Truth about location shooting ..so sick of all the recent modern star wars productions that shoot on the same size 'volume' where even in 'outdoor' environs look all exactly the same.. P.s. Solo is worth watching imo, it didn't perform in theaters more cause people were pissed about Last Jedi, but it's way more fun than any of the sequel trilogy, that's for sure..

I love when they use the new movies and shows to add an extra dimension to the original stories... like it always kind of struck me as odd in a New Hope that the Stormtroopers firebombed the Skywalker farm entirely... they didn't do it anywhere else, so why kill some random moisture farmers? Especially so violently? Originally we just chalk it up as another evil act by the Empire.... but the Obi Wan show gives us another answer. Owen and Beru know exactly who Luke is. They spent their entire life waiting for the Empire/Vader to search for Luke and they were always ready to come out blasting when the Empire came for him. We saw it when the Sith appeared to take Luke, and my guess is, they did the same in a New Hope when they saw Stormtroopers on the horizon.

The thing I love about the name "Rogue One" as a retcon, is that after Luke and Wedge etc blow up the Death Star the remains of their squadron are renamed to "Rogue Squadron", you see in Empire Strikes Back that their callsigns are "Rogue Two" and "Rogue Leader". So retroactively, it's like the squad that took down the Death Star were named in honour of the squad that died to get them the plans that made it possible.
@mj_SR2219 сағат бұрын
You're exactly right! So in pre-Disney cannon, Rogue Squadron is founded by Luke as the sort of essential "rebel" squadron after Red Squadron is decimated on the attack on the first Death Star -- just as Blue Squadron is decimated at Scarif and so never seen again. This is a real life practice as decimated military units are often 'retired' in honor of those lost. Rogue Squadron becomes the premiere Rebel unit, led by Luke, as seen in Empire Strikes Back. Rogue is just another way of saying 'rebel' that Luke comes up with in this way. In the Disney era, they have Luke establish Rogue Squadron exactly as you said and it's seen in the new era comics: Luke founds the squadron and specifically names it after the crew we see here in Rogue One, going on to be seen in Empire as you said. It's a very clever way of weaving the new movie into the classic, original trilogy movies. Fun fact: Wedge leads Red Squadron in the attack on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. The rebel fleet combines several squadrons into wings or groups to help integrate so many moving parts. (Rogue Squadron exists for example, but pilots are split up among different groups. And rather than have a bunch of squadrons with random callsigns, they create overall task oriented groups designated by colors. Tycho Celchu, a Rogue, is put into an A-wing with Green Group which is tasked with covering capital ships and supporting Red Group as the primary strike force.) Wedge specifically chooses Red to be the callsign for his element as an honorific and call back to his original Red Squadron. Bonus Fact: Blue Squadron shows up in Rogue One as an honorific to the original script. If you read the original script and novelization, even radio drama, for Star Wars, it's Blue Squadron that attacks the Death Star in X-wings, not Red. But that era of filming used blue screens and they found the blue markings on the X-wing models didn't show well. So at the last second they changed it to red. Using Blue Squadron in Rogue One is a callback to this original script.

@@Ryan_Christopher I don't think it's fair to say that one clause in the opening of Episode IV was the basis for Rogue One. Episode IV revolves almost entirely around these plans that have been stolen. The Empire knows they're missing and are in hot pursuit when the film opens. Even without the opening crawl, the story of how this chase started, and where these plans came from, is the logical preceding chapter of the story.

This film built up the lore and the original trilogy. It didn't try to destroy characters to make the new characters look better. "Many Bothans died to bring us this information..." was actually just cover for what happened. But lots of people died to bring the information. So many died to get the information, that when the attack on the Death Star came from Yavin 4, there wasn't a fleet left at the base. It doesn't subtract from the heroism of the Yavin 4 pilots that they were part of a larger rebellion. It adds to the history of sacrifice in face of overwhelming power that was required to challenge the Galactic Empire.
@Daniel-Strain8 ай бұрын
Many Bothans died WAY after this and episode 4. They had nothing to do with this. That was a line from Return of the Jedi about the SECOND death star. And the Bothans did not deliver any plans. They brought information to the Rebels that a second death star was being built, where it was (Endor), and that the Emperor was going to be there. - all information the Emperor purposely let them have. Nothing in Rogue One has anything to do with Bothans or that line.

