One little extra detail with Vader's scene at the end is how he chokes one of the rebel soldiers. Normally when Vader chokes someone, he pinches his thumb and index together like he's pinching their windpipe closed. You can see this very clearly when he turns around while choking Krennic. When he's in the hallway slaughtering the rebels, he full on slams his fist shut, probably obliterating that rebel's throat. So brutal

What really hits about this movie is the pure sacrifice of all the characters, even the secondary, nameless ones. You really feel the desperation of all the characters in the last battle. Blue Squadron flies down to Scariff knowing the shields are closing, knowing that there's no coming back. They're not getting off that planet. It's literally a suicide mission they're going on. The rebels, when finding out that Rogue One has gone to Scariff, head off on their own without approval, again, knowing that it's an all or nothing attack for this one bit of information. Every character that dies on Scariff, literally dies not knowing if the plans got out, not knowing that the Death Star will be defeated in the subsequent battle, not knowing if they died for nothing. It's awesome stuff.

Tony Gilroy famously took control over the movie from Gareth Edwards, even getting full control to recut the movie. The reason Edwards gets to save face and still be credited as the director has to do with the Directors Guild rules. Also a note of Gary Whitta's work; he wrote the original script that the movie is mostly based on, that's why he get's a story credit rather than a screenplay credit.

Great review as always! Waiting for it to drop all day. One critique of yours that I don’t really get though with the music. The main theme being cheerful and hopeful sounding is because this movie sparks “the new hope.” Tragic and dark story of these characters saves the rebellion. So really it’s a story of sparking hope. So I feel the music is really fitting. Also, I will always remember the feeling I had seeing the Vader scene for the first time in theaters. Jaw dropped, edge of my seat, and shaking my wife’s hand with pure joy. Such an awesome moment.

I'm really skeptical that we say "we knew they were ALL going to die." which isn't necessarily the case. The line in A New Hope was "A lot of good people died to get this", which doesn't necessarily mean they all died. I wish that maybe one or two of these characters were still alive so we could delve into their story more. It's super unfortunate, thank goodness for the cassian show though!

I would've put this below episode 6. The characters are not great except for K2SO and none them are developed throughout the movie. When I first saw Rogue One in theaters, I avoided almost all media about it before I went in. I also wasn’t the biggest Star Wars fan, and having not seen A New Hope in over a decade (plus the prequels were so forgettable for me), I’ve forgotten a bunch of people in the film. So I forgot about Leia’s foster father, and some of the other Rebel members. It wasn’t until Tarkin appears that I noticed it was before Episode IV. And I did not know until the very end where Vader slaughters those men, and Leia receives the plans that this takes place right before the film. Idk how I managed to go in so unknowingly, but I loved it when it all hit. Upon re-viewing after knowing, it’s still an amazing film.

I had high hopes and expectations for Rogue One. Overall I enjoyed the movie. The visual effects were great. I liked most of the characters. I would say the biggest hurdle it faced was a potential for being anti-climactic since we already knew the overall outcome of the story being told. I do like that they found a legitimate way to explain the massive design flaw in the original Death Star. That fact always required a little suspension of disbelief, but Rogue One did a good job of fixing that issue from the original trilogy.
@ZacharyFinn5 жыл бұрын
BrotherhoodOfSteel85 I get what you’re saying, but that is just always going to be an inherent issue with any kind of prequel. You’re always going to know how the story broadly ends. It’s probably best going into the movie with that fact already in mind.

Barrett comparing this to Reach and complaining that the movie didn't spend enough time with the characters like that game does is borderline idiotic. Reach is a VIDEO GAME, so of course you're 1)gonna spend way more time with the characteres and 2)you actually interact with them. Rouge One cannot achieve that as a movie becasue as a movie its only 2 hours long and you're watching passively, but that doesnt mean it doesnt work. I hate when people compare two mediums all willy nilly. It's like complaining that a book doesnt work for you becasue when you read it it doesnt make you want to get up and dance the same way a song does when you listen to it.

Rogue One is in my top 3 favorite Star Wars movies. Absolutely brilliant. I get emotional each time I watch it. I love the score. Sure, the first two acts are bit slow, but third act makes up for it. Each character has just enough development to make me care about them. Vader scene is soo badass. Should have had an opening crawl, but oh well. CGI Tarkin is slightly jarring, still cool; CGI Leia looks worse. Overall great movie. 8.5/10

The way the final scene should have been shot was with the camera zoomed in on the device with the plans, the crew member handing it off, then once Leia is holding the plans, it slowly pans up to show only her mouth and we see her say "Hope"

I like RO overall. It's beautifully shot, well acted with some interesting characters, the central conceit is great (though shouldn't be considered an indictment of ANH -- and Gary has said as much), and it has an exciting third act*. That said, Jyn's turn from cynical pragmatist to inspiring optimist felt abrupt and artificial, the team dynamic wasn't fleshed out enough for the finale to feel impactful (aside from a surface level sympathy), and the inclusion of Vader was indulgent and tonally confusing (in a vacuum, it's fucking awesome). Idk, overall it's good. My personal ranking (usually): 4, 5, 7, 6, RO, 8, Solo, 3, 1, 2

In defense of the Tarkin and Leia CGI stuff..... Lucasfilm has historically been the studio to push the envelope forward in terms of movie making, technology and special effects. Even back with the prequels as shitty as those movies are they tried new and inventive stuff, and if it didn't work out in the movie.. they atleast paved the way for future uses by other studios. I personally think Tarkin looks damn good in Rogue one, and at the very least, they were trying something that really hasn't been done on that scale. Innovation and risk taking sometimes supercedes just taking the easy way out.
