all the cards for a reasonable price. Despite the name, you get VST plugins that live on your PC!

Maybe it's just that I"m old and my hearing is trashed, but I really don't hear much if any difference. Both synths have more or less the same architecture (multitymbral 4-part romplers with lots of filtering and modulation and various effects), so at this kind of price difference on the used market, why NOT get the 1010? Heck, I've always had a weakness for those lush Roland sounds, and I still have a little bit of music gear mad money left this year, so I think I might just have to do it. For practical purposes, they sound identical. I would argue that in most cases, there are _slight_ differences which can be attributed to the fact that the notes played were done by hand rather than by notes sent from a sequencer. Other times, it's because the 5080 has different waveforms and more effects to play with. In a blind AB test, where notes are sent in from a sequencer, and the listener doesn't know which one is being played, I'd wager that most of us couldn't tell which device was producing the sounds. Both sound amazing. The 1010 is not 'low end'. Edit: there are copies of SoundDiver out there you can use to program the 1010. I'm running SoundDiver on a Windows 11 computer and a Blokas MidiHub, it's fun to work with.

The reason why that last patch Shadows sounds different is because JV synths have tone delay setting called Play-Mate, I do not fully understand it yet, but it seems it somehow delays the sound by the length between previous notes you played or something like that :)) but this feature is not in XV range so that one particular Sine Wave tone is played without any delay. That gives it that extra bite at the beginning. Nothing major really, I believe Shadows is the only patch using Play-Mate tone delay and I can't imagine any real use for it :)

I've commented here before but I just thought of two new differences: 1) I really like the patch Translucence (JV bank E 103 / XV bank D 103) the 2.2Vibave and 2.2Bellwave samples are different. On JV you can hear kind of majorish overtones whereas on the XV those overtones are somewhat minorish. That makes the Translucence on XVs little less optimistic :)) --- 2) On the JVs some patches do not use all 4 tones (partials) but when you turn these tones on, they are actually preprogrammed with some cool additional sounds and textures to enrich the patch. Take Soundtraque (bank E/D 104) as an example. On the XVs, turning on the unused tones does nothing since there are no waveforms selected but I found out that all other parameters are there. I guess it was because XV has much more wave samples and they are numbered differently.

16-bit vs. 24 bits: Older modules, such as the JV series, use 16 bits, which was common at the time. Newer models, such as the Integra-7 and the XV series, use 24 bits, allowing for better sound quality with more detail and a wider dynamic range. 24-bit: 24-bit depth offers greater resolution and is capable of capturing and reproducing a wider range of dynamics, which is especially important for complex, expressive sounds.

No difference that I can hear in these sounds. I have a JV1010 which I bought a long time ago after reading a few excellent reviews. I made a lot of tracks with it and it still works today.

Didn’t really hear much of a difference!

Expanding Sound I agree on that. The XV had a street price of 2.495€ and the JV 499€. But ok...the XV offers so much more. Sound wise the JV is huge.

The MIDI Maniac I’ve owned both the 1010 and the fantom fa-76, which had the 5080 engine if I’m not mistaken, this video is making me want to pick up an 1010 again :). I still have my fantom s board, the fa was just wayyyy too big. But the 5080 really is a beautiful sound

Expanding Sound the FA- series is also beautiful. When my QS7 dies it will be replaced by a FA for sure. And I can imagine that picking up a 1010 again is tempting. It is a great unit and I love the session-board.

Can’t really hear the difference. Can’t really say which sounds better.

Johnny de Kock the only difference is the last sound which really sounds different but it’s amazing how equal they are. Ok, the possibilities of the xv are no comparison for the jv, but if you only want those typical sounds then you’re good to go with the jv.

The JV sounds like the MP3 of the xv. Less dynamics and harsher/brassier. Like it has less mids, more highs and a thinner bass. Is the velocity sensitivity set lower or even adjustable on the JV? When you play the JV, the notes are closer in volume throughout, whereas the xv, it seems far more dynamic and depending on your playing to be more even. Makes the JV sound louder on your comparison. They carried on the xv synth engine right through the first gen of fantoms. Was quality.

Who can't hear the clear difference between 5080 and 1010 has to check their ears or find different hobby/ job. 5080 goes much deeper and has better, fuller sound.

JV 1010 sounds rather "tin-like" in comparison with the pristine CD-like sound of the 44,1 Khz XV-5080 - as if the JV-1010 were put through a low-pass filter, all the bass below 100 Hz being cut off. Means: at nearly the same prices of just a couple hundred bucks as of 2020 on the second-hand market, XV-5080 is a clear winner, considering more studio master ready better engine, better and more fx per voice, more place for the expansion boards the sample-reading capabilities

Not when all of your music is consumed through KZbin or Spotify. They sounds identical.
@gameon20002 жыл бұрын
@@2112jonr yes, youtube has some compression, but even then one can hear the difference in any halfway decent high resolution studio headphones - e.g. I can hear it in my "Bluedio Turbine T4" or better + only like 1% humans can hear the difference, being professionally trained in music production i.e. sound engineers etc. + music production is not for youtube.

Only based on the way how the units were launched by Roland. It’s an incredible unit.

JV-1010 is good but I am so dissapointed with it's user interface. Roland made it too bad for this module because the indicator is only three digit numbers. If Roland had made it as good as Roland Sound Canvas series like SC-55mkII or SC-88mkII with wide LCD screen, that will be great and we can see the patch names instead of numbers. I think Roland were running on the deadline to release this module so they did not concentrate the UI design seriously, just because it was designed to be the player, no built-in editing like it's brothers like JV-880/1080/2080.

An LED display keeps the price down.

They sound very similar. However, the 5080 has a digital output which might make some difference in sound quality. I also own both.

Indeed they sound similar. Of course the 5080 is a serious powerhouse with lots of possibilities but it is amazing how the 1010 sounds.