I love that they brought back small characters like “Gold Leader”, “Red Leader” and of course “RED FIVE” was standing by, knowing who will take over that call sign later! One thing that sticks in my mind is Mon Mothma. There must be another battle somewhere in the mix because in RotJ, she says, “Many Bothans died to bring us this information.” It makes me wonder if they were going to do another film to cover that line from her. I was astounded how they brought David Niven back to life! How did this affect his Estate?! In Dallas, we have a store called Order 66 that is the world’s largest Star Wars collectibles store. They did a sneak preview of this film. I’m glad I got to go. They had gift bags, trivia contests (I won!) and actors from the Star Wars universe. Y’all would have loved it, too!

The big things for me in this movie are that they made the Empire absolutely terrifying and then threw Vader on top. Just the sheer oppressiveness of the Empire and the utter desperation you feel from the Rebellion. And that last battle. Especially the space side . . . I felt like a kid again for a minute.

Rogue One is more Star Wars than any of the Disney Sequel movies will ever be
@DocuzanQuitomos8 ай бұрын
Oddly enough, Rogue One *is a Disney film*. There are several stories (and maybe a ton of unpublished reasons) why this film (and other Diseny era productions) did/do better than the "bigger" (so to speak) films Disney oversaw/tried to influence. One of those stories, if I recall correctly, involved the director/production crew conditioned their participation if they were given complete creative freedom over the project (while in the Sequel Trilogy Disney exerted almost complete creative control over every single step of the process).
@mattrismatt8 ай бұрын
I don't know. As with any story, interpretation is key. With a certain point of view, you might just realize how 'Star Wars' the sequel trilogy really is. Eventually, I think the fans will come around.

The things that gets me the most about this movie is that Carrie Fisher died a just little time after it was released. I've seen it on theater and I loved the endind, I remember people on the theater actually crying ater that scene, and when Carrie's death was announced, the first thing that came to my mind was the last scene of the movie. Princess Leia talking about hope.

Also I'd love to see you guys react to Fallout. I've watched it twice, and I'm still often thinking about it.

What a film. Yes it’s a bridge between the prequels & the OG trilogy but it hit me in another way. After I had reflected on this, I began to develop parallels to the men of WWII; on the beaches of Normandy (those unnamed in BoB perhaps), the sands of Iwo Jima, the USS Indianapolis, the bomber crews of the Mighty 8th….the thousands of others who died without us knowing their stories. This all without fanfare, during the performance of their duties during what may have been an obscure mission, not unlike the Rogue team depicted here. --An excellent script, fantastic directing holding to the simplicity of “A New Hope”, with a terrific cast & score. Great commentary y’all, very much enjoyed it.

I wish people could go back and experience what it was like in ‘77, it’s really hard to describe just how huge Star Wars was then. It was everywhere. My favorite theater experience was Empire, we were so primed for it, the excitement was so thick in the air you could feel it. And of course we all walked out with “WHAAAAATTT?!?!?!?” His what? NOOOOOOOOOOO. Then realized we had to wait 3 years to find out what was next. Luckily we had India Jones, and many others, to pass the time with in between them. And, of course, many toys to play with. ;-) When Episode I came out in ‘99 I was 30, my eldest was 4 or so, I took him to see it but he was a little too young to grasp it. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, you just have to watch it as a 7 year old again.

I dont ever remember going to any other movie and watching people pour out of a packed theater and turn right and get in line too see it again. It was all great and hope you guys get to experience a film like that in your life time.

Saw Gerrera figures prominently in both the Clone Wars and in the Rebels series, as a rebellion leader against the CIS on Onderon, and later aiding the nascent Rebel Alliance against the Empire. Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin always personified that cold, yet politely sinister aspect of Imperial officers. Calculating and ruthless.
